*whistling innocently* ;)
I am sure I don't know WHAT you are talking about. :p
I am in a weird place - not wanting to start much new...working on the new accounting program that mostly will go into effect 1/1/06...keeping the inbox cleaned out...all because of Maternity Leave soon! *doing the dance*
BUTTTTTT - I will admit that I am a lurker. I keep this place open a lot of the time and then I can check when I am on hold or just need a number crunching break.
Also - no bosses this week! (and since my office is in with my 3 individual real estate guy offices - that means no one is here! *woot* The majority of my work I do for the company "next door" but its so nice to have peace and quiet!!!)

When not in rhyming mode it seems
in overload I plan and scheme
To keep my house safe from the Beast
(Who is not nice, to say the least.)
A job I need, tis probably so
But overwhelmed I am ya know
With legal stuff and no recourse
I hate no-win-land of divorce.
So coming here, gives me some peace
From poison onslaughts of the Beast.
A closet space to laugh and cry
and have some fun before I die.
This isnt' meant to sound so bad.
I'm really happier than sad.
A job would just get in the way
Of posting here a poem-a-day!

Yes...I have a job...for now that is.
We'll be having some layoffs at the end of November... :(
Don't worry about me, I've been here long enough that I would get a 20 week package... :)

ack! At least that is a semi-nice silver lining (ok - 20 weeks is VERY nice...but you get my point).
I will keep my fingers crossed that you don't get hit with the layoff stick Cruise!

I was off today so that's why I was here. As for work, I'm job hunting and the sooner I can get out of this god awful hell hole, the better.

My post count would be a lot higher if I didn't have this dang job :p
I am proud to report that I hopped on at lunchtime for a bit and probably contributed to that high of eleven :D
I actually work tomorrow (Sat) at 8 am. I'll get the last laugh though when on Monday all you schleps are working and I'm' playing 36 holes. :D

You will definitely be laughing at me, Rash! I get to work tomorrow at a subdivision all afternoon and then I get to be back bright and early on Monday at work, well maybe not bright or early

There's a witty retort in there somewhere - I'm just not sharp enough this morning to find it.

Being that it was my birthday and the neighbors felt the need to have a little get together, it's more like a Seagramsover.

Well, I finally made it over here, and saw this thread. I am retired from the police department, and am about to start one of my dream retirement jobs.
Starting Oct 2, I will be doing a two-month stint as a National Park Service Ranger at Everglades National Park. I've worked there as a volunteer for five years, and they asked me to fill in for a couple of months due to a promotion. So, instead of "interpreting" the Everglades for nothing, I'll be doing it for next to nothing. But that's fine with me, and I'm really looking forward to the experience....one of those things I've always wanted to do.

Watch out for those alligators...they are NOT animatronic, ya know! :D

Jim that sounds fantastic!!!
I would love to be able to do something like that at some point! I am glad you are able "fill in".
My grandmother worked for a state park here in Georgia for YEARS and loved it. Even kept working part time for them after she retired from the state. It was always fun to go and see her and see her interacting with the visitors.
I am envious of such a beautiful place to work!

Watch out for those alligators...they are NOT animatronic, ya know! :DI know you're joking, but that is actually the #2 most commonly-asked question we get -- just behind, "Where are the restrooms?"
You'd be amazed how many people have walked right up to large alligators thinking they were statues. We have an 11-footer who likes to sun right next to our Visitor Center, and a number of people have nearly sat on him thinking he was a bench!
Park visitors will never let you down.

My d was only about 6 when we went to the Everglades.
And walking along the 'deck' trails with the gators sunning on either side, made me verrrrrrry nervous!
They really do look animatronic to me...but I couldnt' believe how many people were out there with their kids in STROLLERS! Yikes!
Are there ever any, ahhhhh, bites from people getting too close?
And I'l love a photo of someone using a big ole gator as a bench, or even a foot (loose) stool!
We only spent the night, but I REALLY loved the park.

Jim...Glad you're here. Not that I look forward to your hurricane updates....basically because if have to update, that means that there is one and that's not good :( ....but if you could post them on these boards, that would be appreciated.
Good luck in your new "career". Will you be offering free airboat rides if we want to take a Disney break? ;)

We're almost out of the Atlantic spawning season, and once the activity shifts to the Gulf, we shouldn't have many problems in Florida. Hopefully the Gulf will be a lot quieter than the Atlantic has been, but it doesn't look like it.
Good luck in your new "career". Will you be offering free airboat rides if we want to take a Disney break? ;)Naw. We don't have airboat rides in the Park. I go sometimes with our backcountry law enforcement rangers, and I think I'm going to go with the Miccosukee Tribal Police (I might even get my operator certification with them for emergencies), but regular visitors are not allowed to airboat in the park. There are a number of commercial airboat operations just outside the park though.
If anyone comes down to Shark Valley, I can see what I can do as far as the entry fee, though.

Are there ever any, ahhhhh, bites from people getting too close? Our researchers get nipped all the time, but they're counting eggs, measuring newborns, etc, and Mama Gators give new meaning to the word "grumpy."
In the history of the park (since 1947), we've only had two visitors injured by alligators. One was a 9 year old boy about 10 years ago who lost control of his bicycle and fell into a canal on top of a sleeping alligator. He was badly injured, but fully recovered.
The other was a drunk in one of our campgrounds, who picked up a 4-foot juvenile and went from campsite to campsite dazzling everybody with his maturity and judgement. The alligator eventually got bored with it and began munching on the moron's arm. Natural selection at work, I figure.
Hard to fault either alligator on those incidents. We have situations all the time where we have to "modify behavior," which is not something the alligators enjoy, but they've never done any worse than hiss.
The most aggressive thing I've seen directed toward humans was a female who bluff-charged a tram I was conducting. She had babies, and was apparently in the middle of a mood swing as we drove by, and she got pretty grumpy. But she was never within 20 feet of any of the people; she was just PO'd at the noisy tram, I think.

Jim - Very cool! I figured you worked at the park when you spoke of showing your daughter the gators, but couldn't figure out how the whole police thing fit in. At least next to nothing is more than nothing.

The Gainesville Sun had a blurb about a gator stealing someone's picnic lunch on the UF campus last week. Apparently, gators like spicy chicken!
