I actually get why they had to do that. If they have documented cases of not protecting their assets it sets a precedent that could be considerably more far-reaching than a school fundraiser. They don't have much of a choice.

Now, perhaps Disney could make a $250 donation to the school

Cheers.

A movie about “loins” could result in a lot more trouble for the school...

Sorry, Sherry, couldn’t resist.

The "fine" was initiated through email by a private company owned by the Swank family - they proffer licenses to schools and other entities to show movies in classrooms and gatherings. There are several competitors offering the same service. A savvy school administrator should know this and I wonder if the school/PTO is using the Lion King email in hopes of getting $ donations through feigned public outcry and blaming Disney, who really has nothing to do with this.

This is exactly correct. It's click bait news and the social justice warriors believe Iger is now running around taking PTA fundraising money to pad the company line....

Disney has every right to protect their property but as you said, had nothing to do with this particular event.

I paid my licensing fees when I ran my fundraiser. So should they!

The subject seems misleading. The school was sent an email telling them they owed $250. I didn’t see any mention that they were actually sued...more like assessed a fine.

Headline should be.

"School sent bill for License fee to Show Copywrited film in Public"
