View Full Version : 'Soarin' in a Segway' Meet
Colorado Belle

...not to be confused with a Sore N in a Segway meet!!!!
THis is one tour I'd love to do again. (and those that know me, know that I don't often like to do the same thing over again.)
Although some of you have acknowledged your KlutzEness, I can vouch that this is really easy ONCE you get the hang of it. AND, that they keep you in a little enclosed space doing practice starts and stops UNTIL everyone gets the hang of it. (I had the hardest time at first cuz it is opposite skiing in the 'stopping' part..I finally had to relate it to 'pulling back' on a horse's reins to get it to stop and then it was easy peasy.
I don't know about dates, although it seems reasonable to do this on 'EPCOT DAY'. I know that the normal tours are done in the morning and you get to run around World Showcase before there are any people there...which is way cool!
This is just an 'interested' type sign up sheet, to see who might be interested in doing the tour!

I think the best thing to do is to have each of us indicate what day(s) we could make this tour...and then try to accommodate everyone with a common day. Although it would be nice to have this tour arranged on 'Epcot' Day ..since it is an early morning tour, it might work out ok to have it on any day that something else isn't already planned IYKWIM.
I enjoyed the first Segway tour of the day since that was the one that allowed us to explore World Showcase while it was closed to everyone else....more room to
SOAR!

Ok...time for us to pick a morning to do this...MON, Tues or Wed works for Stimpy.
I can do it any day. What about the rest of you? I'd rather do this on 'Epcot Day' and then just stay at Epcot for lunch and maybe do a Soarin meet after.
But that would be Monday and interfere with the breakfast at WHispering Canyon Cafe scheduled for 9:30 am on Monday....so if not Monday, then Wednesday woudl be my preference.

I'll be happy to meet up for lunch and do Soarin' together. Where would be fun to meet for lunch? Somewhere that serves adult beverages? :solikeiwa

I'd be up for the soarin' portion of this and possibly lunch. How do you feel about lunch in the Sunshine Food court in the same building as Soarin'? (Land Pavillion) It's my favorite food court, lots of selections and very reasonable. Hmmm is it going to be too much to do the boatride in the land together as well? We may be able to fill up our own boat!

As long as it is not Thurs we are fine with it.
I vote for the early morning one. That way, I will have plenty of time to make a fool out of myself in front of a limited number of people!!!!

Weds sounds good to me, but if you have to make it for later in the week, don't worry about me. :o Believe me, I know we're going to miss alot of stuff I wanted to do....just makes a good excuse to plan another meet in a year or two!

But think of all those targets that you won't be able to run over!!! LOL!!!!
I think that the first two times end before the World Showcase opens, so either one shoudl relieve us of people to aim for! Because you have to show up about 1/2 hour earlier than the time, I 'd vote for the second time slot because we would get to 'watch' the first group practicing in the little course they set up in Innovations and for those who are somewhat scared..this would actually help.
Lunch in the Land is fine by me...tho it is a rather hectic place and might be hard to find seating. I do like the food selection. Assuming an 8:30 slot for Soarin....it will be over at about 10:45 and everyone will want to SIT DOWN and relax our legs a bit. Also, some of us will be hongry!
We'll have to run (or have a runner run) over to Soarin to get fast passes...tho I'm thinking that we could ask for some at the check in for SEgway OR ask one of the CMs to take our passes and grab us some as we head out on our SEgways (if we explain that we have to meet up the rest of the 'mouseowners' for a Soarin ride in the afternoon....all that being said, I'd like to also consider a quieter, more seating option for lunch..maybe even a sit down lunch.
So I'm thinking we leave it at 'Segway' then 'Lunch at Epcot' then Soarin; and leave it at that for now...We'll pick a place and time well before the meet, but I think we need to get a more solid list for Segway and the time before we move forward on lunch.

