Hi,
"Don't Leave, Mary Poppins!"
In a reported production move that seems on its face as implausible as flying with the aid of an umbrella, Steven Spielberg is planning to bring back Mary Poppins to the screen, using the cast from the current stage hit in London, the London Daily Mail reported today (Friday), citing Richard Eyre, who directed the show and is bringing it to Broadway in the fall. The West End Poppins uses much of the same ***** and virtually all of the music as the movie and was co-produced by Thomas Schumacher , president of Disney Theatrical Productions and British stage impresario Cameron Macintosh. "I would hope to use as much of the West End cast as possible and keep Mary English rather than have the role go to a big American star name," Eyre told the newspaper. Laura-Michelle Kelly performed the title role on stage that was originally played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney movie. She received lavish praise from theater critics -- as well as from Andrews herself, when she attended the theatrical production last March.
Thought you'd like to know!!! I want to see the stage production but not sure about replacing Julie Andrews.

Interesting.
I don't know if I like that though. Mary Poppins has always been my favorite Disney movie. I really want to see it on Broadway but I don't know if I would like a remake of it on the screen. Julie Andrews will always be Mary Poppins to me. :goodvibes

A friend and I were just venting about this "general issue" yesterday. Can't Hollywood come up with an original idea anymore? Must everything be remade or have a sequel?

They're hoping we have the memory and attention span of a potato:hammer:
This was what - the 3rd King Kong..... gee - I wonder how it's going to end?????:faint:
I don't think anyone could ever top Julie Andrews. Maybe re-master the original and have a short release into the theaters - but don't remake the entire film.
I'd like to see the stage show - but that's different!!! You expect a different cast, etc.

I agree with you on all counts. Up at the El Capitan Theater in L.A., they did a Mary Poppins sing a long a couple of years back. I didn't get to that one but, I did make it to the Evita sing a long. That was a blast... And with everyone in the audience singing along, Madonna didn't seem quite so bad. LOL

Hi,
Spielberg Quashes 'Mary Poppins' Rumors
Steven Spielberg has played down rumours he is planning to remake Mary Poppins. The Saving Private Ryan director was linked to the project by Sir Richard Eyre , the director of the London stage show of Mary Poppins. He said, "Spielberg wants to make a new film of Mary Poppins and we've talked about it a lot. "It will be hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success." But Spielberg's representative Marvin Levy counters, "I never heard of this and couldn't imagine Steven ever doing a remake of a classic - and a (Walt Disney) classic at that. "There's a Broadway show from Disney but nothing involving us in any way."

With all the other remakes out there, I'm sure it won't take long for another Hollywood type to try and remake Mary Poppins. Some movies just shouldn't be messed with :)

Based upon what I've heard, marketing is what drives this desire to remake old films and TV shows. Go figure! There's immediate name recognition for something like "The Dukes of Hazard" or "Miami Vice" and you also have the curiousity factor--people who liked the original source show or movie enough to go see the remake.
Besides, from my perspective, there really aren't many original ideas out there anymore. Does anyone really think that the TV series "House" is any different from "Gray's Anatomy", "ER", "Chicago Hope", "St. Elsewhere", "Trapper John, MD", "Marcus Welby".......

On the surface, those shows may seem alike but, it's the characters and their personal lives that make them vastly different.
I think there are ways to make original ideas out of TV shows. The Brady Bunch movie from the early 90's is a perfect example of that.

Ok - so Julie Andrews had to have the surgery on her throat (vocal cords???) many years back - and I remember reading that she was devastated that she could no longer sing after the surgery.... is that still the case? I really can't remember. And come to think of it - none of her screen roles have included singing, and she branched out in to writing, etc. ..... So lucky for us that we have what we do of her voice recorded.
