For me, it's all about price. Paying early bird can eat up the difference as both carriers are on the lower end.

Although, you can probably get a better seat if you pay with SW. I wouldn't know; I cheap out plane tickets and try and save every penny I can. Understandable. I'm compulsive about getting a good seat (aisle right) and since I'm generally flying solo, price is not as much an issue. I do admit I was a little irritated (to be polite) when they raised the price of Earlybird recently.

Primarily Southwest for me, but always worth checking both if you can wait.