...or what comes AFTER the monorail marathon!!!! What are those of us who arent'going to MVMXP gonna do? Probably drink!!!!! Let's see...do Bloody Mary's come with those SEgway tickets? There is a little saddlebag for carrying stuff...maybe we need to bring flasks? OMG, I'm turning into a lush now!
Even without drinking the night before , I'm NOT a morning person. So 8:30 is plenty early for me. Seriously...remind me to tell everyone to bring bottled water..there are plenty of breaks and I remember being thirsty.

Oh Mar, I've seen it before on other sites. But I can live with it, I need to stop being so sensitive to things like that. Besides, the world certainly doesn't revolve around me. However, It would be nice to see the horse stand up and kick the crap out of the man! :D Thank you Mar for joining my boycott of the new smiley!! :grouphug:

Rozzie..I just posted to community board and used it 4 times!!!
Sorry!!!
When I first saw it I really did a double take...cause the visual of someone beating a horse was awful. BUt then I realized it was 'beating a dead horse' analogy, which isn't meant (anymore) to really be about beating a dead horse just like runnign around like a chicken with a head cut off (or as we say in Hawaiian pidgeon "running around all cut up chicken no mo head") is about cutting off chicken heads anymore.
And after what happeded to me just now (you'll have to read the thread) it felt very much like beating a dead horse ANALOGY. so forgive me, sweetie...I posted before I read this here, ok?
How long ago did you Segway, BTW. THere have been lots of improvements and fail safes added this past year since the 'recall'. But no worries...I'm not calling anyone chicken, cut up or no.
Just glad you all want to meet up after, so that we can regail you with our accomplishments!:smile18:

Oh yeah, the Segway, sorry I went so OT! We did it last November. Has there been changes since then? I never fell, or hit anything. But I had a death grip on the handles during the hills. I might try it again, who knows! Let me think about it.......it would be fun to do it with you and everyone else.

( I meant that Roz told me that she might be persuaded to ride a Segway again)
ok...part two:
after Segway, we are gonna want to sit down to rest our legs and we will probably be hungry and thirsty. Also, a few less adventuresome MOs want to meet up with us for lunch and then a 'fast pass' (which we will all get first thing in the morning) to Soarin'.
So...how about the Segwayers (:veryconfu ) chime in on places to eat lunch?
I know a lot depends on how many people, who is or isn't on the DDP, food tastes etc. IMO, I'd just like to make sure there is seating enough, and maybe quiet enough so that we can hear ourselves think. If the weather is coolish, since we've been outside all morning, we might opt for something inside, or somewhere that can seat both inside and outside. i've had good CS lunches at Mexico, Marrakesh, Land Pavillion. I've had great sitdown lunches at Les Chefs (onion soup and a salmon appetizer)...but I've mostly eaten dinner at Epcot, so I need some suggestions here!

So does that mean we are thinking Mexico??????
(Please make a note: I tried to do the 'eat and drink around the world' meet at Mousefest 2005. First stop: margaritas in Mexico. Second stop: Norway for food
Third stop: China. At this point I realized that I couldn't drink anymore!!!!! And , that I was feeling a bit woozy. So: beware those margaritas and make sure we drink them only AFTER the segway tour:hahahaha:

Margaritas all around!!!! Sounds good to me...I am in the chicken group though, so I won't be doing the segways before hand, but I'm meeting you all after....But I do have a question....
Tammy would love to do the Segway with CB, etc, however, she isn't sure she wants to spend the money on it if she thinks she may kill herself on them...LOL....I thought she'd be physched to do this, but she wants to try it first...Is there anyway or anywhere she'd be able to test it out for 5 minutes or so somewhere ahead of time before she pays for it?
TIA
Colorado Belle
03-11-2007, 01:11 AM
Yes...someone wrote that there is an offer to 'try' before you buy....let me get that info and I'll email you with it Athenna.
Also, i'll call re the Segway sign up and see if they refund if someone isn't comfortable after running the obstacle. Tell Tammy that I did this already...and it really only involves standing on it and leaning forward to go faster, leaning back a bit to stop (sort of like pulling up on the reigns of a horse, but in this case its the handles) or turning the left handle to go left or right to go right. It isn't as hard as a bike because you really don't 'balance' because you stand midpoint between the wheels. The hardest thing for me was 'boarding' it.
So...everyone so far is up for margaritas. And is there food with that????

