View Full Version : Anyone else frustrated w/weight?

I am so annoyed. As I'm sure most of you know by now, I was heavy my whole life and lost 75 pounds on WW. I have been lifetime @ WW for about a year and a half now. I'm sure most of you know I quit smoking, too. That hasn't gone as well as I'd like it. For a while, I'd quit then start again, back and forth. I think I've finally got a handle on it. But in my quest to not smoke any more, I gained 15 pounds in the process:burningma . I've worked way too hard to loose weight to see the pounds creep back. So for the past 2 weeks, I've been a good little WW member, written all the foods done, stayed w/in my alloted points, worked out about 45 min a day. When I did go over my points, I worked out to work off the points, I went over. I did everything right. I even feel like a look a little better already. So this morning I get on the scale, figuring a 3 pound loss sounds reasonable. And lo and behold, I gained a pound???????:burningma Ughhhh. I can't afford another pound. I've worked so hard the past few weeks. I don't get it.
Thanks for letting me vent.
OK, my advice is to NOT PANIC! Seriously!
Fifteen lb. weight gain is normal after quitting smoking. It doesn't mean you're going to gain 75 lbs. You gained 15. You want the 15 off? Start smoking again. :goodnevil This is a smoking-related sidelight, not that you've failed in your weight loss.
I think it is great that you've returned to doing WW by the book, so to speak. But, I wouldn't push for the results. They will come. Also, if you are working out consistently, things may be all rearranging themselves on you.
In my case, I'm about 10 - 15 lbs over my "normal" weight. But, that's way better than the 30 lbs. I was over a couple years ago. I started running in Feb. From then to Sept. 30, when I got injured, I lost exactly 2 lbs. Yet, folks were commenting on how my body was so different. And clothes fit that hadn't previously. But it was just 2 lbs.
I know it is hard not to pay too much attention to the scale, but maybe you want to add in "The Tape" too, to give you a more complete picture of how you are doing. And btw, you look fabulous! :cool2:

Mr Roz put on 20 lbs when he quit smoking, and to be quite honest with you, has never lost it. He NEVER tried though to lose it. I firmly believe that being 20lbs overweight is much healthier than smoking everyday. JMHO though. Smoking is a oral fixation, and some people have found success with doing oral fixating, chewing etc.
I agree with nono, you look great to me! :highfive:
After the holidays, I'll start my traditional I feel fat and disgusting thread and I'll diet for 2 weeks. I really really admire you for what you've done with WW. You are a very disciplined person to have accomplished all that you have. Hang in there girlfriend! :sunny:

Do less cardio & more weight training - low reps, high weight - and stay off the scale.

You've gotten good advice.
Here are some repeats from above and a littel new info for you:
1. If you do cardio above 80% max heart rate, you are not burnign fat as efficiiently. More is not necessarily better here. Aim for 60 to 80%
2. Muscle weighs mroe than fat, adding excersise could be helping you drop mass, while adding weight. Nono's tape measure is the best way to check that.
3. Hang in there! One month is just not enough. Go at LEAST 2 and see how it goes.
4. My weight can vary 3 to 5 pounds over a month. You may have actually lost, but are at a higher time of month.
Whther or not the scale shows it, you are gettignhealthier. Yay for you!!! :woohoo: Now you just need to hang in there. (Much easier said than done)
I've been meaning to as if you were still smokeless. :clappingh :clappingh

I am trying not panic, and stay calm. It's just sressful. And, no, I will not return to smoking this time:blech:
And I am going to try to stay off the scale, at least for a few days:hahahaha:

Athenna, sometimes it can be as simple as too much sodium over the weekend! That is what usually does it to me. Try to up the water intake. I read that we should take in half of our bodyweight in fluids everyday. For example, if you weigh 150, you should drink 75 ounces daily and as much of that as possible should be water!

Wouldn't that be 75 pounds of water ?
No wonder the line in a ladies restroom is always so long.

