Good to know. Still not enough to download a video, but it does help with larger podcasts or other audio files.

It makes sense to offer it, but my concern is that if you paid Disney (IT, cough cough) to deliver it, and they didn't-I'd be very put out...
I would pay for internet, but not every day. Back in the days when we traveled on cash reservations, we would usually time the internet to cover two days of checking and then skip a day, so we could be online 2 calendar days out of 3 but pay for 1 calendar day of three.

However, with WiFi and internet speeds what they are now, I would expect Disney to offer top notch service for $9.95 a day, and I mean top-notch. Everything should work like at home - multiple people in your room can be logged on at the same time, and you can bring your Roku, AppleTv or whatever and it would work.

As it is, all I'm asking for is reasonable connection speeds that allow me to handle my basic surfing (email, newspaper, photo uploads) and download the occasion video from iTunes or stream from Netflix/Hulu. I would even be OK with it taking an hour or so to download a video (I can do it in about 5-10 minutes with FIOS at home) because it's free. I don't expect Disney to give me a port-a-potty for a bathroom, and I don't expect them to give me a carrier pigeon with flash drive attached to leg for internet.

Last week at BCV, it wasn't just slow - we couldn't even connect at all one morning - and other days it kicked us off multiple times. Hard to agree to pay for better service when you can't get ANY!

That reminds me of a problem I had SSR last January. We wanted to book a Fork & Screen showing of a movie at AMC at Downtown Disney. I tried 3 times to do it on my iPad over Disney's WiFi. The sessions kept crashing. I finally turned off WiFi and did it over cellular. It worked.

That's a setting where I could have easily said, "Screw the movie, let's go to the pool" and Disney would have lost out on a sale.

They also push us to use the online booking for ADRs. Guess what, it works better when you have a reliable and speedy internet connection. I prefer to use WiFi in the room so I'm not hitting my cellular data caps.

If they are pushing the NextGen stuff, they will have to understand that NextGen includes reliable internet at a decent speed.

Do the DVC resorts still have a wired connection? My DH is self-employed so he needs to check email when we're on vacation. We've always used the wired connection (we keep a wireless router in our owner's locker so we would plug the router into the wall and then could use our laptop or other devices wireless). The wired connection was sometimes slow, but DH was always able to connect and get his email. If we have to rely on Disney's WiFi now and it's not reliable that could be a problem.

Apparently the physical wired connections were turned off. I know I tried to plug in while at BCV last week and the line was not working.

I just got a survey from our Aulani stay and there were several questions about the wi-fi (I hate that term, by the way). I had no problems with it while there.

Maybe some feedback will prompt them to upgrade, where needed.

I predicted this would happen (bandwidth would suck), back when the DVC WiFi first came out, and people were saying how good the speeds were.

It really sucks that they seem to be disabling the hardwired ports as well.

Sigh.

I'm one of those people who *needs* (as in: job) access, even while on vacation. I guess I'll be looking into a MiFi solution.

Sigh again.

Default Disney's internet

Since I started this I figured I could give a summary. Disney's internet sucks! It appears they are to cheap to get enough bandwith for all of us mouses.

I work as a computer administer pretty much 7/24 and really appreciate the advice given here.
The next time I want a vacation away from computers and the internet I will go to DisneyWorld!!

after all it's suppose to be a vacation ....isn't it?

That's a bummer. I'd rather have a wired connection that works than a wireless connection that doesn't work. Of course Disney should be able to give us wireless that works, but if they aren't doing that, than they should at least leave us the wired option.

I have a feeling we may have to look into the MiFi solution as well...
