Default Need suggestions

Our 23 year old son has asked for a camera for Christmas, and I wanted to get suggestions.
I am not sure if I should steer more towards a point and shoot or a decent DSLR, so good entry level suggestions would be appreciated for both. Or even another GoPro (the one I got him a few years ago bit the dust after a climb)
He is in the military, very active with hiking, camping, rock climbing, diving, jumping out of perfectly good planes.
Travels with us to Disney when we go. This past summer he made a habit of grabbing my Nikon D3200, which my teen daughter has taken as her own.

Please thank your son for his service. My son, 24, is also in the service - Army - so I can relate. A gentleman by the name of Frank Phillips, whom has been a little silent on the boards lately, is very knowledgeable about cameras. There are others also, but he is very good. His user name is FrankPhillips. Below is one of the trip reports he did. Go to it and on the first post of his click on his name. Then on the pull down menu click on send a private message. Hopefully, he will answer your message. Good luck all the best to your son.

New cell phones are fantastic. I'd only carry an additional camera if it was a high-quality DSLR.
