I honestly do not see it with hotels either.
Yes, they charge when you return. But all car companies that I know of put a hold. That's what they do when they swipe your card.

It's not an actual charge; just an authorization that will never show up on the card except as Pending. Only the real charges will ever show up.

Certainly not a definitive source, but this definitely matches my experience at the counter:

Actually, just found this from Avis, so more definitive

https://www.avis.com/car-rental/cont...inginformation

The Pre-Authorization part is key.

Here's one on hotels

Typically, they never show up.

Cheers.

We'll chalk it up to me missing something here and leave it that.

Different context. Where else are you encouraged to charge literally everything you do during the day to your hotel account? It's the pattern of multiple charges/multiple hold increases in a limited period of time that trips the credit card companies.

If what Disney was doing was normal, guests would not be having problems.

Look - it may seem normal and fine and dandy to you, but two Disney CMs - a front desk and a guest relations - have admitted they have work to do with the credit card companies to recognize these as legitimate actions.

For the record, I have no problem with the policy - IF IT WORKS. It didn't for me, and I've had Disney CMs admit to me that it hasn't worked for many others, and there are plenty of reports on the internetz of the various ways it hasn't worked.

There's a problem. Disney is working on it. I'm sure with the clout they have, they'll resolve it. As the guest relations person said, it may simply come down to Disney did things one way for 48 years and is now doing them differently and it's taking awhile for the CC companies to catch up. But there is a problem. Saying there isn't one just means you personally have not experienced it.

Alamo put a hold for the full amount of my rental when I picked it up, but since it was 17 days, the hold rolled off after a couple of days so I had to remember that the charge was coming.

I honestly would have preferred they charge the full amount up front and then charge or credit at the end of the rental based on any changes (early or late return, any unanticipated fees, etc.).

HGVC in Hawaii

All hotels we stay with have advantages for charging as much as possible (but, yes, not everything we do) to the room. So we do.

Cheers.

It’s definitely a combination of Disney and Credit card company. On our recent trip in May we used our American Express and had no issues. I also have it set up that I get a notification on my phone and Apple Watch every time a charge goes through my Amex, and I saw the hold transactions come through as we charged to our magic bands throughout our trip. Whatever they’re doing, Amex has it figured out and was never declined.

Same here. I have alerts and see every hold as well.

Cheers.
