I have no personal experience with either of these. -- Suzanne
I think Costa Maya is the better ruins port. Cozumel being an island off the coast of Mexico makes it difficult to go see any of the "good" ruins. And anything on Cozumel itself is not worth seeing.....Mayan ruins that is.

This is great. We are planning on heading out in OCt for this also. Thanks for the asking this.

The only comment I would make is that Castaway Cay is great on its own without a shore excursion. People enjoy the excursions but they aren't necessary. So if you are working with a big budget, go ahead and do what you want, but if you are working with a smaller budget, choosing no shore excursion here may help you to afford something really special that was feeling out of reach somewhere else.

We are just finalising everything and am not sure if we should do the Extreme Getaway Package at CC. It includes Bike hire, Snorkling and feeding the Sting Rays. Any thoughts would be appreciated

July 2013 Western here -- already thinking of port adventures ourselves.

Our stop at Costa Maya is too short to see the ruins

Cozumel we are thinking about the:

It came highly recommended by the concierge manager on the Dream.

At CC we LOVE the family cabanas.

One thing I would *strongly* recommend is putting some "vacation" in your cruise. Don't do big adventures at every stop.

Which week are you cruising? We are also cruising in July 2013.

Castaway Cay - parasailing

Other ports - not sure yet. We are a group of 11 and I am sure we won't all be doing the same thing.

I would agree with this - one of the things I don't like about the Western itinerary is 4 ports instead of 3, so loss of a sea day.

Chankanaab National Park in Cozumel gets good reviews on Trip Advisor and is something you could do on your own.

I believe the ruins on the Disney tour are San Gervasio, which is a recreation. The nicer ruins are Tulum, but takes a loooong time to get there and is a full day. Xcaret looks fun, but that would be a more full day, too, given its on the mainland.

If your group likes to snorkel, Chankanaab gets good reviews. There is also Nachi-Cocom, which gets very good reviews, and has a snorkeling excursion to one of the best reefs.
