View Full Version : Anyone up for a challenge?

I was thinking for a no-gain for the holidays challenge. Weigh in this weekend and then take a final on January 1. You don't have to tell anyone your weight, but record it so you'll know.
I know it's not a loss, but not gaining over the holidays will be a big victory for me and help me start the year with intentions of losing.
Anyone game?

I am game! I will even find something DVC related on my trip as a small "prize" fo the person who stays closest to their beginning weight - or *GASP* loses over the holidays!!!
You had me worried for a bit though - if I had to tell my weight, I would scare people :hammer: hehe

I'll play, but I'll have to use today's weight since I won't be near a scale the next two days.
And I don't mind saying I weighed 163 this morning...14 lbs less than this time last year. :)
This is going to make our taper a LOT more interesting, eh Carrie? :holymoly:

You've got guts, Mel! I just cannot post my weight on the internet especially now that DH and kids know just how to look up the exercise forum:faint:
I will use the weight I was on Wednesday since I only weigh on that day each week:) It sure would be better for me if I could do my regular weigh-in on Jan 4 though. Weighing on the weekend is not good for my sanity:hammer:

Please - Let us know how you're doing at least weekly. Let's hope some of us actually lose. I just know that if I set my goals too high, I'll give up. Stayign even through the holidays will please me and help me start the New Year right.

I'd love to be able to play but I'm having surgery to repair a hernia next week. Not much exercise here for the last month, and I'm guessing there won't be any for a few weeks afterward either.
Hopefully I'll be cleared to resume normal activity by mid-January. I can guarantee I will be looking to drop about 15-20 pounds before the end of February. I'm sure I'll need your help then. :)

Oh, good luck, Tim. Surgery is no fun, and I hope it goes really well, and you're better very quickly.
If you have to take it easy though, this is the season to do it! Enjoy the silver lining - I'd love to have a good excuse to rest.

Tim - Please take it easy!! Your stomach will be weak after the surgery adn you really don't want the complications you could have from not following doctor's orders. My FIL had 3 to 4 surgeries because he did not do as he was told. Trust me, your family will feel better picking up your slack than if they worried because you could possibly re-injure yourself!
We'll see you after teh fierts of teh year when you are looking to get in shape for your trip!

Okay, I've officially lost 2 pounds. I think my goal in this here challenge (pardners) is to lose the 5 pounds now while the food is still not so tempting, then gain it back over the holiday which has me keeping this challenge at least, and then beating myself up for being weak in the New Year. What do you think?

Yes, I think you have a very good plan:beaniepro It is not working as well for me since I have already made three batches of Christmas candy (English toffee)! It is very hard not to eat it while I am cracking it to put into Christmas tins! When I weighed today, I was up a half pound:boohoohoo I think I might weigh again Friday in hopes that half pound will go away...

Now see, we should all be making an album, not gifts. What are you doing making Christmas gifts, anyway? You've still got well over two weeks! Jeesh! When I'm working, I totally forget to eat. On Tuesday, we were there for 12 hours, and I ate an apple and a mug of tea. So my fear is that I'll finish this album, and then come home to pretty much the best (and worst food for you) of the year, and kind of go insane. But I'm not usually too insane, so maybe it'll work out. But the cookies at my MIL's are a real problem.

j - Try not to eat so little on studio days. Your body will think it's starvingand lower your metabolism. When you sdo eat again, watch out.
Besides that, your plan sounds good!
I went up Mon adn Tue but was back down to weigh-in weith this morning. yeah!!!

12-08-2005, 04:50 PM
I know, and the last thing I want is to lower my metabolism, lol. But seriously, you'd need to put a sticky on the sound board or something so I'd remember. Actually, that's not a bad idea! One of the engineers is even worse than me - he never eats. And the other one eats throughout the day. So when I'm with Neil, I remember, but when I'm with Jon, everybody starves.

OK...just back from a week at the World, so I am willing to take the challenge!
I walked...a lot....at the world, and tho I didn't eat LOTS I ate more white bread sandwiches, chips and fries than maybe for the entire all last year. My weight seems the same as when I left, but I've returned to the cold weather (-30 last night) sluggism.
So, I have weighed in and accept the challenge...my goal is to lose 10 lbs by New Year's Day. Lets just say: I made a batch of cabbage soup and other than 'party' days....I'm on the old cs diet plan.

