What an interesting thread!

We love being spoiled at DVC villas, however it wasn't always this way....when we moved here on bare high desert land of juniper trees and sagebrush we lived for 5 long months in an old travel trailer with 7 large dogs. At first no electricity, no water, no phone, no jobs...it was heaven! Then electricity enabled us to use a microwave (sitting outside on a card table), drill a well (cold water only), and we rented a portapotty. Showers consisted of a hose left in the sun to warm the water. We worked in the meantime building our house and caring for all the dogs.

The thunderstorms with lightning striking nearby were pretty exciting, especially when it freaked out the dogs. The best memories were watching meteor showers while laying on cots outside in August, and on Thanksgiving day when we turned the power on in our unfinished home and the furnace worked so we moved in! There was 9" of snow on the trailer roof by then.

My husband still camps when he goes hunting but I,..I...cannot bring myself to want to go unbathed for long stretches or be eaten by various insects. I love, love, love my DVC rooms with AC and comfy beds.

I love the outdoors, but I prefer to view them from inside. Or from Wilderness Lodge. Seriously, I love being outdoors, but not sleeping outdoors. When I went on safari, I stayed at a luxury camp. That I don't mind a bit!

When I was younger I really liked camping, but not the type one had to pack into carrying everything they would use.
Nice campgrounds, with a quality tent, sleeping bag, and air mattress.

Roughing it was the field exercises we had when I was in the Army.

Now I still somewhat enjoy camping, but prefer having a private place to shower and use the toilet. It seems the older I get, the more I care about this.

I think I would enjoy RV camping, if I had the skills to drive an RV.

So basically I like the outdoors, as long as I have my bubble of luxury to retreat to.

I have a bit of an Update. The Kid (DD18) moved to the beach for the summer and got a Summer Job there. Well we wanted to visit as much as we could but rooms at the beach are way to high to go as much as we wanted. So We decided to give Camping another try. Well got a new tent and few other items and 2 weeks ago off we went. Now this is a Family Campground that has everything you could need (even rented a golfcart lol) . But setting up a new Big Tent (2room and screened in area) during High winds and rain ( 12 tornados touched down in our state that night lol ) reminded me very fast why we went to Hotel rooms.

Well everything turned out great DW even enjoyed herself and we are heading down again this weekend. They have no sites so it will be group tent area with no hookups going to miss my electric lol

Here's our new Weekend House

While I've spent most of my life outdoors playing and now coaching baseball (and now softball), and playing football, playing golf, running and sweating like a pig while trying to stay in shape, you can't pay me enough to sleep in a tent on the ground in a bag.

My brother, on the other hand is the complete opposite. Mountains, fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, boating. You name it. And we both grew up in the same 800 square foot row home in Southwest Philadelphia.

See, I love to do things outdoors, as long as I have access to some sort of luxury or comfort when I'm done - air conditioning, resort accommodations, clubhouse, private restrooms, showers, whatever. I feel like at this point in my life, I don't need to rough it. I prefer to treat myself.

I also don't want to be in a situation where I have no access to expected comforts, or no way to get out of an uncomfortable situation. Therefore, I won't go on a cruise ship, you won't see me on a deep sea boat, you won't see me camping. I always need an out. Camping and roughing it don't provide that, so I won't do it.

Also, I'm not visiting people and sleeping on the floor or cramming into a small house. We're staying at a hotel. Don't care who we offend in the process.

I think you can be attacked by bugs any place. A cockroach fell on my husband one night while we were sleeping in a beautiful suite in Hawaii.

Another time in Hawaii at Suflay's house I was dreaming someone was tickling my cheek, and suddenly awoke to feel giant cockroach antennae instead! It was on my pillow!

Then, on the flight home from our last visit to WDW in May I was bit on the leg apparently by a tiny spider and arrived home to find my leg swollen and red with large pustules from the bites! Yes, even lizards live in the palaces of kings.

30 years ago I would camp, hike (200 miles per summer), kayak (yes I am an Eagle Scout) when ever possible. 22 years ago went to the occasional camping and kayaking (serious work life). 21 years ago after we got married the kayak went away and camping occasionally. First three times my wife and I went camping fall/early winter it would either snow or ice on us so the camping went away.....

Fast forward to 4 years ago when our son started in Cub Scouts so far 4 trips with my boy under the starts. He would prefer a camper but I will not go there because of maintenance, insurance and especially towing said camper. Towing things and I don't get along. My wife and I talked about getting a camper 5 years ago and I stated my case on why I did not want a camper and we could use that money to purchase DVC instead. So here we are on bug free trips to FLA and now I get to tent camp with my son!

On our most recent camping outing my DS7 exclaimed that he loved camping more than Disneyland. That should save me a lot of money in the future. We have actually decided to forego the AP (a decision made easier with the last price hike) and curtail Disney trips to once every couple years to leave more vacation time for camping while they are still young and enjoy it.
