It's my birthday! I'm such a kid at heart that I still love my birthday, even though I wish there were a few less candles on my cake. I was thrilled to be celebrating my birthday in such a special place with a friend I have known for over 25 years. So I woke up in a great mood, ready for fun.

After seeing how empty the park was the previous day we saw no need to be at rope drop. But since this was to be our last full day at the resort we didn't want to get there too late either. We had a leisurely morning, Elaine told me she got up at 8, I slept until about 8:30. The park didn't open until 10, we were out of our rooms about 9:30. We went to the lounge and had breakfast, same as yesterday. BTW there were characters in the lounge both days, chip and dale were there today, yesterday Mickey was there. Since it was unexpected and free it was a nice bonus.

The plan was to start out at the Studios, spend the morning there and leave after the 1PM parade.

The studios in Paris DL have some attractions in common with MGM (R&R, Art of Animation Tram Tour (with catastrophe canyon), as well as HISTA from Epcot. There are also 4 or 5 attractions unique to DLP, and the Cars Action Stunt Show currently at MGM that is "borrowed" from DLP for the 50 year DL celebration. Neither of us wanted to see the stunt show, it was 45 minutes long, more time then we wanted to invest in something neither of us was very interested in. We only 2 days to tour and we wanted to do the stuff we liked best. I'm sure if we had more time we would have checked it out, but since we didn't I'll catch it at MGM in WDW in January,

I wasn't that excited about the studios, saw no reason to do HISTA as I read it's exactly the same as the one in Epcot that I have seen many times, same for the animation and the tram tour. I'm not a coaster person so R&R was out for me, and Elaine wasn't into it enough to go solo. Both Elaine and I preferred to do the MK rides we really loved that were different than their WDW MK counterparts to doing the studios rides that were exact replicas. There were 2 or 3 things that didn't interest us There were two attractions I'd read about that were unique to DLP and supposedly super, Cinemagique and Animagique. So that was the plan, see the two shows (both of which were each about half an hour long), do a little shopping/walking around and then see the parade, have lunch and go back to the MK to redo our favorite things. The studios is still a work in progress, there's a lot less to do there than in DLP's MK, and also less to do than in MGM studios in FL.

The walk from our resort to The Studios was less than five minutes. The place looks nothing at all like MGM in WDW. The big hat is there, as is the earful tower, but the layout is 100% different. We stopped at Guest services to inquire about getting an "It's my Birthday" button, but they said they don't do that in Paris. They did give me a large pin (one that was for sale in the stores there, pin-trader style) that said Happy Birthday on it, which was a nice surprise. Other than that, although we did tell them it was a birthday trip, no recognition was made by the hotel for my birthday. Oh well. I didn't take it personally, I could see that the French are very understated, they don't make a big deal about such things.

After guest services, which is just inside the entrance, we proceeded into the park itself. You pass through a large hangar looking building that has shops and some fast food, and then you go out into the park itself. The partners statue greets you as you enter.
We arrived about 10:10, and proceeded to Animagique. Well this was the beginning of our Studios "curse" or so we called it. Animagique was closed and wasn't going to be opened again until the day we left. OK, we decide not to let that bum us out too much. So we walk over to Cinemagique, it's going to start in about 10 minutes. Yikes! The cm says there are technical difficulties and to try back later! We both look at each other, shrug and decide it was not meant to be. Decide to leave and head back to the MK.

Here's where things get a little foggy--and no, not because I was drinking French Wine, I wasn't drinking any alcohol at all. It was just that it was the second day, and since it was not my first time I pretty much forgot what order we did what in. I can tell that we did HM (phantom manor really but we never got used to calling it that) at least 8 more times, that's both our favorite so we went nuts going over and over. I had read that if you look up at the window occasionally a ghost parts the curtains and looked out, and sure enough we waited a while and were able to see it, that was neat. Also the cm's more than once freaked us out by sneaking up behind us and saying BOO! (while on line) or sticking their heads into the doom buggy at the last second and staring at us. I love when they do that at WDW, and of course I loved it here too. One of them repeatedly stood near us in the stretch room saying "ha ha ha" in a creepy voice. I am sure they recognized us since we kept going on so many times, and they figured we'd enjoy the interaction.

We did pirates at least 4 more times, IASM twice, Pinochio 3 more times because we were looking for a hidden mickey we'd read about and it took us three more times to finally see it. We did an attraction called Mystery of the Nautilus which we both found silly. It was a mock up of a submarine, but it didn't do much otherwise, we didnt find it "mysterious" in any way. Once was plenty to do that. As I said I am not a coaster person, I kept encouraging Elaine to do TMRR but she didn't want to. We rode the carousel, which is basically identical to the one in WDW.

