We only ever use TIW. Is it just me or does anyone else feel that the waitperson gets very happy when they ask if you are on a dining plan and you say TIW, because they are guaranteed an 18% tip at that point?

Didn't answer poll. Haven't had the DP since 2008 or so. Thinking about getting deluxe DP on part of a split stay this Oct so we can share with SIL and BIL and do 3 signature dinners... and use snack credits at F&W.

Yes and service slacks off. I stopped mentioning we had TIW at beginning of meal.

That's what we do as well.

[quote=cpnkirk;1345635]I'm not sure about the DDP - we bought it on our last trip, but I don't think we got our money's worth. I plan to keep all the food receipts on our trip this year & compare.

I think that this is one of those things where no one answer works for everyone. We have been getting the DDP for many years but after reading posts here we began to wonder if that was the best decision for us. So we decided not to get it this past trip (last month) and kept our receipts to compare. We ate wherever we wanted, including TS, and saved about $320.00 for two of us over the course of 7 days.

So for us the answer is that the free dining plan is worth it.

It dumbs down the dining in Disney to the lowest common denominator. It forces Disney to make cheaper meals across the board in conformity with dining plan prices.

The savings margin is so slim that you can't have anything go wrong or you will lose money- one vegan, one picky kid, one family member who is dieting- it seems like any of these situations within your party will scrap any potential savings. The AP discounts this year have worked much better for us, especially those places offering 20%.

It is a fairly good deal if you are paying cash for your room and get free dining or when the kids are under 9, but after that there are very few benefits.

A friend of ours let the travel agent talk her into getting the deluxe dining plan which is really a rip off.

We get a TiW card and pay cash and have always come out ahead of what we would have paid for the dining plan.

Most of the previous responses apply to us. I really don't think we'd actually save money.

But in addition, my kids (and to a lesser extent, DH) are picky eaters. My kids rarely actually want a 'meal'; they want a PB&J and milk and no sides; or maybe they want 3 sides and nothing else. At a table service, they might want just an appetizer and nothing eles; or a main dish, but no sides. Unless what the 2 kids want happen to complement each other exactly so we can mix and match, we rarely end up buying 4 'meals' - it's usually 1 or 2 meals and a mish-mash of other stuff. That doesn't work with the dining plan. (Or at least, it didn't use to. I haven't paid enough attention - perhaps with now being allowed to convert some meal credits to snack credits and use those on sides it might work, but that's just too much work to even contemplate)

And I should add that even though our twins are now almost 15, their eating habits really haven't changed much. DS especially is still likely to just want a PB&J and milk, or just grapes and milk, etc. Even if he has a good entree (he does love steak....), he may have some broccoli as a side, but nothing else (and if broccoli isn't an option, he likely won't eat any side).

I really do not like running. I think being on the dining would force me to over eat thereby requiring me to run more than the 5 miles I run every day as it is...just so that I can continue to fit into my skinny jeans!
