Buried in an article posted Monday at JimHillMedia.com is this little nugget of info:
"...the Walt Disney Company wants to officially unveil this portion of the "Living Seas" redo as part of its announcement that the corporation has forged a new distribution agreement with Pixar Animation Studios (Look for Disney & Pixar to hold a joint news conference announcing this development over the next week to 10 days). "
So how's that sound?
Anyone care to share their thoughts on the type of deal they would like to see between Disney and Pixar?
One of my main concerns has been Pixar's desire to re-claim full rights to ALL of the characters developed under the current deal. Right now, I believe Disney owns the characters and can decide how/when/where to use them, while the royalties are split 50/50. In some of the past negotiations, Pixar was asking that those rights be turned-over to them, meaning that Disney would not only have to ask permission for something as simple as a Buzz Lightyear meet and greet at the theme parks, but also make payments to Pixar every time that he appeared.
I think it's a given that "Cars" will be rolled into the financial terms of a new deal. I also think that Pixar WILL get full ownership of characters from this point forward (probably including those from "Cars"), and that the new deal will be a lot less lucrative for The Mouse. But I hope Disney doesn't let them touch the old characters.
There were also rumblings that Pixar was amenable to letting Disney develop it's own sequels to "Toy Story" and many of the other existing Pixar films. I hope this comes about, too. I'd hate to see Disney tear-down another animation division just because they re-up with Pixar. Hopefully they'll get some good people on their side developing new animated classics--perhaps even with some guidance from the folks at Pixar.