Athenna, I'm not sure if they still do this but when we were there in November, my DH got to try to the Segway for free at Innoventions. It was later in the afternoon and they had free mini-classes. He watched a short presentation and then got to ride the Segway around some cones.....maybe 15 minutes total? I'm not sure if they still do it and how often they do but it seemed it was pretty much on-going through out the day. No need to sign up, just wait in line.

How are you doing this? Should we all make our own reservations for Wednesday, 12/5 at 8:30am (sounds fine with me)? And I'm just curious-do you think that maybe more people would want to do this than they take per tour?
I just saw that someone asked about a free try-out of the Segways, and I didn't mention what I did (cuz I was so afraid-I'm extremely klutzy). There's a place in Innoventions West where you can ride a Segway (for free!) for about 2 mins. You see a short film, then they take you to the course, where you go about 20 feet, turn around, then come back. I enjoyed it so much I've done it on 2 seperate trips. Oh, and as far as where I'd vote to eat, Mexico sounds like fun, but virtually all of us are doing Soarin in the afternoon, the Food Court right there seems most practical, especially since by then a lot of us won't have energy to walk far. Although, now that I think about it, Mexico really isn't that far away. OK, Mexico's my vote, but I'll eat (almost) anywhere-I'm pretty flexible (and klutzy).

Hi, Simba's Mom
I need to call MS to see what options we have. Certainly at this point we are not too many (we had 15 the last time I went). I'll ask if we get anything special if we make it a GG event...but then we might lose our discount!
I'll check numbers and availability and then I 'll PM everyone as we can each make our own CC ressie so that we can all get that discount. (If someone is going that doesn't have the DVC or AP discount, I'm sure we can arrange for that.)
How does that sound?
Colorado Belle
05-29-2007, 04:38 PM
Currently we have 10 or 11 of us signed up for the Segway.
Normally, I'd suggest that we call and book our own ressie and get our own discount all for the 8:30 time slot.
However, there is a limit of 10 people on the regularly scheduled tour.
Over 10 and we need to go to a group tour.
I thought this was ok, but first talked to a notquitesonice CM who said that no, we would NOT get our discount if we were a group. Hmmmmmm, makes no sense to me.
So then I spoke with someone in sales who is going to try to make us a magical deal. If he does, I think we will be required to pre-pay...so a heads up.
The other alternative is to call and reserve the regular way and see if Disney, like the hotels and airlines, overbooks.
And of course if we could get a few more peeps to do this tour, I'm betting that we could combine the 8:30 and 9:00 time slots into one...and at least meet up for the group photo!
Supposed to get back to me within 24 hours re the 'group', so keep an eye out!
Thanks
Simba's Mom
05-30-2007, 12:04 AM

I have pretty good luck with my cell, but my landline...or should I say VOIP ...the thing starts beeping and I have about 15 secs to find another phone. I HATE when that happens...booking the SEgway tour takes at least 15 minutes tho...they have to read you a book of rules/waivers/etc...like what happens if there is a hurricane. Jeez...I don't wanna even think about so don't go reading me rules about it for goodness sakes.
Good luck tomorrow!

Moving on to lunch:
Take a look at the lunch menu for Les Chef and tell me what you think.
I had lunch there last trip and the oignon soup was plenty for me. But looking at teh range of salads, sandwiches and main entrees for @ $8.50 (the soup is around $6 I think) , I'm wondering if this wouldn't be a cool place for lunch?
They have a bar...so I'm guessing we could still get margaritas.
If it's margarita's everyone needs tho...then Mexico is a sure bet.
If we are going to eat at a sit down, I'd like to call and make ressies this coming week.
Now don't make me PM everybody!!!

