As inspired by Cobbler, here's our first exercise thread.
I was supposd to run about 45 minutes lat night, but turned back after 10. :( I have a hip issue at the moment and would rather be able to get my long run in tomorrow than hurt it any more.
For those that don't know, I am running my first marathon at Disney in January. I went from couch to 14 miles so far (been training since March).
Next?

I have gained at least 10 lbs since stopping smoking. I am feeling much better, but I still have coughing fits if I do too much.... so excerise for the moment is out. Sucks.
I will keep tabs on this thread for when I can work out... lol

Laura - You need time to get those lungs cleaned out from teh pneumonia. After that, though, you should start to feel better when exercising! I have so much resppect for you doing this and I know the worst side effect is the weight gain. Adding exercise when you can should help a lot. Just don't push it too soon!

I exercise in my mind everyday, every minute of the day , im running , doing sit ups, jumping jacks, tred mill, exercising bike..... does that count?

My excercise lately has consisted of packing boxes, lifting boxes, cleaning out my house to get it sellable. I miss ''real'' excercise, but you wouldn't believe the workout trying to move involves. Plus all my equipment I put into storage so my house isn't as cluttered.

I started taking spin to augment my running a few months ago. It really helps out with the cardio-vascular and my run times have gone down quite a bit. I even got up at 5:15 this morning to go spin and the instructor didn't show  so I wound up doing some free spin...kinda boring....and some eliptical.
If your hip hurts, don't push it. I ran a 5K after I hurt my hip and it was 2 more weeks before I started running again.
Now if I can only get my diet in check....darn those french fies, onion rings, pizza and tortilla chips..... :footopenm

I do TheFIRM workout videos. They are pretty tough workouts.
Today I am going to do complete body sculpting. I am going to use 8lbs for all my heavy work since I lifted heavy yesterday. If you lift heavy one day you should do a cardio the next or lift half the weight you normally would.
I am trying to get below 120 again. I got really lazy this summer and have creeped up.

I did teh FIRM absculpt last week. Hurt for days. My normal work outs are running and Curves for cross training.

I could probably lose all of Cobbler and still be a healthy woman *yikes*
I have put back on my pedometer for the moment and am shooting to make sure I do 10-15 thousand steps a day. Its a start and even when I do over the 15,000, I haven't felt sore or pulling in my incision, but do have a bit of aching inside, so not going to push just yet.
After the holidays (yes - I know - sounds like an excuse to put off exercising, but really, if I dont have time to go why spend the money) I am going to join Curves. There is one near my work so I can go and do the 30 minute cycle before going home or at lunch each day. I actually have lost an incredible amount of weight already but sadly have so much to go! I am just about back down to my lowest weight in the last 5 years though and that makes me feel GREAT! One day at a time!
Laura - hang in there hun! I am sure you are feeling bad from being sick so much more than from the smoking thing. I remember feeling better almost instantly after I quit, so just give your lungs time to heal from the pnuemonia and you will be good to go!
Carrie, I am really hoping to do the 1/2 next January AND to do the Avon 3 day (which is 60 miles over 3 days) in October of next year. If you will remember, it was my goal to do it this year, but I got PJ instead :) . What a trade off!
Cruise, how rough is spin class on your knees? I am getting the boys bikes for Christmas (ok - Santa is) and I think I will get myself one as well in the spring and ride some, but I remember bike riding to occasionally make my knees sore.

See last year March I was at my best 112lbs and a size 2. I highly doubt I will EVER get that small in weight again as I have built up some nice muscle.
However I just want to be below 120. I have "plumped" (according to my standards anyway) to about 126 and in a size 4 and they are getting a bit snug on me. I can still fit them but its snug, so this isn't a good thing.
Biggest problems are not exercising regularly like I did before and eating a bunch of crap. Not literally ;)

My DW and I have started a workout regimen at home we bought a rowing machine/statrionary bike I ride and row for about 1.5 hours a night after work every other night mind you I have not noticed my belly getting any smaller but my cardio capacity has improved greatly. We are doing this in hopes of completing the half marathon at Disney in 08 and also to get a little more healthy as I seem to have grown a little round in the centre of my body LOL. I was a whopping 175 when I met Lisa and I am now a whopping 228 which is quite large for me mind you some has to be attributed to a year of no woring out and little physical activity after having majour knee surgury a year ago August.

