Default Poll: Feelings about Disney and DVC

Well, we've been here for nearly 13 long years at MO, and there certainly have been some changes in that time. During that time, as with most relationships, our feelings about Disney have both waxed and waned.

However, the recently announced restrictions on resale have set us, folks who generally are "in the know" when it comes to Disney, on edge. More people have come out of the woodwork than ever before, bemoaning changes of the past several years and questioning whether Disney really is what it represents, and whether our feelings about it have changed.)

[Disclaimer: I, personally, have a love/hate relationship with Disney. I love it because my grandmother worked there until her death in 1983; she passed that love on to me. And I can't tell you how excited I was to be able to buy into DVC. But as its commercialism has become rampant, I have become less and less enthusiastic, and at times, disgusted by Disney's willingness to use my emotional attachment for profit. Yes, I still love Eeyore. But Disney?]

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting to post a poll asking how people's attitudes toward Disney and DVC have changed given the more recent changes we've encountered (e.g., resale restrictions, point reallocations, increases in ticket prices and the "ticketization" of so many events; dramatic increases required in planning; and decreases in customer service).

Please note that this poll is not about how you THINK. We all know Disney is a business and has a fiduciary responsibility to its stockholders to bring in the cash. This poll is about how you FEEL.

So, how are you feeling about Disney and your DVC membership these days?

I feel, in a word, disappointment.

Mixed in with dismay that times are changing.

I posted my answer before the poll was up. I voted used.

I feel Disney is slipping more and more toward the cliche slimy timeshare company.

More of a love/dislike for me.

Love what Disney has always represented; the magic, the fun, getting away from real life crap, the nostalgia, family time.

Dislike the commercialism and blatant money grabs of late. And the 2020 point issue really made me angry.

All of that said, the negatives have not stopped me from still loving Disney. I still get a feeling like no other when I am there, and it's all good. it's still one of the few places that totally takes me away from the real world.Though the cost increases have caused us to decrease our frequency of going, and that makes me sad.

ETA: I voted "Used"

Honestly I cannot vote. I see the changes, and I understand why many people are upset. We have just been owners for so long that I think my view on things are just more practical than star filled pixie dust eyes or something. It's a direction that I don't think is fantastic, but I'm not upset or anything yet. I just don't feel like I fall into the I love Disney so much, I think I've just been looking at them with eyes wide open for so long that it just doesn't affect me emotionally.

Believe it or not the thing that bothers me most is not about anything with DVC, but with the direction of the over-planning in the Parks. I actually don't even care about ticket prices, because I'm one of those strange people who would pay more to have less people around me.

I truly feel disappointed with Disney and DVC. We were sooo excited to purchase DVC back in 2007. It felt so new, bright and shiny. It was DIFFERENT than all other timeshares, and it was Disney!!

We started with Boardwalk, then Vero Beach, then Bay Lake. Then changes started happening. VB dues started to really increase disproportionately to the others. Shortly after the opening of Bay Lake ( can we say points chart reallocation #1). Valet parking was eliminated at Boardwalk.

The recession in 2008-2013 really dropped resales. So we sold our BWV, VB, BLT and bought VWL resales in 2011 and 2013, fully loaded, at STEAL prices. Ok, we are set now, so we thought.

Oh my, here comes Grand Floridian! Could we possibly afford it! Well, so we sell a VWL contract to buy. Made a profit, made VGF more affordable!! We are done, so we thought.

Fixed weeks come into play now. I was taken back that now I was getting shut out at 11 months booking my home resort. So I bit the bait and purchased my fixed week CCV. We are done, so I thought.

Boom, here come points reallocation #2. Now this has hurt us more than any other change with Disney. Now I cant stay in a one bedroom at VWL Boulder Ridge as I was able to . Can’t stay a full week at VGF now like I originally purchased. Silver lining has been my fixed week! But that has also been eroded.

We are now really disgusted with the greed. Just put my Boulder Ridge contract on the market. We have our remaining contracts hedged in such a way that if we decide to totally get out, they should sell ( two small VGF contracts, December CCV fixed week). I am hoping Disney does not push us out any further. As much as we love what Disney used to be, we are not loving what DVC has become. We can move on if Disney makes us.

feeling fleeced.... but hoping that when all construction is complete it will restore the old Disney feelings of the past..... Definitely interesting in seeing how current DVC changes will impact things in the future.

I fall somewhere between mildly miffed and used.

I've been going to Disney since I was 4 and a DVC member for over 10 years. Everything keeps going up at Disney, DVC and DCL. Dollar by dollar it is eating away at the magic that, for now, keeps us going back. Realistically, there is going to come a day when we're priced out of all aspects of Disney. It is hard to imagine a day where that magic will be gone for me and I try to hang on to it as long as possible. DVC has given us the opportunity to probably extend our Disney days longer than they would have been without it. Eventually though the dues will be out of reach and when that day comes, I just don't know. I think they've lost sight of what Walt wanted Disneyland (and eventually World) to be, a place for families. I remember when it was the little things and details that made WDW such a magical place! Now it's all about what will bring in more money at the end of the day. I have been very lucky to experience Disney as much as I have and maybe, just maybe, will be lucky enough to continue to do so.

I am worried that DVC has been a cash cow for them [and i am ok with that] ,,,but are they going to mess up the value of my investment with all these weirdo new riles after Jan 19...ughhhh?!?!?!? I sure hope not. The SSR points that I bought direct in 228 have held their value so well....i hope they dont mess me up....either way, ill continue to enjoy my vacations i suppose