Chef's de France is OK, but I've eaten lunch there several times and it's only been just that-OK. How about lunch at LeCellier? Since you're reserving so far in advance, maybe we could get lunch there, and I know a lot of people like it (I've never eaten there-yet). I also love the views from Rose and Crown. But really, CB, wherever you pick-I think the person who's doing all the organizing should get the biggest vote.
Hey, they didn't read me the hurricane waiver rules for the Segway tour-does that mean I can sue?
Stimpy

Party of 2 confirmed for 8:30 :kilt
There are still 4 open spaces for that tour. It is the tour around the world one right???
The CM didn't read me anything. She just said that we would need to wear helmets which will be provided for us. Nothing else. Cb, are you on some special list? LOL
I'm pretty open with lunch....anywhere is good with me. It will probably be our last Disney meal for the trip. :crymeariv

That must be it Stimparoo...I'm on THE list after almost drowning in the Living Sea. (If you drown in the LIVING sea do the cut out your heart and make you stay in the dive bell for 10 years?????
Simba's Mom..you are sweet but organizing this is little more than a phone call or two...and maybe giving rides to people on Segway morning: those of us staying at BW or BC need to get around to the main gate and I don't think they will let us walk through IG...I think we have enough car people to get everyone there.
So:check out the menus on allearsnet.com:
Le Cellier
Les Chefs
Mexico
The Land (but no alcohol drinks there and it's often noisy)
and for Stiparoo's last Disney Meal we really need to do something special....
so if you have a favorite place for lunch, let me know and we will add it here.
Rozzie

I *think* they will let you walk through, kinda like a bkast ressie, they have a list. I remember they did at least last Feb when we stayed at BCV and did the Segway. Really easy to do.

I hope she isn't chickening out (Tammy, I mean) last I spoke to her, she wasn't so sure...Which is surprising, she has always been a little adventurous...I will call her tonight when I get home from work.

Anywhere for lunch is fine with me. Well, that is a lie. As long as it is "normal
food in my book, it will be fine.

I know it is kind of late to throw our names into the hat for this, but while we are not interested in the Segway part we are very interested in the Soarin' and in seeing everyone for lunch.
I wish I could contribute to the lunch discussion, but really anywhere we can be with friends is a wonderful thing. Besides, while I have the sense to avoid anything there that says "McDonald's"...do you really want someone who last visited the world in 2001 voting on the best place for lunch?:beaniepro Hmmm, I wonder if the Norway pavillion has Lutefisk?:lmbo:

Hey Brian...
Glad you can join us for lunch and Soarin! ...How fun!!
Since dinner at Chef Mickey has been moved to WEdnesday at 5, we are going to try to eat lunch a little on the early side...maybe 11:30 so we have room for dinner!
Not sure if everyone will still want to do a sit down lunch with a big dinner at 5...but we best decide soon if I'm going to try to get a sit down ressie. I think I 'd best start a lunch n soarin list too and I'll be sure to put your family on it!!!!
Glad you're posting again! We missed you.

Although we want to do the Segway tour, Doug wants to wait until our friends from New Hampshire can do it with us. They almost joined us back in December 2004, but ended up leaving WDW earlier than originally planned, so they didn't have the time.

