Default The Little Mermaid

I had this movie (to be released on Aug 17) on my calendar, figuring it was the Disney live-action remake.

But it isn't; this one is from "Comglomerate Media", whoever they are. The trailer doesn't look half-bad, but I won't be going, if only to object to their use of the precise Disney title. I know it's public domain as it was a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, but still, Disney got there first.

AFAIK the Disney remake is still in the works. At one point there was also a Universal version also in preparation. I hope that one died a quiet death.

If they keep to the original fairy tale it could qualify as a horror story. The source material is a little darker than the Disney version.

Agreed, not for me. Though to be fair I should check out the trailer to see if there’s at least some visual appeal...

If/when Disney does do a live-action version, I’d bet on it being much more major than an August release. Definitely should be worthy of a holiday/summer potential blockbuster. Live-action Beauty and the Beast was February/March, I believe, to take advantage of spring break.

IIRC the origins of the mermaid myth involved sea mammals that sailors who had been at sea a little too long saw as mermaids. And part of the story was that they lured sailors to the deaths on the rocks.

so true and a bit sinister for my taste...
I like how Disney "lightened" Ursula.

Mermaid translated to French or Spanish is actually siren. Which is apropos For what you suggest.
