Transferring points

I suddenly find myself in the situation of needing about 18 points for next October's trip. I don't want to erode future plans, hence my sudden interest in points transfer. :)

I know that in any given year, I can only have a transfer in one direction (in or out). What else should I know? Cliff notes version, if you don't mind.
