Also very interested in hearing experiences with this issue.

I have 3 times been turned away from restaurants for lack of reservation, once in May 2018 (Ale & Compass) and twice in early Dec 2018 (Kona Cafe and GF Cafe). In the first two cases the restaurants were nearly empty, and I suspect the same GF Cafe but I couldn't tell when I was denied entry. These experiences followed many years of success as a solo walkup at many places including the last two.

I think you'll get varying responses but I have heard of people being turned away even though there were empty tables. Personally I wouldn't even think of going to WDW without the ADRs that I wanted. I'm sure that your folks have plenty of time to make ADRs for February if they decide to.

This is going to sound idiotic, but itís worked for me. If they turn you away from a walk up, and the restaurant looks relatively empty, get on the app and make a reservation for the place. The look on the hostís face as you now have a reservation will be priceless.

Yup, they can always find plenty of availability via the app day prior or day of, I wouldnít walk up if not necessary. However, as only two people they can usually dine in most lounges.

Definitely what is said above. Last few trip we just look up on the app for available restaurants we want and book a last minute (literally) reservation and go to the restaurant we want. Typically works.

Ok thanks I just told them to decide what restaurant or 2 they might like that day and try to make the reservation before they go out.

It's definitely possible to dine in a wide variety of places making the decision the same day, but be prepared to be flexible. You may need to head to a resort, try a different place than you would have considered, or eat at an off time.

I'm not sure how ADRs work now, but once the earliest time you could get was 45 minutes out. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't walk up at 6 pm, get turned away, make your ADR for 6:45, and show up early. If they have the table, they'll seat you early.

Plus, Marrakesh begs for people to show up and Spice Road Table always seems to have tables, so if you're in Epcot, they should be viable options!

We enjoy bar service - if they are OK with the bar, they can do walk ups everywhere. Restaurants always sit you across from each other and if the place is noisy or sound cancelling . Occasionally I've found places with banquette seating, life the Mexican Cantina or TRex. I got tired of spending the meal repeating myself until he read my lips and then we discovered the bar.

Indeed. Go to places that don't require reservations. For example, even some seemingly-reservation-requiring places allow sitting in the bar or related areas and getting the full menu. Boathouse comes to mind. Go to happy hours and skip the formal dinner and then reservations are not required. Really easy to do, cheaper, and typically less food. A win all around.

Cheers.
