Do guests staying in a room with a DVC member also get free DVD rentals? Do you just show your room key, or do you have to show your DVC membership card?

My educated guess woulds be "yes". I don't recall room keys being different.

When we "rented" movies at SSR last Christmas, they asked for our DVC card with our room key. I didn't have the card with me (I had gone over there specifically to get a movie and didn't take my wallet - silly me) and when I said I didn't have it on me, they just wrote down the number on my room key (and asked for the room number).
Not sure what the official policy is but I bet if your key says "DVC member" like they all do even if you are renting, you would get the perk in the past, but I think they are tightening up on perks.
Probaby a 50-50 shot on this one.

At HHI members rent for free just using the room key, but it says "DVC Members" on the key, so no need for the Membership card.
It's easy at HHI, but then again HHI is perfect and all other DVC resorts simply try to live up to its standards.

We've rented a few times at BCV and only had to show room key and give our room number.
Since the selection isn't that great most of the time, we usually bring from home now anyway. (Plus we have the portable DVD player with us from the plane ride so we have movies with us) I use one of those wallet type CD holders to bring about 10 different DVDs and it doesn't take up much room at all. We've even rented from Blockbuster before we went and brought them down too.

Anyone stayed at a DVC on a cash basis but still got the free rental? I am a DVC member but am staying on a cash paid room not points.

Portable Perks states:
VIDEO/DVD rental is free for Members at any Disney Vacation Club Resort. Note: Availability of VHS or DVD format varies by resort.
It doesn't say anything about if you're staying on points or cash. I would guess that as long as you can produce your DVC membership card you're OK.
