Wow, I am impressed by the wealth of information available at MouseOwners. I have been to Disney ~10 times both before kids and now with kids (ages 8 and 5.) I will be going back home in April and was considering renting an off-site condo or town house. Now I am considering renting points for the same price because there is nothing like staying on-property at Disney.

Hope I can contribute to the continued success of this site.

Hello,

Just joined this morning and considering DVC ownership.

I saw this promotion on mousesavers and was wondering
if anybody could provide a referral name I'd really appreciate it.

Currently DVC is running a promotion that gives you
$15 per point off the cost of purchasing at least 150
points at Saratoga Springs Resort, if you are referred
by an existing member. This makes the price $86 per
point instead of the regular $101 per point. You would
save $2250 on a 150 point purchase! Offer ends
1/20/07.

Also are there any other promotions going on for purchasing through Disney? We are trying to decide b/t Disney and a resale.

thanks,
Samantha

Samantha,

Welcome!

The offer you quoted is the best deal going on DVC right now. In fact, it's the best price they've offered in a year and if past history is any indication, it's not a price that will be repeated. After Saturday prices are almost certain to go up at least $5 per point, and there's an additional $3 per point price increase that is definitely coming on March 5th.

I'll PM you my information if you decide to buy and need a referral.

If you can't pull the trigger by Saturday, resale is a viable option. Right now, I don't think resale can compete with DVC's $86 price. If you look at the resale websites, their SSR contracts all start around that same price. Many are stripped of points (don't have any coming for several months or a year), and the closing costs are about double DVC's fees on most resales.

After Saturday, resale prices are likely to be a couple dollars better than DVC.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Tim

One other question - does it make sense to buy now at one resort say SSR than add on points like 25 (resale) or 50 (Disney) at another resort. I know they are subject to availibility.

So for instance we buy 175 pts. at SSR then a year from now buy 50 at VWL or BCR or even HHL/Vero. My questions are:

1 - will we have 11 month priviledge at both resorts?
2- can we combine the pts. to use 225 at one resort in a year?

thanks for the help!

Just to clarify, you can buy any amount of additional points from DVC with 25 being the minimum. Here is the fine print:

If you add 25 - 49 points you must pay cash for the points and you won't get any discounts. For SSR the base price is $101 right now. At VWL, BCV and BWV it's $95 per point. OKW, HHI and Vero are a little cheaper.

If you add 50 or more, you can finance and you MAY get a discount. Right now add-ons of 50-114 points get a $10 discount at SSR. No discounts at the others.

Under the current $15 discount offer, current owners must add at least 115 points at SSR to get the $86 price.

Hope that makes sense.

So for instance we buy 175 pts. at SSR then a year from now buy 50 at VWL or BCR or even HHL/Vero. My questions are:

1 - will we have 11 month priviledge at both resorts?

You will get the 11-month advantage just for the number of points you own at the resort. Both contracts would be tracked separately.

What you CAN do is bank and borrow the small contract to give yourself the advantage every 2 or 3 years. In your example, if you add 50 at VWL, you could bank the VWL points in 2007, and then in your 2008 Use Year use the 2007 (banked), 2008 and 2009 (borrowed) points to give you 150 for a single reservation at 11 months.

If you plan to hop among the resorts over time, I think this is a smart approach to take. You can save your 11-month points for a period when you know it may be more difficult to get a room at the resort at 7 months.

2- can we combine the pts. to use 225 at one resort in a year?

Yes, but you can only do that at 7 months.

It is my understanding that the point values for rooms with never change. If that is the case then why do the publish 2006/2007/2008/etc. point charts.

thanks again,
Samantha

Your understanding is correct...for the most part.

The things that DO change are the dates of Thanksgiving and Easter each year. Thanksgiving Day, the day before and day after will always be Magic Season, regardless of where they fall on the calendar. Also, the week before and week after Easter will always be Premier Season.

As far as points changing, it is within DVC's right to reorganize the point charts if they feel that demand patterns necessitate such a change. What cannot change is the overall total points at the resort.

For instance, let's say DVC decided that demand for December 1-14 is now too high. They could take Dec 1-14 and move it into Choice Season. That would raise the number of points required to stay during those dates in December. However, to balance things they would effectively have to move the same number of dates from Choice to Adventure season.

In its 15-year history, DVC has only altered the point charts once. That was back around 1996 when they re-balanced the points between weekdays and weekends. Will it happen again? If I was a betting man I would guess that they will make some alteration to the point charts in the next 40+ years, but it's not anything I lie awake at night worrying about.
