First, hopefully, I hope you gave the name of a current member as a referee so they can get the perk.
Second, as a member, if you refer someone in the future, you do get a $200.00 credit which can be taken as Disney Dollars, credit towards MF's, gifted to various charities or simply signed over to me. The perk amount also escalates with subsequent referals during the same year.
DVC does not send any gifts for joining, however, when you check in on your first official points trip, they will show you the secret handshake.

No, you don't get the credit, your friend does. Just tell him he owes you a dinner next time your both in WDW together.

You will probably get a tote bag of some sort in the mail with your paperwork.
You may also want to consider the big picture. Will Mariott give you up to $125 off of the price of a Walt Disney World Annual Pass? Will they provide you with perks like the DVC golf membership, discounts at Disney restaurants, discounts on Disney tours and merchandise?
Should i hold out for any incentives?
You should already be receiving a discount off of the base price of $101 per point. That's the only incentive you will get from DVC.

As Viking said there are incentives for current members who refer a new member. The point of the incentive is that the prospective member is likely to be an easier "sell" to DVC. The friend who acted as a referral typically answers many of the propsective member's questions and added a real-life perspective on the program.
In other words, if you buy, your friend is being rewarded for taking the time to introduce you to the program.
Note that there are residency limits on the referral program. Only members who reside in the following US states are eligible to receive a reward: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
US states not on that list have laws prohibiting their residents from receiving any financial benefit tied to a timeshare purchase. Therefore DVC is unable to reward residents of those states for referrals.
Hope that helps.

It's the pitts that Texas is not on the list. We have friends going to the World in April that are going to be looking and we can't get any Mickey Money.