(had a chocolate covered peanut butter and graham cracker sandwich with hot chocolate on Thursday when it rained from the candy shop on the board walk - just one example of my "good" eats while I was gone!) :bluebloun
I also picked up a little trinket for the winner of our "don't gain or who loses the most" over the holidays challange - a DVC luggage tag!!! - while I was down this past week. Come on people - you know you need one!!!

Ok , now I am really motivated...saw that luggage tag at the Merry Mixer and thought it was the coolest of all the merchandise!
I had some bad news at the start of the weekend...an short if not curt email from X 'giving me the courtesy' of telling me he got married the weekend before'. Hmmm...he really likes to mess with my Xmas's...this is the same time as when he originally left. I didn't turn to food, but the sadness/stress of it causes me to gain even if I DONT eat. (or maybe cause I dont' eat.) I need to start using weights, but I can't find the time!
I put up most of my outside and inside decs yesterday...i have a Victorian house that just begs for Xmas decs! I can't climb ladders since I had the last fall over 20 feet (3 of them all told)but I did everything I could without ladderwork. My kidhelper had his wisdom teeth pulled and isn't able to help me cut the tree (a 16 footer) so I am having a Xmas party without a tree (the focal point of my living room).
So...hey, a party of about 16 women who normally play BUNKO, but on the Xmas party we play another game or two. Anybody got any ideas??????
Whew, this was a long post.

Why is it you have to eat so little for so long to lose, and then if you eat once, your body magically gains it all back? Like one nice meal= 7 being good days. Aaargh.
Well, I sang a wedding this weekend, and did eat too much. So one of my two pounds is back. Not too bad, but really, I would have preferred to spend the calories later on chocolate. I'm just putting off the cookie making as long as possible so I don't tempt myself. And I'm having my "art pictures" done for the CD in the next week, so I'm motivated right now to try and be skinny. Not the easiest trick after three kids, but I'm doing okay. And I got my hair cut pretty mod this weekend, so I'm liking that. It's funny what motivation feeling like you look good is.
CB - sorry about your news. Just remind yourself that his method of being "courteous" should remind you that you haven't lost much.

You can ask, I don't mind. I will try to be concise though as the post may get long.
This is our first time dealing with an exchange student. I always wanted to do one and had the opportunity to do it.
So he came the week after labor day and was fine. As time went on he got really lazy. A friend from school would pick him up at 720am so he wouldn't have to ride the bus. Well it started to get very hard for me to get him out of bed at 7am. I would have to almost yell at 705 to get his hiney out of bed. Well since he woke up so late he would never eat breakfast.
I guess he was going to school and telling his friends that we weren't feeding him and that he was hungry. Well that is because he would never eat breakfast. So some teachers overheard and they called the center that helped send him over here. Well basically it was we weren't feeding him what he wanted. He thought dinner should be steaks every night. Not in this house. And he also thought we should have an abundance of cakes, cookies and convienence food for him to inhale. He had gained 15lbs since he had been here shortly after Labor day to 2 weeks after Thanksgiving. So he definatly wasn't starving. He actually ate us out of house and home. Our food budget doubled - for only one person!
Well not only that but he wouldn't do his homework because he was just being lazy. He would come home, watch TV, sleep, eat about 2 full dinners a night, sleep some more and his grades were suffering. He was so concerned about trying out for basketball that is all he wanted to do. Well he didn't make the team because 1 he wasn't good enough and 2 because we have rules that exchange students can't participate in sports the first semester here. So his grades suffered.
He also broke curfew 3 times in a 2 week period and was more interested in the social aspect.
The kicker was our vacation. It was our first trip home and he really put a damper on our vacation. And we all know that is just taboo! I mean he was perpetually 30 feet behind us and we are not fast walkers. Every ride in Epcot we got on he tried to take a nap. I mean every ride! One night we got in early and were all in bed by 11pm. The next morning it took me 15 minutes to get his lazy butt up to get ready at 10am. We were constantly slowed down by him and he was just downright lazy.
So when we got home I had it with him and we sent him home.

Athenna, I totally think that maintenance can be harder than losing, since you're very focused usually when you're losing, but trying to maintain is a lifestyle.
I haven't really ever dieted except after my pregnancies. This last one was a lot harder, but I'm there. I'd like to lose 5 more pounds, but I'm okay with where I am. I have to say that I also think it gets harder and harder to lose, the closer you get to your goal.

