Default "one last thing...send me your membership card"

potential renter - we communicate, he quickly says he'll take the reservation. i send existing confirmation, contract, and lots of references. then i get this request for my membership card. i said no, he writes back that it's "no big deal, i can send you mine." i said "no" again and no further word.

what's up with this? never had this request in all my years of renting.

communication began with an email from this guy via mouseowners, not a pm, an email.

That is bizarre. Why would you need to share membership cards? Does he believe that you are doing a transfer instead of a rental? Too strange...

Odd indeed. Maybe renter is confused about how renting works?
Did he say why he thinks he needs it?
I’d be careful. This may just be ignorance but it might also be some kind of scheme. Not sure what someone could do with a member card (except get discounts if CM doesn’t ask for ID), but these days who knows. People are coming up with new cons every day.

He would not need your member card to get discounts if he has his own. Weird.

Very weird . Was he trying to verify if you actually owned? If it was a transfer if might make some sense but not for renting a confirmed reservation. After all you can show him you actually have a confirmed reservation . Run away from that guy.

Default New to renting

I recently received a PM about a wanted ad. I gave him my email address and he sent me a copy of his membership card. I hadn't read anything here or elsewhere that an owner should show his membership card to a potential renter. I stopped responding as I was unsure if he was for real or just a scammer.

I always have a three way call with member services to validate points and that they can be transferred. I could always do this for a rental if needed. That is all the verification someone would need.
