Default Heading to Hawaii (updated: avoid Aulani)

We (me, DW, DS16, DS12 and DD13) are (hopefully) flying to Hawaii this Saturday, Oct 31 for 11 nights. We are staying 7 nights at the Marriott Ko'Olina and then 4 nights at Aulani.

I say "hopefully" because it will depend on our test results. I just got back from SFO airport where we got tested through United's program. It was easy peasy. They send you an e-mail one week prior to your flight with a link for appointments. There was no wait and the test was a shallow nasal swab and self-administered. The tests were $105/each and results are guaranteed within 72 hours and supposedly provided within 48 hours. I'm hoping we get them by Friday to upload to my Hawaii safe-travels website profile. United also offers rapid result tests for $250/each on the day of your flight by appointment only.

My county also offers free testing but appointments are harder to come by and it was unclear if they test kids or if the tests are even accepted by Hawaii as they are only accepting certain providers at the moment.

I have heard stories of people not getting their results before landing and needed to quarantine, which means no leaving your hotel room for anything except a medical emergency. That would suck.

Hopefully all goes well. DW is pretty nervous about travelling with national cases spiking. However cases in San Mateo and San Francisco counties as well as Oahu are relatively low and stable. Keeping fingers crossed for quick, negative results and a good flight.

I expect cases will start rising again around here and we'll be hunkering down again for another six months so I really need this vacation.

Fingers crossed! Salute us all with a proper Mai Tai if you make it.

We head out there about a month from now and we're doing the Kaiser tests since we're members.

Cheers.

My paralegal flew out to Oahu today. She got her test for free at Kaiser and said she got her results in 24 hours.

I can't calculate your 72 hours pre-flight testing, but hope you are within the 72 hour window that is required by Oahu.

yes, we are. The rules are 72 hours from departure. So hopefully we'll at least have the results by the time we land if takes the full 72 hours.

Make sure that the place you get tested is on the approved list for Hawaii. Otherwise, they will not let you in the State. There was a Utah family that had their negative test result using the barcode system but the testing place wasn't on the approved list and they had to fly back home that day.
