There are two ways to go about it depending on your needs. A VPN essentially reroutes and "tunnels" your traffic to another location (like your employer which you have experience with)

You could go with a VPN provider like ExpressVPN ($99/year and can connect 3 devices) or PrivateInternetAcess ($40/year and can connect 5 devices) and they would essentially shield your traffic and keep you safe, while being able to get around restrictions. It routes traffics to their servers and have both been shown not to keep logs of anything.

Or you could setup your own at home for as little as $50-$60. The cons are that you would have to have some technical knowledge or know somebody who does (like me!! I love helping people with tech) and that it may not as be as fast as a VPN provider (the little machines top out at around 30mbps, but it also depends on your home internet speed) but that may not matter as most public wifi is slow anyway, and that VPN into your home network still wouldnt shield your data from your home internet provider (if you care about that). The Pros are that you have full control the system, and you can access files that are on your home computer if you decide you needed that.

If you'd like my help with any of this please let me know! I thoroughly enjoy helping people understand tech and its literally why I got into IT.