We also shopped a bunch in search of the all elusive Castle Tshirt. I finally asked someone and was told that no, such a shirt does not exist. She explained parisians would never wear such a thing.

They do have pin trading at DLRP btw, but nowhere near the level that it is in WDW. Very few guests had pins, and most of the cm pins were the same from one to the other. I did get a few trades, nothing too spectacular, but they were at least Paris pins. I saw plenty from WDW too, most I already had. I got most of my trades in the emporium one day, there was a CM with a board full of pins, and you could trade as many as you wanted. Even then only 3 interested me, as most were run of the mill and I could get them in FL. BTW in spite of what you may have heard, the Paris cms were very nice, very friendly and I did not get one iota of feeling like they were rude in any way because I was American. In fact most who I got talking to were dying to go to WDW florida and had many questions about it. The cm with the pin board had been there, and in fact was well aware of DVC and quite envious that I was a member.

We didnt want to do the parade again, so we left, took a little break at the resort, and then walked over to the marketplace (think downtown disney) to shop and eat lunch. We ate at Annette's diner, which had fare similar to the sci fi dine in--shakes, burgers, fries, typical american fare. We had a tasty club sandwich and yummy onion rings, which we split because neither of us was hungry enough for a full meal.

I hoped against hope I'd find something I'd like in the marketplace to take home as a souvenir, but there wasn't anything that was special e nough. There was nothing uniquely DLP that spoke to me, it was, as I mentioned earlier, 90% kid stuff. I had bought a mini snow that had the sleeping beauty castle in it in the store in the disneyland hotel, and the shirt (I mentioned in another post) in the emporium, but all I could find in the marketplace were a couple of fridge magnets that were cute and had the all-elusive castle on them.

I imagine I am running out of alloted space, this will be continued in the next post.

After leaving the marketplace it was about 4PM, we had about 5 hours before Dinner at the California Grill in the DL Hotel. We once again attempted to go to the studios, and the show we had planned to see had difficulites again. We had to laugh. We were just not destined to see this show obviously. So we walked around a little until it was time for the (totally uncrowded again) parade. It was fine, I liked it, lots of characters, but I didn't think the floats were as elaborate or interesting as the ones in the MK in DLP. Goofy (dingo i mean) pulled me out to do the twist with him, that was fun. It seemed to go by fast, and Elaine and I decided to go back to the MK for the same reason we had earlier--it's the place we enjoy best.

I really don't recall what rides we went on in which order, only that we did all our favorites as many times as we wanted to.

A couple of things that I would have liked were closed for the season, critter corral (yeah it's a petting zoo but i like that stuff, LOL) and Alice's curious Labyrinth, a maze with characters from alice in wonderland. If you look at my pics you can see the huge cheshire cat where the maze is. I didnt know about the closings in advance, and was slightly disappointed, but it was no big thing.

We skipped the indiana jones roller coaster (narturally for me the chicken, Elaine had done it once and it freaked her out so it was no go for her too). We did this cute "adventure Isle" that is like Tom Sawyer only without the need for a boat to get there. There were some rope bridges there that Elaine was a little nervous to cross, but she did great. I don;t mind that stuff at all, so I was fine. Did without the (barf) tea cups (same as WDW if anyone is curious). We rode the railroad and the "backstage" stuff was pretty much the same as in WDW, Indian village, etc.

Since it was Friday (and close to the weekend) towards the end of the day there were actually (horrors!) five minute lines at Peter Pan. So we whipped out our all day fast passes and made good use of them, going on Peter 3 times in a row. That's the only time we used the FP's the whole trip.

By about 6 there wasn't anything we hadn't done to our hearts content. We did some last minute attempts at shopping, another abysmmal failure. I ended up buying a Pirates shirt for my 20 year old, she loves the JD movie and the shirt had "Curse of the Black Pearl" on it. She probably wouldn't have worn it if it was from the POTC attraction, not at this point in her life anyway. She loves fudge and we always buy some on our last day at the MK in WDW, so I bought some for her for lack of finding anything more original. My 15 year old daughter got the tink nightshirt I mentioned earlier, as well as a cool looking top I was certain she'd like that I had purchased for her in Paris in a shop we had passed during our travels. I was trying desperately to find scrap booking stuff to bring back to her that was uique to DLP, but not only was there no scrapping stuff period (a few empty scrapbooks to buy but no materials at all to decorate with), the ony stickers I saw for sale was a role of princess stickers. In the entire complex no stickers but those princess ones. I tried to be creative and come up with SOMETHING we could use for our scrapping hobby, but it was a futile search. Zippo.

The park closed at 8, we went back to our rooms (no fireworks except on special occasions boohoo) and got ready for dinner. Finally a dinner that was perfect from start to finish and didn't take hours! They knew it was my birthday from when Elaine made the ressie, and they wished me a happy birthday right away. We got a table next to the window with a prime view of the castle all lit up and beautiful. The service was great, so was the food, and the waiter was extremely friendly and attentive. The whole staff sang me happy birthday and they gave us three huge desserts to share. It was wonderful, we had a great time.

The next morning it was really cold, frost everywhere. Elaine slept in, but I ate breakfast and then went down to the MK for one last walk on Main street. We had 3 day passes, and unfortunately our flight left too early to really get much out of the 3d day. I was there when the park opened, there were very few people there, even though it was Saturday. I had a nice walk, said goodbye to DLP and went back to meet elaine. The cab ride to the airport and flight home were uneventful except I got a bug somewhere and by the next day I had a terrible sore throat, which my kids caught from me. We never get sick, we kept joking about the "foreign" germs mom brought home that we had not yet developed antibodies to. (see how weird you talk when your mom's a bio teacher?) On top of all that I had the worst jet lag on the planet. Yikes I felt sick for over a week all in all, hence the delay in this report. Happily we are all fine now.

Random thoughts that came to me as I was typing this:
There were amazingly few children there. I can see maybe since it was school time why there'd be few kids of that age, but there were a lot more adults and just about no strollers.
The hub is laid out the same as in the WDW MK, but the names of the lands and what is found where is not always the same. For example futureworld is Discoveryland.
Although I had heard reports to the contrary the parks were as clean as the ones in FL.
The TV in the resort had a park info channel that played in about 6 different languages depending what station you had on.
There was a restaurant I did not eat in but I was allowed to look around in, called Walt's. It was on Main street in the MK. Lots of walt memorabilia and pictures, nice tribute to The Man Himself.

To sum up: I am so glad I got this opportunity, and except for getting sick afterwards, I had a terrific time. The European version of Disney is definitely a lot less "in your face" than the American one. For some I am sure that's a plus, for me I found it to be lacking in the "feel" of Disney I know and love. Don't get me wrong, I don't need everything to be bright and glowing 24/7, I like to get away from the frenetic pace at times as well. But DLP was just TOO mellow for me. Well worth the trip of course, and an experience I'll always remember.

I just realized the significance of your reprts. Goofy/Dingo answers the age old questionof "Is Goofy Really a Dog?"! That would be yes! Now, could you tell me what happened to my other sock? ;)

Great report Mar. Took alot of work and I appreciate that.

Thanks for sharing so many details and all those great pictures. Seems like the castle at night is worth the trip.

Let Elaine know we're ready to go whenever she wants flying companions...

Thanks for all the positive feedback, as they say in Brooklyn (where both my parents are from), "Youse Guys are De BEST! Fuggedaboutit!".

I'll remind Elaine about your self sacrificing offer to help with her points TW1, LOL.

Carrie--I get the part about Goofy being proven at long last to be a dog since he's called Dingo in Paris, but I must be dense--what's the connection to your missing sock? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/12/12_3_30.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZZzebXXX)

Wow! Thanks for the detailed reports!! Sorry that you got sick after the trip, though.

I am fascinated to hear your account as the only accounts I have heard are from Europeans who don't do Disney like we do... I can really see how it would be different as it is geared towards the European preferences.

My sister and I have both tried to get there over the years (I actually had free tickets to opening day at DLP) but have never made it. Maybe next year is my year to visit, as I plan to take a break from WDW for awhile.

Hi mar

loved the rest of your report. If they had fireworks everynite your seat at the CG would have been fantastic, happy you finally had a good meal with good service. (oh and thanks for answering my fireworks question LOL)

Sorry to hear you got sick on the ride home, i caught something coming home for my Oct trip and was laid up for 3 days, i can only imagine how bad you felt with jet lag on top of that.

Between your October trip, then paris, getting sick, jet lag, thanksgiving, Chanukah, and new years your going to need that solo trip in jan to RELAX and do nothing.

You have a very special friend in Elaine to treat you to such a wonderful birthday, I'm glad you had a great time but as they say in the movies "Theres no place like home"

deb

"home in two days to celebrate christmas with DS#1

Woohoo! I finished your report, and thanks for writing it Mar! Now, if it takes me that long to get to it, I can't really blame anyone for not getting to the end of mine.

Sorry you couldn't find more souvenirs to your liking, but I'm glad you had such a nice birthday, and that you're done jet-lagging!

Thanks for a wonderful report Mar'!! I'm very glad that, on the whole, your trip was a success! Lucky you staying in a suite at the Disneyland Hotel - that's my little dream for the future!!!

BTW, I'm SO impressed that you know your WDW rides so well, that you can see even the small differences between them and the Paris versions!! :worship:

I totally concede that WDW is superior in a lot of ways - but I definitely think that we've got a very beautiful Magic Kingdom here in Europe!! ;)
