Under the old system, we just watched our charged and paid down with gift cards when we around 70% of the room limit. Not sure how the new system will work in that regard.

The Magic also did something new this trip - they charged our card several times during the cruise, even though charges were load. I went to pay down the account with gift cards only to discover a significant portion of the bill had already been charged.

Good question about paying with gift cards. I didnít even think of that. I wonder if gift cards can be loaded to your room prior to making charges?

Cheers.
My understanding from the first thread, and what I read elsewhere, was that the actual charge still wouldnít come until you had reached the limit..... $1500 if I recall correctly.

Thank you very much for this tidbit of information, regarding the Magic. Weíre on the Dream in 4 weeks. We will use gift cards for most of our purchases. For our placeholder cruise, weíll use our credit card.

Of interest.... we used a gift card for all our purchases on our previous cruise, which included the deposit for our placeholder cruise. When health issues caused us to cancel the cruise, DCL refunded our deposit back to the original gift card, which of course had long been discarded. It took an incredible amount of effort, on both our wonderful TA, Robin, and ours, to finally get them to issue a refund in a different gift card.

This used to be possible, a few years ago. Iím not sure if it still is though. We had been forewarned about the problem with doing this. It is that if you donít spend the entire amount that you put down, the only way Disney can refund you the difference is in the form of a check from corporate headquarters. This may take up to 3-4 weeks.

The whole thing isnít really an issue at all for us. (I donít think it should be for anyone.) Weíll continue to just stop by the front desk every few days and pay off the balance with a gift card.

This is all subject however, to anyone who has had actual current experience with the new policy.

Default MB and Credit

In Oct we stayed at BC We put charges on our credit cards. Each Family in the 2 bedrm did separate cards. The front desk messed it up so badly that we spent hours ( no exaggeration) at the front desk trying to straighten it out. They put our charges on my Son In Laws Account etc. It was a mess that we still had to straighten out when we got home. They also messed up the MBs so they didn't open the room when they thought it was corrected. Horrible experience and they wouldn't take responsibility which really surprised me. Finally after we got home they admitted that someone "pressed the wrong button" when we checked in.! yes that is what they said. We stayed at Kidani a few days earlier with no problem at all.

Now my fam is soured at the thought of a stay at BC - My favorite resort! So anyway from here on out I wont put charges on my band. It wasn't worth the unpleasant experience and our vacation time lost. It Seems inconvenient at the same time. Oh well. Be watchful of that aspect of MB front desk etc.

Iíve not been able to preload a resort account with gift cards. I have been able to pre-load - or, more correctly, overpay - our shipboard account with gift cards. On the 2nd night we had a $150 balance and I put $500 down in gift cards. But then, DCL routinely handles stateroom credits while the resorts donít.

That is what I worry about now, not being able to use gift cards cause the charge went thru already. Then you are stuck with an unused gift card. In December before this new policy came about, I ran into exactly that happening one evening at the BCV trying to pay down the balance with a gift card only to see that a small charge went thru. "Sorry, it was a glitch" was the only explanation I got.

There are one or two reports of cards being charged earlier than they were expecting.

And some card providers can take up to 7 days to lift a hold on a card, even after it is lifted by the organisation who put the hold on it. That could have a post-trip effect on those who use a debit card, if they find they canít use it due to the hold still on it.

I also donít know how pre-paid cards work, whether even they can have a hold put on them. That also could impact people if room charging privileges are suddenly withdrawn, due to a hold exceeding some card limit (not necessarily a credit limit, just a pre-determined limit by the card provider).

So actually there are several possible implications for people, even though on the face of it the new system appears simple enough.

We were there when the policy went into place. The message that was on our room phone concerning the new policy stated that there would be a $100 hold on top of whatever charges were on our account. The message made it sound like you wouldnít keep accruing hold after hold if you went over $100. We were nearing the end of the trip, and we didnít exceed the $100 hold, so maybe someone who went over the $100 can give more insight.