Spin is not bad on the knees...we're contemplating buying one for the home or getting a low end road bike and a trainer attachment. I would recommend trying a class or two and if you like it, get some bike shoes w/clips. Those really help.
DW & I are going to try for the 1/2 in '07. We procrastinated and my job situation kept us from the '06. If I progress enough, I may go for the full. :goofy:

We started in March and were really doing nothing, I had slacked off huge on Curves too. In a year, you can go for teh full. It's VERY time-consuming in the 20 weeks of training (if you follow Marathoning for Mortals), though. VERY time consuming. Yes, 2 of my December Saturdays will be taken up with an 18 miler and a 20 miler. 2 NOvember weekends were 14 and next week 16. After the 14, I did nothing the rest of teh day (except see CHicken Little). After the 16-miler, I have to go shopping with the female inlaws.
It really is becoming work now, but exciting too.

Wow, Carrie! I am so impressed! It was always a dream in the back of my head to be a marathoner someday. I used to regularly jog 3-4 miles 4 to 5 days a week in my early thirties. Then my knees really began acting up and I had the second DS and you know...I just trailed off to very little :(
About five years ago, I was diagnosed with Lupus and Fibro and it really knocked me for a loop. When I started feeling better and on meds, I was overweight with more joint pain as a result.
I began an exercise program in Dec 2002. I really stuck with it for health's sake even though it hasn't been able to undo all the weight gain from occasional steroid required meds. I am in pretty good shape from three years on a recumbent bicycle and situps and crunches and even "boy" pushups! My kids are proud of me :goodvibes I hold steady at size 12 for now but I am hoping my new treadmill might get me back to a size ten at least :fingerscr :wizard: It has cushioning in it and I have even done some short jogging intervals!!

Cobbler - everyone's "best" weight is different, so please dont think we are scoffing at you wanting to be 120. I think mostly we are jealous ;) :)
Wow Lisa - it sounds like you are doing great for yourself! I guess I figure there is a particular place where my body is best balanced and its probably somewhere about where you are. A size 12 is about as "thin" as I get and still can eat, so that is what I am striving for. More importantly is what you have - good health :)
Thanks for the info Cruise!

I'll be doing the half in January, but walking more than running. I'm hoping to work up to running it some day. I do intervals now...walk 3 minutes then run 2 minutes. Tomorrow is 8 miles! I've never done any kind of endurance running, so this is all new to me. I did play basketball in high school and track in middle school, but sprinting type stuff only.

That is so fantastic!! I can walk for a good distance, but I think I would have to speed up considerably not to be walking in the dark :holymoly: I've been doing: walk three minutes, jog 30 seconds  Hey, its a start :goodvibes
Laura, if you can make 15,000 steps a day, you will burn it all off, girl!!!! I wear a pedometer daily and if I didn't work out on purpose, my number of steps would just show how lazy I am. I'm so proud when I hit 10,000, usually only get 7,800 +-...

LIsa - We started with walk 4 min, run 1. Your knees may be able tohandle a walk run and the running can really help your pace so you do not get swept. Go for it! Or maybe try the half ofr 07.
Cobbler, yes we are all jealous. Even at my best I tend to feel like an Amazon, and my best (after school) was 9 years ago.
Just a question, where do we want this to go? DO we just want to talk about our goals? DO we want a daily or weekly check in to see how we're all doing? Other options?

As for me I didn't "workout" all weekend. But I did workout. I racked our yard and bagged up 4 more bags of leaves. I also helped move my moms small storage unit items into her large storage unit. Man she has a lot of stuff. I also put up my Christmas tree yesterday, did 7 loads of laundry, folded and put away, cleaned my house too.
WHEW. Didn't want to deal with putting up the tree after I got back from vacation so I put it up now.
I also did Body Sculpt today and only stopped 3 times. One time was because I felt queezy. I need to get something small to eat to finish the workout. I had mini wheats before but needed more so took a quick break to suck down a teaspoon of peanut butter. Another time just after the completion of the right leg in lower body to suck down some water and the last time was between the first and second set of leg presses on the left side. I couldn't finish the last 6 my heart rate was to high. NOt bad I think.
Thats all for me today.

I have never been part of an exercise group on the internet before, but I am game for some kind of check-in :)
I did seventy minutes on my treadmill Saturday and 55 min on Sunday. On Saturday, I actually did walk 4, jog one min (made me smile when I read your post, Carrie :goodvibes ). Then, on Sunday, I did hills and walked only.
Today is my eat light day after the weekend so I worked out on my mini-trampoline for 40 mins and did ab work and leg work for 25 mins. I don't think I work out hard enough on the mini-tramp (it always seems too easy :headscrat )

Let's see, 3.4 miles tonight with walk 3 min/run 2 min intervals. My pace is stinky right now on these runs, but the long run on the weekends is still okay. Trying to stay under a 15 minute mile to beat the sweepers for the half! And I'm still hungry from all this exercise!

