Default Midwesterners cooling off in Florida in November? PT4

Morning brought clouds and wind. When we got up we looked out the window and noticed that we seemed to be getting close to Castaway Cay. DS had a better night with his cold but still had a pretty bad cough. We kind of just hung out in the room watching as the captain started backing in to the port.

It was taking forever, then we stopped and began heading forward. Circled around and headed back again. Once again we never made it in. Since it was our first cruise I was curious what the problem was. Next I knew the captain was on the intercom explaining the problem. There was a low pressure system creating a NW wind and just our luck that is about the only direction that makes it very difficult for them to dock. He was very thorough with his explaination and he promised to keep us informed as they would be trying again.

BUMMER! Even though it was cool and cloudy it would have been nice to get off the boat. We headed up to breakfast to pass the time. Another great meal and all was well. The captain tried again with no luck so the adgenda was changing to a day at sea.

Within an hour the staff had changed the navigator and adjusted everything as far as shows and movies. We decided to go see the Santa Clause 3. The theater they have on the boat is big. Not huge but big. When we arrived, about 5-10 minutes early, we found there was only a few seats left. In the front row. No big deal because it was a good show and we had a great time. No better way to pass the time in our opinion. The kids loved it.

As the movie was ending I could feel the ship reversing again. The thoughts in my head were saying awesome. We are finally going to get some time on Castaway Cay. Even if we would be in sweats and jackets. Isn't this the Carribean? As we walked out of the theater we found out there was one last try. But the wind and currents were still too strong. Thanks to Captain John for the effort! DS shared his gratitude later when we met him in the gift shop. We had him autograph an ornament we purchased.

Part of the schedule change was offering a afternoon showing of Dreams. What a great show. The kids sat still the entire time it was showing. Thats pretty impressive. Now they say no flash photography but if you were there you knew that most people didn't know or listen to that fact. I had a camera that I could use without a flash and did fairly often. My only bad experience on the entire cruise was when a lady sitting next to me pointed at me and shook her head no. Like I was a child. I explained it had no flash but I don't know if she got it. Oh well.

Had another great dinner and spent a nice evening with the family. We did some shopping and found matching shirts for a family photo. We got changed and posed for some decent shots. Our kids still forgot their nice smiles but it was getting better. We then went up for some ice cream. It was so cold out we decided to go inside and found a place to eat it. We were trying to wait for the farewell event. About 20 min. before that the seas became rough. By the time the characters were arriving DS and DW were not feeling so hot. As they headed back to the cabin DD and I got to meet most of the characters. There were two in particular that I wanted to share. First was Chip and Dale, which DD used to call Chip and Munk. When one of the two of them gave her a hug he pulled her way back so far that her feet were off the ground. It was so cute!

Finally in a nice pixie dust moment Belle and DD had their picture taken together. Earlier in the day DD went to story time with Belle. When she went to get her picture that night Belle remembered her name. That made her feel so special.

After this picture DD began to complain from the motion. It was getting pretty bad. We headed back to the room and gave everyone something to help and all of went to bed. Seemed like everyone slept fine. I have to admit I would have never thought a 900 ft. boat could toss and turn like that. The next morning I overheard a crew member say that this night was the worst he had experienced in his 6 years on the Wonder. So I guess we've experienced as bad as it will probably ever be.

After a disapointing start the day wasn't all that bad. We did book our next cruise while on board and have decided to take it at a warmer time of year. Just so we won't have as much of a chance for cold weather. Tomorrw brings land... and shopping at DTD. Little did I know that only once I returned to shore would the motion catch up with me. Ever heard of getting your land legs back? Took two days and was a really strange experience.

That is all for now. I highly encourage all DVC members to try DCL. We won't pay for it with points again but we do feel it was a great experience for the kids. Hopefully next time our luck with weather and illness will be a little better. The good thing is that we have yet to do so much it can still be a fresh experience for all.

Thanks for reading!

Bryan,

I get land-sick all the time. You get used to it if you experience it regularly! It's just "normal" to me after one rough day on a boat or several moderate days. This was me the first time I experienced it---> HA HA

Thanks for the comments. It seems like when I tell the story about our cruise a lot of people kind of think the weather ruined it. I guess it could have but we really had a good time. Like I said, it just gives us more to look forward to next time.

I'm sooooo glad that you took an optimistic view of your tirp!
I'm so surprised that the weather was so yucky, tho the Wonder's itinerary doesn't allow for much room to outrun a hurricane or bad storm . (On a longer cruise or one with many ports of call, a ship will just sail opposite the storm, so to speak, and the passengers often don't even know that there was one! I hope next time you have wonderful weather and no storms!!!!!

PS. Daughter is adorable...love the picture with Chip but also the one with my namesake!
