Yep, remember the water skiing!

We were always just day visitors back then so no great knowledge of the resorts although we did Hoop de Doo a couple times over the years way, way back when. But first visit was '72 so surfing was done by then it sounds like. I had heard of the Wave machine at the Poly and that it would eat up beach or something so it was closed but though more body surfing, not full on board surfing.

Well, I am older than dirt, and I don't remember surfing, but I have personally been water skiing on that lake and have seen Goofy water skiing in full costume on that lake.

Was in 10th grade in 1971 but at that point didn't know about WDW - made our first and only visit to DL in 1972.

I was one in 1971. First visit? I was 35. Thank goodness my husband convinced me to go that first time.

9 in 71 first visit Feb 1972. I remember seeing pics or drawings of the waves but never saw it running. Found this blast from the past too. They wouldn't let you stray too far from the contemporary though. Does anyone remember a model of the park. I think it was located in where the town square theatre is now?

Man, y'all are old. My parents hadn't even met in 1971.

I seem to remember a swimming area at Fort Wilderness. It is curious now to think about how that all changed.

I'd heard about the surfing before. I do wish they would do more with the lake, but I guess there is the gator issue now. Was it not as much of a concern back then for some reason?
