Default A word about scammers

Scammers are alive and well — even here on MouseOwners — perhaps especially here on MouseOwners, since our RTB is merely a free “classified ads” system in which anyone can (and does) participate.

People have been scammed here. I repeat: People here have been scammed!!!

When we are made aware of a situation in which someone has been scammed, we ban the scammer and label that user a scammer. (Hint: If you see “SCAMMER!!” in the user title, then you probably should avoid doing business with that person.) This action, however, is taken after the fact! We do this so that the user title might serve as a warning to those who might be in continuing contact/negotiations with the scammer. Because of the freedoms inherent in our forum software, however, we have no way of identifying members with whom the scammer has been in contact; we cannot send out “warnings” to those involved.

In other words, please do not let the scammer label lull you into a false sense of security, thinking that MO vets or scrutinizes those who participate on the RTB. We do not! When it comes to the RTB, you are on your own.

We do, however, offer the following suggestions for those MOs trying to secure reservations/points for vacations. Following these suggestions lessens (but does not eliminate) the chance that you will be scammed.

1. Check the relevant Comptroller/Recorder’s recorder to ascertain whether the potential owner is actually and owner:

Orange County (FL) Comptroller/Recorder (Disney World Resorts):

Indian River County (FL) Comptroller/Recorder (Vero Beach Resort):

Beaufort County (SC) Comptroller/Recorder (Hilton Head Island Resort):

Orange County (CA) Comptroller/Recorder (Disneyland/Grand Californian Resort):

State of Hawai’i Comptroller/Recorder (Aulani Resort):

2. Do not use wire/bank transfers or Western Union payments. Think twice about cashier's checks.

3. Remember that Google is your friend. Google the owner and his/her telephone numbers and addresses, and make sure they match up with the particular area of the country they're supposed to. If they don't match, make sure there's a damn good reason why.

4. DO NOT put your email address in your wanted ad. Scammers can and will cold contact you to try to separate you from your money, saying "I saw your ad on MO...."

5. For heaven's sake, get references. Check their activity and interactions on this board. Don't rent from people whose post count is non-existent or who don't have accounts.

6. Finally, remember that if it sounds too good to be true, IT IS!

This made me want to read over again the Welcome to Mouseowners.com-- the internet's most honest DVC community. The very first thing we have probably all read when we first entered this community. This makes me sad that our administrator/owner has to deal with dishonesty on her site.
Hopefully we will all heed this warning to help keep this a place of honesty.

Great info Kim.
I am would be happy to pay 1-3 dollars more per point and rent from a well known board member then to risk being scammed.

I am sure the owners of MO have considered charging a fee like $25 per year to allow ads (like the other board) and I was just wondering why something like that is not implemented considering that it could generate income for the board and add a small hurdle that scammers may not want to jump over.

I am also sure that there is a website somewhere that could act as a holding account for people renting vacations, but that would probably be more than $25.

Scammers make everyone suffer and there must be some way to put up some roadblocks to protect all parties.

Default Renters

This time when I rented the owner wanted to rent to someone who also was a frequent poster on the board. I qualified. I never thought the owners would care if the renter was well known or not. But apparently some do. At least it means the renter understants the basics of DVC ownership if they post here often.

Default Scammers

Thank you for your post. I actually witness someone trying to check in that rented from Craig List and it was bogus.

If the DVC reservation it is linked to a MDE account could it be bogus?

I have felt the MDE account does protest the renter. If the account accepts the reservation number it should be legit.

I worry more that the owner could cancel the reservation than it doesn't exist.

I feel, one or two scammer coming in here and giving all owners a bad rep.

Renter needs to be vigilant but at the same time not to be really stupid, it is still a timeshare rental.