That does make a lot of sense. The night before I got on the scale I had popcorn. Fat free, but still has plenty of sodium. That was dumb of me, I should know better.:sosad: And I am trying to up the water, I think I have done a pretty good job of that lately.

I had higher sodium this weekend also even though I ate well. I weighed 1.5 pounds less today than yesterday! Keep at it, Athenna! You are smart to up your exercise because you burn 10% less calories per day as a non-smoker than before. The encouraging thing is that you can build more muscle and thereby begin burning more calories again :woohoo: not to mention, you will likely live longer and enjoy many more trips to the Mouse :slyasafox

No.... reread Lisa's post. She said to drink HALF your body weight, so if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 lbs of water, not 75 oz.
Also, a pint of feathers weighs less than a pint of oil which weighs less than a pint of water.
All pints are not created equal.

I am NOT blaming my weight gain and/or bad luck with trying to lose weight lately with anything,
However, this is sorta interesting (to me anyway)
I have been chewing this darn Nicorette for what seems like eternity because any time I had a relapse and started to smoke again, I'd have to start the whole process over. It takes very salty. It never dawned on me to read the box:confused: It says on the box, if you are on a sodium regulated diet (which I am not specifically) not to be on Nicorette. Hmmm, what does that tell you? Lots and lots of salt. That certainly doesn't help matters. Well, it's a good thing I've upped the water intake cause I don't know what else to do.
Just love who you are right now. It's a continuum. Would it be nice for me to be 10 lbs lighter? I suppose, but really, I have much better summer clothes that are 1 sized smaller than my current winter clothes. So, I'm content. :tilt:

Yes, Athenna, all the more reason to up the water intake! Just remember, that quitting smoking is so worthwhile that take your weight loss as it comes. Just be patient and it will come off. You will be so much healthier with the no cigs :grouphug: :jumpingbe

Well, this explains why I feel like I've been licking salt:yuck:
I did a little research on this Nicorette. There are more grams of sodium in 1 piece of Nicorette than the average person is supposed to have in a day. And I have been chewing at least 10 pieces a day. Ugh. Can you imagine how much salt in in my system? Gross.
So I think if I want to continue to not smoke & continue my weight program, I am going to start the patch instead.

Hi Athenna!
Couple of things after reading this thread:
There is a new drug called Chantix. It "fills up" the nicotine receptors, so you don't crave it. You start the drug slowly and decrease smoking slowly. My DH used it while he was getting thru the nicotine withdrawal and it helped him. He hasn't smoked since Dec 12th and no desire to.
After the nicotine, you just need to keep breaking all your old habits (lighting up when you get in the car, on the phone etc etc.)
And about the weight. Since I can't seem to stay off the scales, here is what I do. I start the week on a Sunday, weigh myself everyday at the same time and with the same clothes and write it down. The next Saturday, after the 7 days, I add them all up, divide by 7. Then I do it the next week. Then I just look at the difference between the two weeks.
This system factors in those days when you have retained water for what ever reason, and really enables you to see that you are ticking off a pound or two every week.
Hope this helps. Hang in there on both accounts. I quit smoking Nov 1990 and never looked back. I didn't gain weight until 4 years later........and by then I was in my 40's and the metabolism was changing anyway.......

