View Full Version : Thinking about transfering points

I am thinking of doing some transfering of points to use for a GF stay in 07. We used points to do CR Tower this year and I noticed that I could do the same, it not more nights for fewer points if I transferred points for cash and paid cash for the ressie.
Ok so I am a little slow :hammer:
Anywho, I would obviously like to transfer to an existing member, less hassle and I feel just a touch more safe.
Now how does one go about doing this, I mean not through MS, I know I just call.
Does one ask for the payment up front, half now, half after the points are transferred?
Does there need to be any contract?
Any help would be super appreciated.

The only time we ever did a transfer, we used a written contract that *probably* would stand up in a court of law. We transferred 300 points to another member in return for two weeks at the Westin in Ka'anapali (Maui), so no exchange of $$ was invloved, and I can't help you there. Hopefully, the reservations will still be in our name when we go to take our trip in June!! Obviously, a huge element of trust is involved in things like that. However, in terms of actual transferral of the points, they usually appear in the account within two business days. HTH.

I did it three times so far.
1) found someone to transfer points to me; we emailed back and forth; I paid via paypal and he called MS. Took a total of about 25 minutes, and I was on a conference call the whole time!!! :)
2) sent a cheque via snail mail and had points transferred into my account (a fellow poster we all know and love)
3) I had some points I couldn't use after all that; someone was looking for a few. She told me that we would need to do a three way call to MS, etc etc but I said maybe not, based on my past experience. She paypal'd me, and I called MS and gave them her name and city (didn't need her MS#) and they did the transfer. I was asked to send MS an email as backup, but when it was received they sent me a note back thanking me for the email but saying that it wasn't necessary.
I felt comfortable each time since #1 and #3 were via paypal, and #2 was a know entity.

Well I did transfer some. I had 21 points in an 06 use year to rent out and I transferred 11 out.
It was pretty painless and easy. I think I would prefer transferring then renting. Renting makes me nervous right now.
The only other thing that makes me nervous is if they pay with paypal and then get their points, they come back and try to cancel the payment with paypal or whatever. That part makes me nervous. Hopefully that won't happen but that is the skeptic coming out in me.

I have rented points and that was nervous too knowing that an unfair owner could cancel the reservation out from under me without knowing - any transaction takes trust on both sides
cheers

When I had points transferred into my account I paid half by paypal. Then the owner transferred the points into my account. I called and verified with MS and then I paid the balance. It is quite painless and I would not hesitate to do it again. I prefer to have points transferred instead of renting.

Cobbler,
You've had a lot of great advice - I agree that "trust" plays a huge factor and the famous words "get it in writing!" hold much weight.
I've transferred and rented points and have had success with both. Just call MS when you are ready to do the transfer, they'll take care of the rest.
All the best,
