I recently made my first DVC reservation our home resort SSR. The 7 month window is approaching and I'm wondering if I should attempt to get a room at the BCV. We have a 9 and 13 year old. One of my crazy thoughts is that for our first reservation we should go to our home resort, but maybe I'm being too weird about this. Any thought?

I honestly think that's a personal preference question. Personally, I thought I wouldn't be all that interested in SSR and stayed there only one night for our first DVC trip before moving to BWV. Boy did I regret that, because I really loved the place. Had I not visited there, or stayed there, I never would have noticed what I was missing.
Between the two, with kids your age, you'll have a grand time at either place. The kids will certainly love Stormalong Bay at BCV, but the SSR pool and recreation areas are nice, and the walk to DD will surely be appreciated by all.
One thought, though, is that since BCV is so hard to get into, go ahead and do it if you can. You never know if you'll be able to do it again!! As for ownership experience, no one at BCV is going to say, "Oh, you're an SSR owner. Why didn't you buy here instead?" They won't even know where your points are, and no one at SSR is going to say, "Ahh, yes, here's the Furlong Suite!!" They both say "Welcome Home!" and treat you accordingly. :)

You could decide where you want to stay based on a number of things, but your question reminded me of a comment that another more eliquent poster, Granny, stated one time. He thought you should stay at your home resort the first trip to have that very first DVC experience at your home and bond with it. That comment really made me think. And although it sounds corny, I think has some merit. Our home resort is
BCV and there are no better memories then our first trip... which happen to be at BCV. The two become entwined.
So, no I don't think your wierd. I think staying at SSR is a great idea, (but so is BCV!). That's the great thing about DVC. No pressure to make it perfect or do everything; you can do it next time!
Good luck with your choice.

That's a tough one. Some people buy, and years later they've stayed at many other resorts, but never their home resort. I usually favor staying first at the resort you bought at. However, BCV is my favorite. It's also very small, and often you won't be able to get ressies there unless you plan very far ahead. So I'd be tempted to try there; if you're lucky enough to get reservations, it may be one of your only chances to get BCV, but since SSR is so big, you'll have plenty of chance to stay there.

You got to decide for yourself, either place you will love it there.

I would go with your home resort.
that is the one you want to be your favorite. Staying the first time at any DVC resort is special - but staying at your home resort for your first trip. OH YEA!
you got 35 years to enjoy all the DVC resorts, 47 years to enjoy your home resort!
plenty of time to try them all.