Athenna's right Laura. GIve yourself time. Slowly build up. You'll get there. You've got ove ra hyear to get in shape for the 07 half.
Athenna - I think packing is most definitely a workout.
Lisa - Way to go on the walk/run!
I had a small victory last night. My Monday runs are always my worst. Lately, the y have really been bad with my hip issues. Well, I had a better pace yesterday than Saturday. While you'd think 8 miles vs. just over 5 would make that a no-brainer, my pace is always worse during the week. So, I think that was a good sign and I'm on the road to recovery. Hip's not too bad today either.
Mel - Join the feeling of training for an *insert your favorite food here*-eating contest. Don't know what it is about those durign the week runs, but I'm so with you on it! But think, teh race will be on the weekend and it will be long. So, if that's whe we do best, life should be ok. It still gets me that I can run 14 miles and struggle so much with 60 minutes. :hammer:

Hrmm... well....
You folks have given me a little drive to get back on my health kick (you would think the tightening pants would do that).
About 7-8 years ago, I was pushing about 250 lbs.... Then when I decided to move away from home to go back to school, I started dieting a little and got down to 225 before I moved. About a year after that, I got into a big health kick.... dieting and exercising 3-4 times a week (free use of the gym at school). My best friend and I went all the time, it was great. Anyway, I dropped 60 more lbs to get to 165 (which was "too small" according to everyone), but I ended up balancing out around 175. That lasted up until about 2 years ago. Since then I have been slowly building the weight back up. My best friend moved away so that kinda killed the fun of going to the gym. Add to that a house to take care of, working full-time now, and school.
Anyway, after crossing that 200 lb mark again, I've decided it's time to start that kick again. I bought a treadmill so I can work out at home (even in the cold). And I'm going to start cutting back and trying to eat a little healthier. I won't be getting up to 8 miles like some of the folks on here, but I used to jog a few miles and would spend about 45 minutes on the stair climber.
Hopefully by the time I head back to WDW in March, I'll be able to fit back into my "little people" clothes. :goodvibes

Want to hear something sad? I'm running over 20 miles a weeka nd putting on the inches like crazy. I need to make healthier choices, but if I forget to bring snacks to work, I'm toast. I can't run on an empty stomach. SO, I'm off to the vending machine. I've gotten a little better lately, but I still can't believe I can't exercise this much and not eat whatever I want.
Did 45 minutes of h-e-double hockey sticks last night. Frozen snow on the sidewalk stinks, but at least it was snow in my face, not ice and not powered by monster winds. I did it and my hip even survived!!! We'll call that a victory. Spposed to cross-train tonight. Thinks that will be in the pool trying to keep up with my much younger SILs. The worst part will be keeping up with them while shopping after running 16 tomorrow. Yikes!
vascubaguy & DSNY FN- Let's both try to get into our little people clothes! I refuse to go up! I'd love to be there by my trip. Really wanted to wear a 2 pc suit to the pool (not that I reveal much) by then. That could be tough, though. Can we all get there by March?
mel - Whatever will you do? ;) Shall I send down my underarmor and 4 to 6 layers of sweatshirts? I'm just hoping tha thigh of 42 on Satyrday will melt the snow on teh bike path or this is going to be a looooong 50 days.
Lisa - You'd be surprised how esy you can getup to 8. You can safely increase your total weekly mileage 10% per week. Our plan usually increases either teh Saturday long run or the during the week time. You'll get there!
mickeyndvcfan - I've been at Curves for almost 2 years now. After my dad had very surprising by-pass surgery last year and he was in better shape than I, I decided something had to give. I love it, but have to be careful not to talk too much and forget that I'm exercizing. (Yes, surprising that I would do that) I do it for my cross-traing 2x's a week now.

Honestly, I don't know that they're truly a healthy snack. I think they have more calories than a regular Snickers bar. I get the protein ones that help me last through the run. They seem more substantial than a candy bar.

Lisa - muscle weighs more than fat is my motto, and it's tru, but I have not gained muscle in my stomach or my butt. :( I could nto zip up a pair of swim shorts this weekend that fit me this summer. Thought I'd go to the pool and soak my legs after my 16-miler. Yes, 16 miles and can't zip shorts up. Rather depressing.
I'm going to start entering my food in my palm again. That tends to help. I cannot let myself get hungry and run, though. Just won't work, low blood sugar. I will try to see if I can eat 100 to 200 calories less than I burn, though. (Palm tracks exercise too)
On teh birght side, we had a great day for our run and we did 16 miles. I was dead at the end, but felt better Sunday than I usually do after an extra long run. I picked up some snicers marathon bars Friday. I'll try one this after noon. Couldn't find protein bars at Sam's and no time to shop around, but the energy bars still had a good amount of protein.
Am I nuts for trying to start watching what I eat closely again Thanksgiving week??
Excuse me if I'm a little down, the shorts zipper really got me and it was a rough weekend anyway.

cobbler - At least you'll get a ton of walking in when you get to WDW. I think a nice long walk sounds perfectly understandable after your car ride too. Just sneak in alittle bit here and there. It's better than nothing.
DSNY FN - I'm not sure that was the best solution, especially if you're now too sore to work out the rest of the week! ;) I'm sore just thinking about that!
OK, I've had about 10 glasses of water/herbal caffeine free tea today. Have worn a path to the rest room, but I have not eaten quite so much. I have also logged my food and am looking ok with the amount of calories I have left for dinner. Let's hope I can now go for day 2!

