Default First Cruise - Successes and Failures

After spending Spring Break 2011 4 hours NORTH of my home in Door County Wisconsin in freezing conditions, I vowed never again. While my husband drove home in an ice storm, I surfed for vacation ideas...How far away could I get?

Answer: A Disney Cruise to the Bahamas.

It took some school calendar investigation, alot of DCL website surfing and bank roll evaluating, but the drive home took almost 8 hours so what else did I have to do?

I discovered that there was a cruise available for 5 days right during our Spring Break. SOLD!

I should explain that none of us had ever been on a cruise before, but we were willing to try anything that involved sunshine.

I booked through Smallworld vacations. I waited a couple of weeks to my 11 month window and secured a three day stay at OKW. Nothing to do now, but wait to book flights. Since we were out of frequent flyer miles, I was determined to try Southwest. Once I figured out when I could book that, I did. Only one problem. If we wanted to fly home on Sunday, the day the ship docked, it was going to cost us about $1100 more to fly home Sunday instead of Monday. We have annual passes this year...hmmm...looks like the kids are going to miss Monday at school.

With the flights booked I immediately booked an additional end of trip night at Jambo house. On a whim, I wait-listed Kidani for the front end of our trip. It came through right away. Now I'm excited. We've never stayed in Kidani.

As a last item, since we were flying in late on Friday night, I booked Holiday Inn Express near the airport for our arrival night. Didn't want to burn any more points. We got a great rate so....nothing to do but wait and make ADR's

Fast forward to February. I have just started a new job. As part of my introductions, my new boss wants me to fly out to California to meet the other part of the team...Mon - Fri 3/19 - 3/23...with us scheduled to leave 3/23 for Florida. Too bad I was unaware of this trip...Spring Break in California would have been really nice too.

Anyway, I talk the boss into Mon-Thurs. I make the California journey. It was great, flew home late Thursday night to a very messy rainy O'Hare. Make it home by 10:00 pm. Good thing I have tomorrow off to pack.

First success: I had the forethought to pack one of our carry-ons with just the stuff we needed for the first night. jammies, nighttime stuff, clothes for the next day. It was great to just use that bag in the Holiday Inn. We also brought a blow-up mattress for that.

All 5 of us fit easily into the suite-like room. The shuttle picked us up at the airport and took us back the next morning and they had a free breakfast.

First Failure: I WAY over packed for the rest of our trip. I must have thought I was packing for some additional family.

By 8:30am 3/24 we were back at the airport and in line for ME.

We seemed to have a very long wait for ME. It's the first time I've had to wait longer than 15 minutes though so no big deal.

By 9:30am we are at Kidani. I didn't do online check-in this time and I don't think I ever will again. I don't see that it saves any time. I walked right up. I said I knew it was early and we just wanted to drop off our bags and head to a park. The nice CM looked us up. I politely asked if we could be on a top floor. I'm an insomniac and having people above me drives me crazy. It's like we're always below the "heavyfoot" family. She said she had a room on the top floor, a bit far from the lobby, but it was ready Now! We'll take it. We had the luggage dumped off and we were headed for MK by 10:00.

This is our first trip, just the 5 of us, since buying into DVC. We've been bringing family and friends for the last couple years. It's fun, but what a difference to just have us there. We had so much fun that day. I let each of the kids pick the ride they HAD to go on. DD14 twin A picked Space Mountain. The wait was long so we got FP's and headed over to the Laugh Floor DD10's pick. Every time I go to Laugh Floor, I still laugh like it's the first time. I love watching the people they pick in the audience. DD10's joke got picked

"What's hairy and sneezes?"
"A coconut with hayfever"

She was in heaven. Her day had been made. They announced her joke and her name.

We went to the new Fantasyland just to look around and it was time for SM. (Wouldn't want to miss that FP window.) Rode SM. Two kids down.

We were bummed that BTMR was closed, but we got on HM and Splash. Headed over for DD14 twin B's pick Pirates! It was closed. Bummer. Her second choice was Peter Pan so we went back and got FP's for that and then just knocked around. By the time we rode Peter Pan, it was time to head over to O'hana's. We hopped on the boat.

We got there in time for the torch lighting. Funny, I don't recall anyone on MOs mentioning the very attractive young polynesian man doing the torch lighting. I'll be attaching photos soon. I might have to head over for this event more often. Put that on Mom's list.

Another Success: We had never tried O'hana, but thanks to MOs, I knew we should go hungry. We hadn't eaten since breakfast. We were starved. Thank goodness! I've never seen so much food dumped on a plate at one time. The pot stickers were yummy. My daughters loved all of the food. DD10 had sauce all over her face and used her hot towel as well as mine to clean up.
It was really good and I would definitely eat here again.

After dinner, we looked in the gift shop, wandered the resort, the beach. We talked about going back to MK, but opted to just ride the monorail back and get on the AK bus. Ahhhh...just the 5 of us to make decisions...nice.

Sorry I'm in a chatty mood. I haven't even gotten to the cruise.

I forgot one MK first:

The Jungle Cruise. LOL! We were walking by it when DD10 asked so what is this ride anyway? We had never taken her on it! So, we did what good (read stupid) parents do, we got in line.

She thought it was OK. I asked if she had a new favorite ride. She said "Uh, I don't think so."

3/25 Sunday - Hollywood Studios. We made rope drop. The kids and I went right over to Rock n Roller Coaster. DH trotted off for TSM FP's. The girls and I made it in the second group on Rock n Roller Coaster. By the time we got off, DH texted us that he was reaching the line and the wait was 10 minutes, so of course we joined him and rode it again. I'm thinking to myself, "This is Spring Break. Where IS everybody?" After our second ride, we wandered into the spot where the artist teaches you to draw the characters. Still. no wait. We rode The Great Movie ride and caught Voyage of the Little Mermaid. It's now almost 12. We grab some sandwiches at ABC Commissary and watch as the rest of humanity enters the park. Where were all these people? Now it's crowded! We ride TSM and then get more FP's for later. 8:15 return time should be perfect after dinner at Mama Melrose's.

We rode Star Tours and came out and got right back in line. 15 minute wait, yet you can barely move in the park? I just couldn't understand it. What were these people doing? Wandering around not riding anything? Star Tours was lots of fun! We saw an episode that we had never seen before, it was the underwater one? I really liked that one.

We filled the rest of the day with a little shopping and another cartoon drawing, then went to check in at Mama Melrose's. We had never tried this restaurant either, but that was my goal, to try new places. MM was an adventure in and of itself as I explained in my "Of course I have an ADR" thread:

http://www.mouseowners.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=64371

BUT after waiting to be seated, waiting to order, waiting for food and despite being really hungry, the food was just OK.

We had Chicken Campanelle, Penne alla Vodka, Oven-baked Chicken alla Parmigiana, and Hand-rolled Potato Gnocchi...none of it was outstanding. The restaurant was OK. Service was good. I wouldn't knock myself out to go back here.

After dinner, we rolled ourselves to TSM where I promptly whipped everyone's tales with my mad pie-throwing skills. I think I pulled something in the process.

We had a quick Pow wow. Dad and the older two went on TOT and then headed over to MK for extra magic hours. DD10 and I headed back to Kidani for a swim.

We're starting to get really excited about this cruise! One more day and then we're setting sail!!
