How much is the discount for a cash reservation at a DVC resort? We are going in May, and I don't really feel like messing with the AP "Best Rate" program just for one night.

25% off rack rate. I do not know if it's always available, though. I believe you have to check with MS.

Yep, it's 25% when it's available. You should be OK in May for most dates. Weekends are the easiest to get using the discount.

It's not always available only becasue DVC needs to be reasonably sure that the room won't be needed for a points reservation. Once they are confident it might sit empty, it's available with the discount.

I'd reserve the cash night thru MS even if the discount isn't available right away- they will apply the discount when it does open up.

When you book with MS, you do not need a deposit. When you check in your credit card will be charged. Dont forget even though you get 25% discount you still have to pay the 11% tax. If you have a AP you maybe better getting a better discount with the AP. I am sure you will have to pay for the first night plus tax.

The one disadvantage to using an AP discount is that there is no GUARANTEE of staying in the same room. If you book the 25% discount through MS, they can link together both DVC reservations (points and cash), and promise that you won't have to switch rooms. With the AP reservation, they will always be separate bookings and there is an outside chance that you will have to switch between stays.

I know that you absolutely have to check-in twice when using the AP/DVC combo--even if you keep the same room. Not sure if you have to do this with the DVC discount.

That's right - if booked thru MS ( with or without the DVC discount), cash nites will be linked with point reservations and you won't need to check in again and can keep the same room (as long as the same room type is booked). If booked thru CRO (with or without AP discount) you will have to check in for each reservation and you may need to change rooms.