Ah I am not to sore to work out again my next workout is tomorrow night and I will be fine hey I played hockey for years I can deal with playing thorugh pain LOL. I have even gone so far as to cut off a cast from a broken wrist after 2 weeks so I could get back on the ice to play so a workout with sore legs will be nothing.

DSNY FN - I know many hockey players can go until they're much older, but I've found tha tI don't bounce back like I used to.
I ran my 50 minutes lst night. It was slow and my legs were not happy. I was bummed because I felt so much better SUnday and yesterday durign the day than I usually do after my long runs. Oh well, Curves tonight Wednesday off. Next run, Thursday morning.
As for eating, I did really well yesterday and had a good start today. The co-worker brought me muffin adn chai, as our diabetic branch manager is in WDW. (We try not to be bad influences on him, as he needs all the help he can get with his diet.) Just added to my palm. Darn those add up quick. :(
I'll just have to be good the rest of the day.

That has been the death of every diet/lifestyle change I have ever attempted lol I do so well or get a ton of exercise and then use food as a reward (talking about me personally but your comment made me think of it!). If I don't find a better "reward" system, I am never going to stick with the changes I HAVE to make to keep the weight going down and then keep it off!

Lisa - My SUnday run was supposed to be Saturday, but due to nowhere to run, but icey roads, it was post-poned. The long runs are usually in teh mornign, though. I get up and eat my pre-run breakfast of champios, which is now a SNickers Marathon bar instead of Pop Tarts and a Powerade. Thanks Mel fo rthe dietary change. After I finish, I get dh up and we go. If we are visiting somewhere or have other things going on, we start at 7 or 8. In the summer, we liked to be early, but it doesn't much matter now.
As for the mental thing, we will max at 20 miles, which is kind of scary. However, we've made every step in the program so far and the taper before the race should have our bodies ready. If it weren't for the darn hip setback, I'd be VERY confident. Our long runs are always better than our during the week runs, so that helps with teh confiedence. I'm scared, but pretty confident I can do it. I just wish my pace was in the 10:30s as it was before my hip issues instead of in the 12's as it is now. I need to remind myself of my goals, though.
1. Finish
2. Run the whole way
No note of pace in there and as long as I'm under 16 min pace, I'm ok. It's getting scarily close, though. An 18-miler, an 8-miler, a 20-miler and then taper. Yikes!

My pleasure...marathon bars are pretty cheap here at Walmart...box of 6 for $9. Pop Tarts and Powerade reminds me of the Baby Ruth and Pepsi I used to eat for breakfast in college :yuck:
Just under 4 miles in 55 min tonight, but my pace is slipping. I'm at 14 min/mile, so better than I thought I would be when I started training for this thing last Jan.
My goals for the half:
1. Finish
2. Finish without needing family to push me around in a wheelchair the rest of the day.
3. Finish without freezing to death before the race starts :)

I am thinking of you a lot and sending strength to you for this marathon. I'm sorry about your big run not being where you wanted it to be. I really cannot imagine doing an 18 mile run:faint:
It did feel good for you to say those things. I think the reason I responded the way I did was because sometimes I really feel like I go too far now with my workouts. Good point. If you want to see if you can increas, get in a steady, comfortable workout habit and then up your mileage by 10% one week. See how it goes. Supposedly you could do 10% every week, but in your case, I'd do it every few weeks. You do not want to push it too ohard in your case.
As for my 18-miler, I'd like to think it was the snow, slush and ice that just took too much out of me. I struggle btwn that thought and the "I'm just making excuses" thought. I won't really know until the 20-miler. I really need some clear roads for that one, though. The 5 to 7 inches predicted overnight are not conducivet o clear roads, but it's MI. WHo knows what will be here in 2 weeks.

I need major exercise! I weighed myself this morning and I gained 5 pounds! Ugh! I went from being so stressed I couldn't eat, to overeating while in WDW.
The fact that my friend that was travelling w/me wanted to take the bus instead of walking didn't help. She insisted we even take the bus to DTD! Why wait like 30 min for the bus to come when one of the points of SSR is that it is so close to DTD??? It was a 10 min walk at most. Should've left her at the bus stop and walked over myself. lol.
