Default Pickpocketing at WDW

Until recently we never heard of theft at wdw. I think a long ago guide book cautioned about it in the 80ís. I noticed on Facebook more people are suddenly now talking about theft at the parks.

Many years ago my husband lost his wallet to a pocket pocket as we stood in a long line for Jungle cruise .

The cm was sympathetic and told him that theft was the most frequent crime reported at wdw. After that he locked his wallet in the safe in our room.

Has any one else ever had any thing lost or stolen at the resorts or park?

In 30 or so trips since 1979 we have had two strollers, one wallet, sunglasses and a hat go missing .

I'll be the first one to reply to say in the 14 years we've been going, never had any thefts either in our room, at the pool, or in the parks. Not to say it doesn't happen, but so far, nothing for us. We don't normally take any extra precautions like using the safe, we just lock our room and keep an eye on our stuff at the pool.

A few years ago, I had a Disney sun hat (navy/white, wide brim) turn up missing - but sadly, I wasnít surprised. I use a scooter and would have to leave the hat in the basket when parking out with the strollers on certain rides. Iím sure the temptation is too much for some.

Last Oct I set down my Mickey Mouse reading glasses and must have walked away and left them. Last month I was on FOP and, stupidly, wore my white DVC member hat (got free on Disney cruise) when it ripped right off and plummeted to the depths to be forever lost. Oh, and, in March my DVC member MB (the expensive ones you buy) popped off on SDMT. Luckily, with that one, it ws found and saved at the ride where I went and retrieved it about 20 mins after I lost it.

No stolen items. And DS once left his wallet at OKW on that stadium seating area and got up and walked away. He was about 12. He had a bunch of money in it. Yet, there it sat when we went looking about 1-2 hours later. With all his money in it.

I would imagine that with magicbands, pick pocketing at WDW has decreased. Unless we are roomless, we usually don't carry our wallets to the park. If I was pick-pocketed, at best they would come away with a showtimes guide.

I suspect the number of dropped, lost and left behind items vastly outnumber the number stolen

Sorry, looking at the title, I thought you meant Disney picking our pocket all the time.

We have never had an issue with anything stolen. We have forgotten items in rooms; ran over my glasses with my scooter one time (switched to cheap reading glasses after that), etc.

We once left one of those mister fans that was attached to a lanyard with around $30 worth of pins on it laying on a bench in a smoking area. We quickly realized it, and returned to that spot within 5-10 minutes, but it was gone. While we certainly made the mistake of leaving an item in a public place, someone was obviously watching and grabbed it right away, so I'll count that as 1/2 theft, 1/2 stupidity on our part.

Other than that, never had an issue, even with misc items left in a basket on a scooter (never anything valuable - ponchos, refill mugs, etc...all were always waiting for us on our return).

I should add that I use an ECV. Always leave items in the basket such as cooler, glasses, hat, etc. when I go on rides. Many times, we will hang a back back off the seat also so DW doesn't have to carry it. Ponchos, sun tan lotion, etc. in the back pack. Never an issue.

I do try to keep wallet in front pocket rather than back pocket but many times put it in back pocket by reflex.

For those concerned about pickpockets, need to carry their wallet, or just need lots of pockets, you may want to check out clothingarts.com. Great travel pants/shorts (and shirts if you like). They have 4 zipper pockets and two side pockets along the legs (e.g. for a water bottle). The zipper pockets can each be protected by buttoned flaps if you choose. The pants also have a special passport pocket inside a zipper pocket.