I'm reviving this thread.
I never smoked.
I was always too skinny...didn't break 100 lbs until sophomore year college and only after I started drinking beer. (Imagine a goal of trying to break 100 lbs!!!!)
I'm not quite 5/7"...was 5'5" back then and before you think I was anorexic or anything...I ate ALL the time, very healthy mostly, but ALL the time. I was very athletic and always moving, but I never had to worry about weight.
I was 110 lbs when I married and the same when I got pregnant. But, then I started eating 'for two' (LOL, actually I just started eating what they said I needed to eat to make a healthy baby..I think I did start eating desserts tho, if I remember correctly). My then H was weird tho, and told me that I had promised NEVER to gain weight...and I guess he considered a baby 'gaining weight'. After I had the baby, I went on a stupid 500 cal diet and lost 60 lbs in 6 months...probably not the smartest thing I ever did in my life, considering I looked really good at 130lbs within 6 weeks of delivering a most perfect baby!
When I was 45 I started to gain weight. It seemed no matter what I did, it would not come off. And that includes working out 2 hours a day and not eating much of anything. I honestly think it had to do with then H's phobia. I took phen /fen in a very small dose (1/3rd the rec'd dosage) and that, along with asking H to leave made me lose an average of 5lb a week of FAT...honestly, muscles crept up all over the place..it was truly amazing. But 5 years later, weight started to creep up again. Scary, considering H's phobia (and how he treated me when I wasn't a size 6. Sigh. Phen/fen was off the market then, but as it turns out, the divorce diet is even faster than phen/fen!!!!! Not that I rec'd it!. So initially during and after my divorce, I was thin (but not 110lb thank god) and fit and very, very healthy, except emotionally of course...well ya can't have it all I guess.
But NOW is a real problem...I gained all teh weight back that I was way back when I was preggers..and without having a baby in there! And nothing seems to work in making that scale or tape measure go down. I went on the cabbage soup diet (which for me isn't at all problematic as I love this soup!) last week and cheated a little but still lost aobut 6 lbs of water weight. The thing is...even if its water weight, it still is a motivator in continuing to exercise. I should be using weights, but I'm not..I know that helps, but just couldn't force myself to go through that 2 hour a day regimen again...I think I'm 'fighting back' tho I'll be derned to know exactly who or what Im fighting.
So now that I've taken up a lot of space....my plan is to do this diet one more week starting tomorrow (you're only supposed to do it a week at a time, though with all the fruit and veggies on it, it really seems to be a 'nutritious' diet excetp for 2 days of steak along with veggies) and then I go to PV for 3 weeks and in PV I play lots of tennis and take lots of classes and generally use my muscles constantly. Of course there is those dang margaritas.
So here's the deal....all told this will be a month or thereabouts. My PLAN is to come home 10 lbs lighter than when I leave April 2 and that when I leave April 2 that I am 4 lbs less than I am today...meaning 20lbs GONE by April 23. No pills, no frills, no spills and sadly, no thrills:ROTFL:
THAT said, I'm off and running (to the store) to buy some cabbage, fruit and veggies. ( I thiink that the soup is somehow extremely diuretic. I notice that it helps too, by not letting you take 'even a little taste' of something. Maybe it is the 'little tastes' that get me in trouble normally. And I don't mind if it is just water weight (moon sign me) because at this point MENTALLY, weight is weight and I just don't want to carry it around anymore!!!!!
Taking my computer with me to PV, so I'll be certain to check in and let ya know my progress. Wish me luck!:tapedshut

As long as you are healthy with it, CB, I say great success to you  Cabbage, fruit and veggies are pretty healthy! I still am totally high on Sparkpeople.com!! I could not seem to take off any weight (exercised daily for four years straight!) until I started using the free tools at this site and keeping track of my calories. This way, I get to take tastes of anything I want as long as it fits into my daily range of 1200-1550 calories :jumpingbe I do still work out daily; I am preparing to walk/jog the half marathon next January!
I have lost 39 pounds since August 20, 2006 and I am pretty deliriously happy with that!! I may lose a few more but I am not worried if I don't:tilt:
I hope you have a blast in PV and be safe!!

Resistance weight training is the best way to go. You burn mega calories. I used to consume 5-6000 calories per day,but would barely gain a pound a month.
Weight training is also very important to prevent ostyoperosus (sp). Eating calcium helps very little as we age. Weight training causes the bones in our body to flex, which generates an electrical stymulus which prevents osty and keeps bone marrow vitial and red blood cell producing.
