View Full Version : Gift from DVC in the mail!

DId anyone else just get a beautiful original DVC giclee print in the mail?
It was packaged so prettily that I didn't want to open it. I also rec'd a big DVC Vacation Planning book....
THis is the first time I ever rec'd anything from DVC since I bought resale.
Wonder if it came after our tour of SSR? Our guide was my guide (resale buyers are also assigned guides ya know) and he was really low key and non-pressuring.
We were actually paid for going..a.nd I am pretty sure this IS a first!

Ok..it's the 2007-8 vacation planner which is chock full of cut outs and scrape booking type thingies. The box the giclee print and planner came in is set up like a 15th anniversary 'cake'...don't forget to pull down on the pull down tab cause it is quite cute!
As a resale buyer, I never got the backpack or prints or whatever gift DVC was giving at the mo, but this is a real treat!!!!!!

There's a good sized thread on the DIS of posters who are starting to receive the print. New members...old members...resale buyers...direct buyers...it appears it's going out to everyone. Someone even mentioned that the enclosed materials stated there will be a way to buy additional copies on the member website, but it sounds like that info isn't up yet.
Start watching those mailboxes. :D

OH MY GOD!!!!!! :doublejum
We received ours in the mail today. After receiving the new DVD a couple of weeks ago I was really impressed. (I work in advertising and cool direct mail pieces are kind of my thing, I know its a problem) Anyway, This blew that to tiny little pieces. My wife's first comment was "now we know where the increase in dues is going" but like I said these things make me giddy. The print is beautiful and even comes with a certificate of Authenticity. I'm sure they will be on EBAY soon. I wonder how much they will go for?
If they went to these measures to celebrate the big 15 what else can they have planned. Maybe be I'm just getting my hopes up but seriously. After you look at this piece and realize that they probably printed at least a 100,000 of them you will feel the same way. I would say they still cost 5.00 to 10.00 each to make and that is conservative.
As you can tell I'm excited. Its almost been a year since we joined and if every year brings us this much excitement the money we invested was just a drop in the bucket and well worth every penny. I hope everyone else receives their's soon.

Ours came in the mail yesterday, too. Jim's first question also was, "So that's that going to do to our dues?" I told him to get into the birthday spirit. :birhdaypa
It really is creative marketing, and the planning guide had us dreaming of all kinds of ways to visit Disney next year.

Don't feel bad, Bryan. I actually have a binder to store things like old park maps (I pick up a set to keep during every trip), resort maps, DVC mailers, etc. And my vocation isn't even close to advertising. :)
As for the cost, even if it is being charged to our dues there are over 30 million points in the system now. If the production cost was really in the $1 mil range, when spread out over 30 mil points we're only paying pennies per point for the print.

I can't believe people are trying to sell them on eBay already. Given that EVERY DVC member is slated to receive one, there would seem to be a pretty limited market right now. IMO, if you're planning to sell yours, stick it in a closet for a few months and wait for some new folks to buy into DVC. They probably won't send them out past the initial mailing and demand will certainly rise.
Those of you who have receive them--how are they coming? FedEx or just USPS?
TIA

They are coming by USPS.
Sadly, I am not surprised that they are already ending up on Ebay. People will do anything for a buck and they won't be making much more than that for this.
Certainly, I think it is worth a lot more thanthat. However, if they did make 100,000 of these, that certainly does not make it a limited edition. ;)

Came home to see mine had arrived yesterday. I hate to sound like a party pooper, but I didn't like the painting. It is just too busy to display anywhere IMO. I have lots of WDW/DVC decorations in my house, some very colorful, but this one is just too too busy for me to hang.
Hope the rest of you feel differently, I was sort of disappointed. I liked the planner that came with it a lot more, much more interesting than past planners I have received.

Giclee is basically the fine art replacement for a lithograph. The original image is carefully scanned (and color corrected if necessary), then printed on a wide bed specialty printer, similar to an inkjet. The graphic can be printed on paper or canvas.
Here's a link that shows what the printer looks like.
Large Format Giclee Printer (http://www.digitalpainter.com/hardware.htm)
Since this process is relatively new, no one knows for certain how long a giclee will last. Will it stand the test of time, like a painting, or will it start to fade in 10 years?

Mine arrived with a scratch also. Not a really bad one but hey it was scratched. I emailed MS and was told if I shipped it back they would send me another one. This frustrated me since I had already thrown away the outside box. Also I didn't feel that I should have to pay shipping on something that was free. They mentioned that each member was only allowed to get one. Yet they are selling them on their website? Odd. I guess I will just keep it. I told them if they shipped me one with return postage paid I would send the other one back. If I didn't they have all my information they could bill me. Oh well I guess I will deal with the scratch. Kind of sad that when you invest lots of money they can't just send another one out without question.
Good luck with yours let us know if you are successful.

Aloha,
New member of the forum checking in. We received ours in Hawaii today via USPS in perfect condition (surprising for here).

We received ours yesterday and it also had a little scratch on it. I think we can live with it though.
Now I have to figure out (talk DW into) where to display it!?!?!?
Hey Ghost, Thanks for the explanation of giclee....now, how do you pronounce it???And I'm still looking for the mousepad.
J
I googled the pronunciation and found a very funny post that reports giclee is pronounced zhee-clay and is really just a snooty way of saying ink jet. Bascially it is the same process as ink jetting, though with much richer inks and can be on special materials, like the canvas-like material DVC used.

We received ours a few weeks ago and the corners had some of the print coming off. As it turns out it won't matter since the frame I got covers this up. It looks great!

Received mine today...was really surprised because everyone was saying that those who joined in the last couple of months wouldn't get one. My teenage kids are fighting over it!:santa:

We got ours yesterday. I, too, was surprised, 'cause I just asked MS about it when I was making a reservation last week, and I was told that we wouldn't be getting one.

Congrats. Glad to hear they are still sending them out.
DVC offered to sell members additional copies for $50 each, so I wonder how many extras they had printed. At that price, I doubt they were flying off the shelves. I know people mentioned only getting around $30 for them on eBay.