I am way confused, think I'll go look at the Sticky to see when we could sqeeze in the drinkathon.
What do ya'll think bout' squeezing in the drinkathon after lunch, before CM dinner?
I am open to any thoughts or ideas. I am a horrible big group planner. :hammer:

Ok, now you are confusing me even further :hammer: Wasn't the monorail drinkathon for Tuesday? Or is it being changed to Wednesday to go with Chef Mickey's?
CB, I'm still open to anything for lunch! Plain food or exotic....I only have to worry about DH's tastes (which include pretty much anything!) & NOT worry about 2 picky eating kids :woohoodan

Still tuesday. As long as it's a place that serves alcohol, I'm game. :cheers2:

Oh goodie..I'm so glad she is coming! We'll take good care of her, I promise!!!
Yea Tammy.
I don't know whether to start a new thread for all the chickens who arent' Segwaying but are joining us for lunch/Soarin to post their druthers on a place to eat. :Pokepoke:
Rozaroo...there is only 1 spot left for the SEgway Tour. Are you SURE you don't want to climb aboard??????
Do you think Le Cellier could handle 15-20 peeps for lunch at 11:30????

Does Tammy call herself to make the Segway ressies? If I call for her even though I'm not going on this, can I get her my discount? I know Tammy would love Le Cellier, we've never eaten there before...I'm not doing the Segway, but I would join you all for lunch..Being that it's such a popular spot, I don't know how easy ressies will be to secure. But on the other hand 11:30 is somewhat early, we may luck out.

Here's the phone number:407-9398687
Make the ressie and tell them about the DVC discount (also Disney Visa if she has that) and they will 'bill' your ressie at the discount price. then you are supposed to show your card when you check in...tho I don't remember that. I think that I could let Tammy go in on my discount if you aren't there early in the morning ...or if you are there, we are all gonna give you our AP passes and make you get us Soarin fastpasses early in the am!!!!!
There's several peeps who want to try Le Cellier and I'll be glad to try to get us a ressie. Also, there are a bunch of margarita drinkers...so I guess Mexico would be next on the list. I don't mind CS, but if its cold out...I don't want to eat lunch outside.
I think it will be fun no matter where we go!!!! But I hate hatehate being cold when I come to Florida....so if it is chilly, I know that after the SEgway I'm going to want to be inside
I count 9 of us on the Segway and Athenna, skelster and mrs, rozzaroo and mr, jiggerj, mar, so far for lunch and Soarin....now I need to find out how to poll or have someone poll for me re places to eat

Okey dokey! She does have a Disney Visa so she can just call herself, make the ressie, and get the discount! I wasn't planning on being there that early in the am since I'm not doing the Segway, but with me, ya never know! Luckily there is still lots of time for me to figure that out!

You know, now that I think about it, after perched on our feet for how many hours, it might be better to go to a ts and sit in acomfy chair and we waited on.
I can give up my margarita for another taste of ice wine.

WELL,
Ron and I went to a party the landlord of my office building throws every year.
They had Segways there for you to try out.
I climbed on like I knew what I was doing.
The instruction consisted of lean forward to go, backwards to stop, sideways to turn.
GO.
No helmets, knee or elbow pads.
I took off a little shaky, but got my act together and was tooling along.
He even told me to take another lap.
:innocent: Hey, this is easy.:innocent:
HA, then I went to stop for good. I stopped just fine and no one was around me.
I went to climb off the darn thing and started doing donuts on the cement.
No one was anywhere near me to help.
I did not fall, but I crashed into another Segway parked there and hit it so hard I knocked the controller off the one I was on.
We looked all over for it. The man that owns them (they do one hour tours around the historic district of South Bend for $45.00) told the guy that had "helped" me that he needed to help his people stop on the thing.
They found the controller, it had fallen off into the bag that was hanging on my handlebar.
Whew.
I guess what I did wrong was as I got off of it, I leaned to one side and that caused it to start turning in circles.
So, word of caution: I suggest everyone stay clear of me on the tour!!!
You have all been warned.
Ron thought we should take the one hour tour here. I told him if we did, I was bringing my own helmet. I could not believe they did not have you put on protective gear.
It was a blast. Can't wait to do it with all of you.

For some reason the visual of you doing donuts on that Segway got me :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL: .
It s amazing that you guys did so well on them without any coaching, but I agree that the hardest part is getting off because one usually keeps hold of the handle bar in so doing and That jsut sends these Segways into circles. (I did it too).