Aha!
Living alone, and then when DD visits her being sick, does have its advantages!
I cooked for Xmas Eve and went over to a friend's for Xmas Day, but other than that: no drinking, no eating except just grazing at home.
Sooooooo.....I am down 6 lbs from the day we all used as our 'measuring day'.
Of ocurse, while that is great, what isn't so great is that I have 25 more (minimum) to go. and what is worse is: that cute skirt that I bought about 2 years ago but never got to wear because I gained weight that winter...my kid said she was taking it and wearing it until I could fit into it. (She takes all my clothes, all the time, but at least now she TELLS me so I don't spend weeks looking for the dang things.
OK...do I win, huh, huh, huh? Or is some quiet lurker going to come in out of the blue and claim the prize? Well, wait, have one of the TWO boxes of candy I received for Xmas (what were they THINKING?)....great hand dipped chocolate!!!
Ummm, now eat the box and THEN weigh yourself!!!
Hope you all have a wonderful 2006 and everyone's weight loss dream comes true!

I don't weigh in until Wednesday but I wouldn't worry about me as a competitor this time. I know I will be up just based on the way my clothes are still tight:hammer: :innocent: Oh well, I know the cold pulled my defenses down although I am not sure being healthy would have kept me away from all the food in Disney and at home.
CB and Carrie, y'all did great and have a lot to be proud of!!:cheerlead I guess we need a new challenge for our new year for me to jump on since I intend to lose these pounds I gained.
Hey folks,
I was super-busy when you started this and technically didn't do a weigh in, but I was lurking-participating (if that's a verb!). Weighed in today and I'm dead even. I was sick a bunch of days over the holiday, so I didn't really have the chance to overindulge. Not that I'd recommend it as a strategy, but it did seem to "work" for me this year. :tilt:

Okay, time to 'fess up. I have done the "official" weigh in, and I'm up a pound. Bummer. But, frankly, that's a miracle considering I was with my in-laws for a week after Christmas, and trying to eat well there doesn't work for me - way too many good cookies! So I'm okay with it. Give me a week.
And if you're still checking in, Carrie, you go! Rooting for you on the marathon.

Hiya everyone.
I did well over the holidays - but I have a secret weapon, so I won't officially be part of the "weigh in". (reading - it seems that CB would have beat me anyway - way to go girl! :bluebloun )
I lost 4.5 pounds, but since I am not even 3 months post partum and am nursing, it isn't really anything I did to lose it. As a matter of fact, if I had eaten with any sort of restraint, I probably would have lost more lol Best to take advantage of it now because being back at work will catch up with me quickly. Too much sitting and not enough moving is never good.
So, I need an address to send this amazing prize!!!

OK!
Everyone seems pretty 'up' with their energy level and willingness to get back on track for the New Year.
I've been NOT exercising at all...which is weird, but sometimes I lose more weight that way....tho the image of muscle turning to blobby yellow fat is rather disgusting.
Llovell....tried to send you my address, but I was having difficulty even reading posts, let alone sending PM's...kept getting 'server busy' and other annoying messages. I'll send a PM off to you today (not that I mind posting my address here for everyone! HA!)
So today is the start of exercise: walking in the snow down to where my car is parked. And shoveling snow, which hurts my back but at least is exercise of sorts.
I promise to get back to my treadmill while watching TV format soon...maybe even tonight.
I am a slug, but I'm allowed. Tending to sick daughter over the holidays, finding out some icky news re X, dealing with scummy lawyers and judges...well, it is hard to put energy to positive use, but it is time.
Hey! I WON something! Good thing our weight loss wasn't tied to percentages of body weight!

I was thinking about buying the WW scale I keep seeing, I like it because it has hydration and body fat on it. But I wonder how accurate the last two are? Our scales here keep weighing us less than actual, and it does get frustating, especially when I think I have been so good and come to find out, I've gained. :scary:

No, alas, my home scale and the scale at WW never seem to match. And when I weigh myself at home, it is always 1st thing in the am. But due to work schedule (and my favorite WW leader has a new schedule) I get weighed in at 6:30pm:holymoly: which I hatem because I've had coffee, breakfast, lunch before I've weighed in.

