So lets say I make a reservation at one of the non DVC deluxe resorts. Lets say I want to modify my ressie a little (different dates, location, whatever) do you have to cancel and then do the holding thing? Or can a ressie be modified without canceling?

When points are committed for any use other than a DVC resort they become what are called "Reservation Points." Reservation Points cannot be used for stays at DVC resorts, even if you cancel within the published guidelines. The points will always remain Reservation Points and can only be used for non-DVC destinations.

In other words, you could book a Disney Cruise, cancel 90 days out, and re-book at the Grand Floridian. But you CANNOT book a Disney Cruise, cancel 90 days out, and re-book at Old Key West.

In addition, there are some pretty convoluted cancellation policies for the different destinations. For example, a stay at a Walt Disney World resort can be cancelled on as little as 6 days notice and all of the points are returned to you. However, a DCL reservation cancelled 59-30 days prior to departure incurs a penalty of 32 points per person. Until we get this info on MouseOwners, you'll have to look-up the specifics on the member website. Look for the section called Changing or Cancelling Reservations.

Reservation Points cannot be banked. Even if you cancel within the published guidelines and are within your normal banking deadline, you're stuck with either using the points before the end of your UY or you lose them.

Finally, per the "60-day rule", non-DVC stays must be booked more than 60 days before the end of your Use Year. Your stay can occur right up until the end of your UY, but you have to book at least 60 days in advance. For example, your Use Year ends on 1/31/06, you'd have to actually make the reservation with those points prior to 11/30/05 (or whatever date would be exactly 60 days in advance.)

Yep I knew all that. We booked CR Tower and lets say we find out that we may have to modify days. Would we have to cancel or can they be modified without having to go into that holding account and such.

Basically if we had to modify days I wouldn't want to have to cancel and then wait until Sept or something to book.

Would you have to cancel if you wanted to change from CR to GF? Or could you just modify with the point difference? That scenario would be very very very very unlikely but its always nice to know.

I believe the answer to your question is no. Holding account points are only cancellations 1 -30 days before check-in or remaining points from a change in reservations 1 - 30 days before check-in. As long as you are over 30 days away from check-in you should be okay.

If you want to change a reservation on short notice, whether the points go into Holding or not seems moot. Holding points can only be used to book a stay on less than 60 days notice. If you are two weeks away from your trip and decide to change resorts or tweak your dates, it doesn't seem to matter if the points go into Holding or not since you can immediately use the Holding points for your new reservation which I'm guessing is less than 60 days out.

Does that address your concern?