Scales, on the whole, are pretty consistant. Don't worry about the number on the scale when you're trying to lose weight. Get a starting number and then weigh yourself weekly, not daily. The loss/gain should be as accurate as any other scale even though the actual weight may be off.

I'm up for another challenge. I'm tired of thinking "Wow, if I lost five more pounds, I'd be at my ideal weight." Five stinking pounds. That's all. And yet, somehow, it's a mirage, always fading away. I've been there (briefly) and it was lovely. But my body's comfortable here. It keeps saying, "remember the three babies..."
So I say, forget that, body! I'm putting the mind in control. It's silly to be so close, and not just do it.
What say you all? Are we starting a new thread? And someone help me work out the particulars here, as this is not much of a challenge as yet, more a pity party for me!

DSNYFN -- that's great!!!!:clappingh
I for one need a new challenge, and maybe if I don't just lurk, something positive will happen. I'd be happy anywhere from 5-15 lbs. as a result. Last year, I dropped 20 and then through sloppy behavior have regained 5...time to get it together again and stay more consistent.

So far, I've greatly increased my water intake and gone back to my eat light days. I am doing pretty well overall, but I still have an increased sweet tooth from the holidays:help:
What was your weight loss plan last year, nono? A twenty pound weight loss is great!:woohoo:
Way to go, DSNY FN; what was your total loss?
Hi Lisa!
I used South Beach and found it wildly successful for me. I stopped on purpose to plateau. Then, I got sloppy in my eating habits (and drinking habits) and haven't quite the same work out time that I had before my daughter came along...though I'm figuring out that if I dance the Wiggles 2x a day, it's a pretty good workout. :D
So this year, I'm combining South Beach with Perricone's Superfood list and theory to make a customized, slower plan for me. To kick it off, I'm on day 4 of a 5 day fast/cleanse. Since I eat like a linebacker, I was expecting this to be a very traumatic experience, but it hasn't been. Well, I should refrain from saying that until I've completed all 5 days! :tapedshut

Almost 6 pounds and considering what I ate in teh month of Dec I am quite happy with that number. Next stop 200 before Aug I hope.

Drinking a mud mix 5x a day. (psyllium and other herbs) Five more times to go! :doublejum It's been fascinating not eating, but I'm not having the cleanse experience some do. I do feel rested, as if my digestive system was overtaxed and is getting a break to just rest. I would have expected a lot of headaches, etc., but just a dull one a hour here, and hour there and that's it.
It is taking a lot of planning on how to reintroduce foods to my system...
BTW, this is not a plan for losing weight, but just for "rebooting" my digestive tract. :)

Oooh, mud mix, sounds yummy!:scary: :yuck: :faint: What DOES it taste like, nono? I did understand that you are just cleansing, but I am sure that kind of drinking will take some weight off:burp:
Well, it's ginger-based, and the manufacturer recommend mixing it with apple juice and water. It was awful. I had to cut back to the water only, which makes it taste like: NOTHING. It has no taste...it's just thick.
lllovell
01-13-2006, 04:38 PM
Not to sound ignorant, but I would think any weight lost from the actual "cleansing" itself would be regained when you begin eating again since the digestive tract is a fill up and move down the line process.
I am sure there is weight loss that occurs if this drink is low in calories though. (realizing that you are not using it for that purpose)
Yeah, I don't think there's any weight loss associated with it. I've maintained a constant weight this week anyway, since the MUD was in there. I'm very convinced now that I am madly in love with food, and not so much with booze. I would have bet the other way! I had no problem not eating, or cooking for the family, but man, I love thinking about food, thinking about what to make for dinner, etc. :loveisint
I don't think this love affair with food will end, so my next step is to harness the discipline that I used for the last 5 days to consistently schedule time for a work out. :sunny:
Replying to Laura on the term cleanse -- I use the word "cleanse" so that people might recognize the popular term today. I'd rather use "digestive rest" or "fast" because it seems more accurate to me (at least for what my goals were in this). :reporter:

I began consistent workouts December 2002, three years ago. For me, I picked early morning hours because I am too tired at night to do it; I guess my motivation is not as strong then. What I believe is even more important is picking a time that you set aside that is the same for all workouts. I think that helps to maintain the workout because it always happens then. On the weekend, I do start later in the morning than weekdays. I pretty much tell myself that it is a given I will work out. I don't ask myself if I feel like it; that would be a dangerous way to skip workouts:zipit:
