That's about all I remeber after 6 years and what amounts ot a minor in German. Das ist aber schade.

Okay, I'm really not so sad that I'm staring out the window. I have three kids after all - there's really no "staring" time, but I do feel that way.
Alfred also has a book for the older beginner, and it's great for older kids (over 10 or 12) and really good for adults. It also incorporates some theory into the lessons, so it helps players figure out the basics of transposition and harmonizing melodies and stuff right from the beginning. It may be great for you.
My brother is taking theory at college right now, and is always asking me questions. We were at my parents, and he asked me about the fifth chord in a minor key, and I said something like, "No, the dominant chord is almost always major because you raise the seventh in harmonic minor which is the most common form of minor. The fifth would only be minor if the mode were natural minor, and you don't hear that as much in popular music" - and he was nodding, and this is very basic stuff, and my mom says to my dad, "Gee, isn't it nice when the kids really involve us in their conversations?" So now, my brother and I only discuss theory quietly, by ourselves, possibly sitting in a closet.
Speaking of the closet, what's in there today? I'm hungry.

How timely that this has come up. Charlie (almost 6) told me on the way to school this morning that he needs to start playing our piano. Not wants to learn...or wants to play...but NEEDS to. I would love to see if this was something he really wants to do without jumping into lessons immediately only to find out this need has something to do with building a Lego superstructure for his pirates. :blueflowe I can certainly stop by a music store and pick up a beginners book (lots of pictures would be even better) and see if he is interested at all or blows me off. I assume they both have "beginning" books appropriate for a 6 year old? Would you recommend one over the other Jnrrt?

No, they're both good. I personally teach out of the Alfred, I don't know why exactly. Like I said, I think it looks more enticing to a kid, and I personally like the songs a bit better. They are the same approach - the begin with notes just floating in the air so kids get an idea of how notes go up and down, but don't have to worry about reading a staff right away. They cover a few basic rhythms and then add the staff lines. Then they move them around in keys quickly and that way they get a better idea of the theory and aren't afraid of the black keys.
Do you play, Laura? I think you could do it together enough to find out if he's interested, but it's definitely easier if you know what you're doing a bit. And just a note, often kids don't learn terribly well from mom (I know mine don't) so it's probably best to guage his interest and then if it looks like a go, find him a teacher who likes these methods. BTW, 6 or 7 is the ideal age to start a boy. Girls can often start a little earlier because their fine motor is a bit better. And if you have a local university with a good music program, that can be a great source for a good and inexpensive teacher. Ask for a student who has finished a pedagogy class ideally, or at least is in music ed.
The Alfred books start either level 1, or split it into level 1A and 1B for younger students. He could probably just do level 1, but if you wanted to play it safe, get level 1A and skip a few songs if he's moving faster than that. It's always easier to skip a few songs than to not have enough to practice to get down a concept.
Okay, enough shop talk. Sorry, Carrie! But, let me know if I can help anymore Laura, and I'll try to do it quietly.:Pssst:

No. Aaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!
I don't know if I told you all why I'm in such a dither. When I got the proofs, the color on the disc was all wrong. It looked like that perpetually sharp crayon in your box, the one that look like the color of poo (and I don't mean the lovable bear): "burnt sienna". You all remember this color?
So of course, I told them, no no! (and I don't mean nono) that's not it! Please don't make me millions of copies in a color that no self-respecting kid will color with! And I think it'll be okay. But now I will have to maniacally rip apart the box and open one to make sure. And you know they are hermetically sealed so that if there were a nuclear event, the cd's would survive. So it's all just working against me. It's a plot, a plot, I tell you!

jnrrt--what horrible luck with the CDs! I hope that it gets worked out to your liking quick. I can't imagine having to open all of them up, it takes me at least 45 min. to open up a CD. Yeah CD covers and cockroaches, what will rule the earth after we get blown to smitherins.

If you do something truly embarrassing where you want no one to see you (like say "surfing" on your picnic table in the backyard) he will show up in a flash. Lets just say I know this one from experience. :jester:
I don't play so much as I mess J. I played instruments in my youth (some better than others...was a tenor sax player and actually made all state in high school) mostly woodwinds, but learned enough to play a few basic songs. I was not planning on teaching him myself, but do want to see if I can gauge his interest before hand.

I know Carrie. DH usually is the strong one, but even he had some weak moments, I have never seen him so upset when we left. Granted he wasen't death gripping Goofy, but still very depressed. (that was me death gripping Goofy...;) )
Our next trip is in May, so I can't really complain. I am out of points, and now officially in 07'. First time borrowing and it bites.
Good thing they don't have walk up add on booths in the WS, after a few Mooseheads and Strawberry Sparklers I would have signed my life away. DH's too.

Laura, I would have done a UPS dance to humiliate myself, but apparently I didn't need to. The UPS guy was already looking at me like I had three heads when he came up with an enormous dolly, said he'd have to make several trips from the truck, and then stared at me because I was maniacally ripping a box open. After I got it out, and saw that the color was NOT burnt sienna, I had to stop myself from hugging the man. He dropped the boxes and ran, I tell you!
Happy Valentine's Day!
And thanks for the cake! I don't care if I only lost one pound in the Valentine's Challenge - it's time to celebrate!

I don't care if I only lost one pound in the Valentine's Challenge - it's time to celebrate!
Hey at least you LOST one... pretty sure I GAINED TWO! :(
But hooray for the CD! I'll drink to that (coffee for now, at least! :ale: )
And hooray for Valentine's Day, too, though last night was MAYHEM. I had to go into town / mall area for something entirely unrelated to V-Day, and ran smack into the faces of the Mongolian (or at least, West Virginian) hordes. Seems everyone and their cousin stayed home this weekend and left their Valentine's Day shopping to the last second! I ran into my teenaged neighbor at the mall -- too funny, he was all embarrased to be (a) out shopping for a Valentine for his girlfriend and (b) doing so with his Mom and (c) now seen doing both by someone he knows (aka me!) Poor kid. I teased him and told him it was really sweet of him, but he didn't have to get something for Caroline, knowing he cared would be gift enough for her! (Caroline is our 5 yr old dd who has had a massive crush on him since she could say the word "Weg!" which is the best a 12 mos old can do with a name like Craig...) He of course laughed. I told DH about seeing Craig at the mall and commented on the fact that perhaps if he hadn't left his shopping o0t the last minute, he wouldn't have had to resort to his mom taking him. DH pointed out, "Well, at his age, it's safer that way." Huh? He explained, "After all, he had to wait until the last minute to make sure they would still be a couple by Valentine's Day." Ah the fleeting nature of young love ... and the frugality of my DH. Two of the great mysteries of my life.

Pass the coffee please....I'd like to dump some on DH's head! Yep, he forgot Valentine's Day again. :( Last night he and the kids made quick cards for me...only b/c DS reminded Daddy about it. I'm taking back all his Hersheys (about 5 lbs worth!) and books I got him LOL Oh and he said he would take me to a movie sometime....with the free tickets I have :tsktsk:
DS brightened my morning though! :beatinghe He came in this morning and gave me a big kiss with a Happy Valentine's Day Mommy all by himself. He made me a picture of a Kangaroo during free draw at school last week (don't know why exactly a Kangaroo but it was cute LOL) He also drew a pic of me and him on the cover of his card and a pic of Han Solo & Chewy inside...because he's a big SW fan and Han Solo is my fave character.
DD made a pretty "scribble" card and is going around giving everyone kisses, including the cats, the tv, the laundry etc....tried for the frog but thankfully he's in a glass tank! She is only 22 months and has watched way to many princess movies already so she has an excuse :ROTFL:
Hmmmm....maybe if I kiss the frog I'll get a Prince???

DH got me the "Mickey and Minnie" Vday dolls on his business trip earlier in the month, and I will get him a card. We actually don't make a big deal out of VDay, it is his second busiest day of the year, so it is a day that brings major stress, and he won't be home till very late tonight. I am making my yummy chicken tortilla soup for when he gets home.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!! MEN - do you see where this thread is going? DO NOT GO HOME EMPTYHANDED!!! Hubby and I agreed to just get each other cards this year. I bought the boys a Mr. Potatohead add-on set each and a card...just a card for P.J. I want to get her the Mickey to match her classic Minnie, but so far haven't found the one I want. Might just have to wait until we head to WDW in April :) She whispered to me she can wait and Richard has been sleeping with her Minnie anyway lol So he sleeps with her, brings her back in the morning for PJ to play with and then finds Minnie before bed. That child is so cute :)
Stimpy...I have been in your shoes many times. It is so easy to get angry and many times I have and you can convince yourself that he loves you so it shouldn't matter, but I would try to tell him (when you are calm) that it really hurts your feelings. REALLY hurts. Not little hurt. Not "I am over reacting" hurt. The kind of hurt that doesn't ever go away. I might not be a big thing that you would never get over, but it is a small one that really does add up into the big thing that you can't fix. This is definately a women and men are different thing. *hug*

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!:loveisint
Hope everyone has a great day, whether you celebrate V-day or not
Glad you're feeling better Laura. Thanks for the advice too. I'm actually not angry, more disappointed I think. This is at least the 4 Valentine's day he's done this, so I knew it was coming. And the few years before that, he would stop at 7-11 a get me a candy bar  (I learned a long time ago that if I want something in my Christmas stocking or Easter basket, I better get it myself!LOL)Every year he forgets, every year he says he feels guilty and we move on. I even had to give DS money before school for their flower sale so he could buy me flowers. :flowerfor I think I'm going to tell DH he owes me atleast $5!
This year while he was going through his usual, "I'm really sorry..blah...blah...blah..." I quickly changed the subject and bought up the DCL going to Europe next summer and how it would be so cool and so close to DLP and he's always promised we would go there. I don't think he felt THAT guilty for forget V-Day though :ROTFL: It was worth a try!

my big project today is working in our new "reading room". We had a extra room, and it was either going to be a nursery or a reading room. Guess which won? We allready had a office and guest bedroom. Okay, so the news here is more surgery for ds. I'm not so excited about this. Now he's having his adenoids (sp?) out. Since he's had 3 more ear infections even though he got tubes 4 months ago, they seem to think it will help.
I know it's no big deal, but I really, really, hate my baby having anaesthesia. Plus, they said the recovery for this one is a lot more yucky than tubes.
So, there it is. BTW, just got back from the post office where I mailed the first batch out. Let me know when you get them!

I understand and I didn't think you were angry. If it doesn't hurt your feelings then that is great as well. It hurt my feelings when hubby used to do that. So now I tell him, in advance...we are doing "x" for this holiday and spending "x" on each other....and he understands that no matter what, he better have a card or something there (and trust me, I am low maintenance - just remember the occasion and I am ok). In this crazy year of PJ coming, we both forgot our anniv for most of the day, so as I told hubby, he gets a freebie - oops...nope...too many forgotten things in the past so his freebie is gone! I am with Carrie - when you say sorry for the same thing year after year and can't SOMEHOW remember to do something about it, well...you aren't sorry. Not bashing your hubby or men in general but this one really bugs me. Lots of women say "well, they are just being men." but I don't believe in excusing behavior based on gender. Or, if I do - then I am going to turn 100% PMS all the time and say "well, I am just being a woman." and see how that works out. :p I don't want the boys treating their g/fs and wives like that, so I think its important for them to see their dad participating.
Wow Rozzie - I would LOVE a reading room! (of course, not giving up the nursery for a while though). You will have to post a picture when you are done!

Stimpy: what lllovell says rings so true. and also what Carrie said: sometimes guys are just unable to get these things right. BUT if it's done over and over...then that is a sing that their resentment is bigger than their desire to please you and give you what you need. And that smacks of the dread 'issues'/
Do let him know calmly and sweetly that it hurts when you let him know how much these little things mean and then he 'forgets'. Usually passive/aggressive behavior left over from when our men were boys. And lllovell is right: you don't want your boy children learning from their daddy to treat girls and women this way.
So guys who post here: listen up. Treat your women like the goddesses you want them to be...and they will be goddesses.

Howdy all! Dh and I are spending Valentines Day babysitting my girlfriends 3 daughters - ages 2,3, and 5. I'm so glad DH could come help! We ordered pizza, and I just got done doing baths for the 2 youngest. They're all watching Wallace and Grommet (they'd seen it before but wanted to watch it anyway). So we've got 5 kids at her house, waiting until they get to pass out mode to put them to bed.
Sadly - the parents are not out having a fun night. Her DH was sent to the ER and is in emergency surgery right now for what they think is a ruptured appendix. :jawdroppi He was supposed to deploy with my DH here very soon - but I doubt he'll be recovered in time to go now. He'll get to meet their son this way though! They are waiting on immigration to get their adopted son home from Ethiopia. He's about 4 months old. So cute!
Anyway - thought I'd pop in and kill some time!
DH said he was going to pick me up something on the way home for V-Day - but got sidetracked by coming here - so luckily my massage oils and backrub-thing from Bath and Body were more for me than him! We did get to go out for dinner and a movie Saturday - technically that was our V-Day celebration. I don't get too into it - it is sort of a Halmark holiday,,,,,
I'd better go make sure the munchkins are ok. They're awfully quiet!

We enjoyed a rare lunch together at my favorite restaurant yesterday, and used our Babysitter time, last night to go gift shopping for our extended families. We spent 3 hours in Border's and got great gifts for all. We never even made it into the mall. And we had cheesecake for desset. What fun we had, it was like being on an (early in the relationship) date again. We strolled through the aisles together, looked and talked about books, and had lots of fun!
Although my EXOSKELETON clicked and clacked as we moved about!
As an aside, I have the worst memory in the world, and I rarely pay attention to the actual date. So I have callenders on my computer, PDA and mobile phone, reminding me weeks in advance of important dates. If I can do it, any man can.

Mornin' all. Tired gopher here, had to leave the burrow at 6 am for an early conference call at work, plus kids have check-ups at doc today, so that means leaving work early, too. Yawn. That coffee never did kick in.
Yesterday was bizzarro. I absolutely cannot handle folks with zero planning. I went to dd's kindergarten class and found out the party was at lunch (news to me - and 99% of the parents, who showed up at 1:45 only to find the party's over!) I was there at lunch anyway, so I stayed to help, and OYE VEY - did they ever need it. The "craft" person for this party elected to do a project involving Elmer's Glue and those foamie things - folks, there ought to be a LAW against that. There were puddles of Elmer's 6 inches vast, 1" deep at every table, and foamies drowning in the white puddles of goo, with 22 disgruntled kids all calling out in unison, "HELP!" :help: Furthermore, they were making pins - so you can only imagine (a) the number of kids who stuck themselves, and (b) the number of kids upset when the foamie thingy fell right off the pin (and the amount of glue on their shirts because they simply added more wet glue, and slapped the thing back on themselves.... over and over again!) The pin was supposed to be a hand doing the "I love you" symbol in sign language, which involved folding 2 fingers down (and glueing them down - which DID NOT WORK. Elmer's glue has to BREATHE to dry - non-porous foamies take forever, and then can be readily peeled apart using this type adhesive. I could go into the chemistry on that - but I'll spare ya! ) Anyway - the fingers kept popping up - sometimes in less than Christian gestures, might I add :jawdroppi - and the kids were trying to mash them back down like a game of whac-a-mole. Pretty sad. :(
Anyhooo - dd overcame that and was thrilled when the 5 yr old boy down the street brought her a Valentine, candy and a small stuffed bear that afternoon - too cute. That girl is gonna be trouble when she hits dating age - already the boys are trying to win her over! DH, ever practical, brought me a fountain for our foyer (I had been eyeing them at a home show recently) and we got Outback take-out for dinner.... I hate the craziness of local restaurants around here on a dine-out holiday (V-Day, mothers' day, etc), and it was nice to eat at home, actually, as crazy-busy as we've been lately. And nothing says I Love You more than running water and a slab o' beef, right? (Don't answer that, LOL!) Went to our son's basketball game later that night, then had Boston Cream Pie (the family fave of desserts) - yum. Hey AFMom, which scent of Bath/Body stuff did you get? I got the "Calming" one (lavender, orange and vanilla) in the massage butter for DH - not too bad. Some of those oils just seem too heavy - the butter wasn't too bad. But did you get the wooden massage thingy? I couldn't figure that thing out, LOL, so I had gotten the red plastic one - seemed more intuitive. THe wooden one that was sold in some of the sets looked more like a set of brass knuckles for punching someone! Poor DH has been playing in a men's basketball league with some guys who played college ball - his age is catching up with him, and while he can't admit it, his muscles are protesting loudly! Plus he's had an extremely bad/busy week at work - didn't even get to eat lunch yesterday, too busy. He loves a back massage but will NOT get one from anyone but me. (Turned down my offer to get him a massage at SSR... said no way!) My hands can only do so much, so I suggested one of those electronic massagers - or maybe even a seat pad or whole chair from Sharper Image - then he and Mr. Buns could share it, LOL! ;)

:ROTFL: Gopher! Having been to DS's classroom for parties, I can picture the scene in my head perfectly! The mayhem! The noise! The glue everywhere!Everytime I leave one of those parties, I say a quick "God Bless that Teacher!!"(and an occasional...."What the heck was that class mother thinking??!!") I think every parent should be required to attend atleast 1 of these...you get a whole new appreciation for the teaching profession LOL

Ok, I unintentionally got my own Valentine's present last night. :( DH has been having a ball making fun of me about too!
The other day I mentioned I was trying Ebay for the first time for a stroller? Well, it became an obsession with me. I lost that auction but found another one. Got in a little bidding war with someone else 2 days ago. I just couldn't let it go! Realized at my last offer that I was now bidding the same amount for the stroller that I saw it go for in the store...and that was before shipping. :hammer: Smacked myself in the head a few times and told myself: the other person will outbid me, she was only "losing" by $1! Apparently, I was wrong! I won the stupid auction last night! :hammer:
Sooooo, this has stressed me out and I am so angry with myself! I'm one of the people that is generally ummm...thirfty? Ok, I admit it! I'm cheap! I hate paying full price for anything (This way I don't feel guilty paying for expensive things I really do want....like Disney trips LOL) I pride myself in looking for and finding bargains! Now I feel like an idiot. :(
DH, who is the exact opposite and usually pays more than he should, is not letting me live this down! I didn't sleep most of last night b/c I was so mad at myself and when I did I had nightmares about someone stealing this now very expensive stroller!
I won't even try to back out, I already sent my payment PayPal last night...using DH's credit card since he ticked me off so bad LOL Which also backfired, b/c now he's telling me "I'm sorry I didn't get you anything for Valentine's day....except for $100+ stroller!!" And then he laughs hysterically
I've now banned myself from Ebay, except for a Star Wars game DH wanted me to bid on!
SO, if anyone sees me on here...please make sure I'm not on Ebay too? Thanks!!
And if you see someone standing guard over and handcuffed to a Maclaren stroller in Disney, that would probably be me.

We all get caught up in auctions sometimes. I was at a real auction where I somehow got in a bidding war with someone and ended up with $20 worth of junk hewelry. Usually, I'm very sonservative. I make a max amount for myself berfore I start, etc... Happens to the best of us, so don't beat yourself up and don't let your dh do it either! Stepping off soap box now.

You people better get in there quick or else all you will see is two crazed eyes glairing over the top of the cake box..in about 30 seconds! That is my favorite cake!
Tony - I am glad you had a nice Valentine's day :) Strolling through a book store and CHEESECAKE!!! WWOOHHOOO sounds like heaven to me. Beleive me, I am terrible about dates, but since I work at a desk, I keep a calendar that is well marked up to keep me on track.
I bought the boys these Mr. Potato Head add ons for their VD presents (always get them something small) and they saw them before dinner and I thought they were going to come out of their skin trying to behave and eat and use good manners. :) They tried so hard! I am glad I was able to take the time to get them something. Then we made tatoes the rest of the night (myself included...but I had to alternate that with feeding PJ...although Mr. Potato Head parts are great sized for her too...they just return a bit slobbery). I made a mean Spud Trooper and Darth Tater! Charlie used the new pieces to make a Fireman and Richard used his new pieces to make an alien. Funny how such a simple toy can be so much fun somtimes!
Now...if I can get that child to stop growing..even after nursing twice and eating 1/2 a jar of squash and rice cereal, she still woke up TWICE last night to eat again. Can we say growth spurt?
Happpy Hump Day!

Hey lookie here...a whole other page of posts I need to reply to!
Gohperit - I am laughing here as I see this scene playing out, but I know it had to be total chaos. We get into those sorts of things here from time to time (Richard's birthday was that way a couple of weekends ago...so much so that I called the gym and said if Charlie's party will be like this in a month, cancel is NOW. The owner called and I think we got it worked out...but is was just CRAZY - fun crazy, but still not fun for me). You are the go go go lady!
Stimpy - I need to teach you the art of "sniping". NEVER EVER EVER bid on an ebay item unless 1. you are willing to pay a crazy amount of money then you put that max in and let it rip or 2. the item is about to go off sale. I mean really ABOUT to go. Like 1 minute or less left. You have you little box open...time it out...and BLAM but in your bid at the end (called sniping). It does two things. If you dont win, you dont have time to rethink your max bid which as you found out can get you into trouble. It also keeps the price from climbing over the course of the entire auction because even a $1 or $2 increase here and there can really add up. Sadly for EBAY sellers, it is becomming the norm, so you never know if your item will sell.
Oh and Stimpy...you just set the price for next years present....one point :p You go girl!

My truck is still in the shop. Mainly because DH and the shop manager (or whatever he's called) are arguing over whether it should be covered by the warranty or not. Joy. Good thing this happened before he deployed, because I wouldn't have had a clue what to argue about. I hate being so useless when it comes to mechanical things - but my talents lie elsewhere.

I feel like a stalker so I need to reply;) I read this post everyday, but don't say much! Stimpy- sorry about your DH and Valentines day. Here's my plan. A few days before the event, I make a real pest of myself. I just come right out and ask "What you gettin me for Valentine's Day, (my birthday, anniversary.....) That way there is no chance of him forgetting. This year we decided not to do anything but cards (my request). I couldn't really think of anything to get him. His Birthday is in 2 weeks and I'm still clueless about what to get him for that, so another gift giving occasion was just complicating things way too much for me. He did take me and the girls out for dinner so that was just fine (I hate to cook). Oh and just hang something really gross on the handles of your new stroller (a diaper in a bag with coke poured all over it) and nobody will touch your new stoller.
Gopherit: I can completely relate to the whole glue episode. We've done several "foamie" crafts this year in DD's Kindergarten class, but we used low melt hot glue guns. Thankfully the only child that has gotten burned was my own (under my supervision), I'm such a bad mother!:boohoohoo

I'm pretty sure that reading it from the beginning would be tantamount to doing a great big SOMETHING, and that is not allowed here. So I would advise the jumping right in strategy.
I just have to go on record as saying that I think the foamy thingies (that's the official title) are evil and we do not enjoy them here. And the Elmer's with it is simply ridiculous. They need to have a warning label.

Mornin' All!
Better, brighter day from the gopher hole, thank goodness. Got a lemon-cranberry muffin and large Cafe Mocha from Tim Horton's - not too shabby, I must say. :yummy: DS11 is doing a tad better after some quality time with Mom yesterday. He's really growing up, I tell ya - he's already figured out that some people in this world don't have his best interests at heart. He has such a BIG heart that I wondered if he would ever get that clue, and not wanting to jade him, I didn't know how to tell him this (as in, hey honey, that kid you call your friend could be a snake oil salesman and treats you and your other buddies like dirt!) Well, DS came to that conclusion on his own, and was lamenting to me the difficulties of being "friends" with someone who sometimes takes advantage of that friendship. Pretty tough lesson in life for an 11 yr old, but very important. I want my kid to try to find good in people and not hold grudges, but at the same time, no one wants to raise a human doormat, either. Until recently, this kid had "WELCOME" stamped all over him. My sweet Friday's Child (loving and giving) couldn't understand how anyone could intentionally "do him wrong". So I guess he would stew over it internally, and then let out those lovely feelings of pent-up anger/frustration at home on us. Poor kid, poor us!
But enough desk-chair psychologist!
AFMom, I agree - it's an Oriental Trading Company Plot! The staff of that company probably snicker with every order ("Hey, look! Here's an order for 25 St. Patrick's Day picture frame kits, each with 33 foamie pieces, some the size of a proton, and complete with directions that say... get THIS.... YOU CAN USE GLUE! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!") :goodnevil Sinister minds at work.... Let's steal their milk (and cream cheese) and send THEM a bucket of hot wings! (Actually, don't - the meanies aren't worthy! mornin':coffee1:
Speaking of bookstores, that is DH and I's favorite past time. We love going to Barnes & Noble to get coffee and read. We go about once a week, and it is not cheap entertainment, because one of us usually always finds something to buy. Soon as we walk into the door, we split up instantly, and he walks very fast, pushing all other 12 yr olds aside, to the SciFi/Star Wars section. I make my way to, well, everywhere. I love being able to flip through some books with no commitment to buy. Especially magazines. I save money actually by getting my PEOPLE fix there. I know gossip fancy magazine, but somehow, I can't live without it.
hey jnrrt, hope your little one starts feeling better soon. I know you will be so relieved when this phase in his little ears are all over with.

Just got back from the hearing screening, and they couldn't do it because both of his tubes are blocked. So that explains the problems, and I'm relaly happy they found it before the surgery, because now we're probably having both things done at the same time, but, Aaarrgh. I'm not liking this.
withdisneyspirit, thanks for the info about your son! That makes me feel a lot better. I hope mine has as much success this go around, and I'll take an easy recovery!
Gopherit, I'm glad you like the lyrics. I wrote that one originally for my friend's adoption shower, but I had just found out I was pregnant and hadn't told anyone yet. So it was for my babies too.

Oh, Jnrrt - surgery on little ones causes so much stress for Mom!!! My older DS partially apmutated his finger in a door when he was 3 - not pretty. The surgery scared the heck out of me - general anesthesia! But he sailed through it, the only problem we had after - he threw up in the car on the way home. SO take a bowl.
I also know the hearing testing woes your having. Younger DS had to have his hearing tested a few times - no problems showed up, we were concerned because of his speech. But the tests were really hard on a 2 year old! You have to wonder just how accurate it all is at that age.
Bookstores..... my private Nirvana. Used, new, paperback, hardbound..... oh and now there's a Starbucks there! :loveisint My DS's speech therapy is right next door to a Barnes and Nobles - twice a week!!!!! Luckily my kids love browsing as much as I do - we could spend hours there!!!!
Sadly - DH is not a book person. He'll get into them occasionally - but he never has any time to read anyway. Although - when he's deployed he goes through a lot of books! Not much to do in the desert in a tent. So I need to start shopping to ship him some.
Hey, to you men out there, what books are your favs? He's a Tom Clancy sort of reader......
Gpherit - I'm glad your DS finally talked to you, and worked it out a bit. I hope my DS and I can keep our lines of communication open. Funny how when they are little - we know everything. But when they start puberty - we don't know nothin' ! It sounds to me like I'll be coming to you for advice! You're handling it so well!
RweTHEREyet - I have heard of those! They are VERY nice. My Grandmother is in an assisted living facility in CA - I'm so glad that was an option. She really doens't need the "nursing Home" yet - and she really likes having her own apartment there.
Ok - time to suck down the coffee and get to work. Staring a Weather unit with the kids today........
Popping in quickly.... Hope all is well with everyone.
Gopher I've been thinking of you when the Chevy commerical comes on. DS rolls on the floor with laughter when that poor thing slips off the back hatch....
Need some book ideas Kristy? Does he read Len Deighton? Some of the greatest spy novels, a la Clancy, though more cold war then current.
If he's interested Deighton wrote a masterful series about a british spy names Bernard Sampson. There are actually nine Sampson books that, if you want, should be read in order. All are set in the cold war, in berlin and london primarily. In order there are three trilogies: Game, Set & March then Hook, Line & Sinker, then Faith, Hope and Chairty. If he really has tiome to kill also pick up a Deighton book called Winter which is related to these and can be read at any point, though I read it last and it helped. Winter is a family name that carries through the other nine books.
How about LeCarre? Also many brilliant stories from him.
Anyway, just 37 days till Hilton Head...

I needed that.
OK, can I whine? Have I ever stopped myself before?
Well, did my blood work last week. Now, when last tested aft dad's bypass, I had high triglyceries adn low blood sugra (only slightly for each). Kind of scared me as I know I'm headed for dad's diabetes and he never had high cholesterol, but had hig tri's. So, ok, I'm like dad, got to watch it.
So now, tri's were great. Blood sugar was normal. Cholesterol was high! :idontgeti Minus a trip to WDW and well, some visits to coldstone, I've been eaating healthier since November than I ever had in my life! Plus, darn it, I ran a marathon in January. Not like I slacked off for exercise. I'm, kind of bummed. Have to check it agin in 6 months. I know it's good to get a handle on early, but you're not supposed to have to worry about htis crap when you're in your 30s. Just don't get it. Oh, and my cholesterol would mirror my mom's. SHe eats well and exercises too. At 64 I understand, but not at 34. So, here's my life, no carb, no fat, no nothing if I start to follow both mom and dad's helath history. Looks like I'll be eatin' rabbit food for the rest of my life. :tearsaref

Hey Carrie,
Cholesterol is a lot more about heredity than lifestyle. Don't get me wrong, lifestyle is a big part of it, and it sounds like you're doing everything you can which is great, but don't beat yourself up if you can't get it all the way down to where you want that way. It's not always possible, especially if it's in your family.
My MIL has high cholesterol (and should) and my dh and both of his brothers are all on meds for it. Now with the rest of them, they don't eat so well. But my dh eats really well, and does not have an extra pound on him anywhere. He's the tall, thin type. He could probably get more exercise, but he's in good shape, and basically the dr. told him there is nothing more he could be doing - it's just a heredity thing and that's the way it is. He started meds when he was 30. His brothers were on them in their 20's. So although it stinks, sometimes you can't avoid it, and it's way better to get it under control by any means.

Hey nono- your sloganizer.net phrase (DVC - Yabba dabba Duh!) now has me thinking of that Christian music song with the cartoon characters singing hallelujah in their own way... (my son's group sang it a few yrs ago - very cute, but now I'm going to be thinking "Yabba-dabba-doo-yah" all day long, much, I'm sure, to the ponderment of the science geeks amongst whom I circulate....)
Ah what the hey - I love being an enigma :veryconfu (which is much better than being an enema, but let's not think about it.... Cowabungaloooooooo-yah, Dude.)

You can pretend you're at my house while you swim - it's downright warm today! Feels like spring has sprung here, I even have a daffodil popping up in the backyard! We went down to our neighborhood park today - beautiful day. Hardly a ripple on the bay, light breeze. I soooooo wish I didn't have to be in the house doing school and housework!
Well - spent the night at my friends house last night again, and spent all morning there as well. Kids and I got home and did a short school day, and now I'm frantically trying to get my house ready for a bbq tomorrow. I still don't know what I'm cooking, and DS has a b'day party to go to tomorrow morning that we don't have a present for and will take time out of my bbq prep.... My friends' DH isn't doing so hot. He has an abcess in his side - swelling, and his fever won't go down. So they are doing a CAT scan today to see what's going on in there. He has a weird heart valve thingy - and they are worried that the infection will go to his heart.... if it does he may never fly again. If he had only not been so stubborn and gone it before his appendix ruptured!!!!!
Luckily, for the wife - his parents are coming down today to take over with their kids and give her a break. So - send some prayers their way......
I feel like I should cancel the bbq so that I can be more available - but we canceled on them last weekend when DS and I were sick......

Guess what I've been listening to?
:tunes:
Yup - my CDs from a certain musical Mouseowner came in today! (jnrrt, you have a beautiful voice!)
Meanwhile, the lil' gophers are all watching Star Wars Episode VI (Return of Jedi) well, all except for dd5... she came in crying because she's afraid Luke's gonna kick the bucket. I told her no way Jose - he CAN'T die, and she KNOWs it. She wipes her tears and says, "How... sniffsniff... just how do I know it, Mommy?"
"Simple...." I say, "you know he doesn't die, because you've seen him on the Muppet Show, so you KNOW he must have survived!"
(And DH thought no good could come of my complete DVD collection of The Muppet SHow.... oh he of little faith.... Actually, the Star Wars muppet episode I am sure predates the SW Episode VI, but she doesn't need to know that, right? :slyasafox If you haven't seen it, by the way, the Star Wars muppet episode is TRULY a classic. And the ending is something only a Mouseowner could appreciate! Very funny, too, considering Disney later bought up the Muppets.)
Well, off to console dd (who is probably now justifiably fretting over Yoda, who I might add does NOT appear in the Muppet show!) :idontgeti

I realized a few days ago I made 2 bedroom status - It's almost scary - I post wayyyyyyyyyy to much!
OK - should I cry here - or start my "please pity me" thread? The countdown has really started. I'm having a hard time staying in denial, and there are large green bags on my living room floor waiting there..... ominously..... Really silly - but in case there are terrorists lurking on Mouseowners ( :crackedup ) I can't actually say what the date is on the internet. This is hilarious! My pilot DH is the same way!!!! He actually wears glasses on the sly. Whenever he goes for his flight medical, he is able to squint well enough to pass the eye test, so, thus far, it is not showing on his license:ROTFL: I got to tease mine too last weekend! If you haven't seen the Muppet SHow SW episode, Mark Hamill and C3PO and R2D2 visit the Muppet Show. Half the time, Mark Hamill is Mark Hamill, half the time, he's Luke Skywalker. FUnniest parts are when he's Skywalker and he tries to take over the Pigs in Space aircraft, the Swinetrek. Miss Piggy tries to play the part of Leia (and when Luke points out she's put on some pounds, she threatens to cut him in half :p ). ANd best of all, the confrontation with evil Dirt Nader (whose profile of course gives him away as Gonzo). When the crew lands on planet Koozbane, Dirt Nader emerges from a cave and seeing how very puny he is, Skywalker says, "THAT'S Dirt Nader?"
Captain Hogthrob just trembles and says, "YES! Isn't he just ICKY?"
(I still use that line sometimes when we watch the real Star Wars episodes!)
Anyhooo - they try to use their weapons, but Dirt has jammed them with his evil electronic device.
Luke: Then we must resort to our Ultimate Weapon!
Dirt: And hoity toity, WHAT pray tell is THAT?
Luke: Chewbakka the Wookie! (enter Chewy, making his usual noises and grabs little Dirt in a neck-hold and roughs him up a bit)
Luke: Ha! The jig is up! Nothing can stop good ol' Chewy!
Dirt: Well I know ONE thing that can!
Luke: Huh? What's that?
Dirt: Angus McGonagal, the Gargling Gargoyle Gurgler!
(enter Angus, gargling Gershwin, prompting Chewy to release Dirt and hold his head in pain)
LUke: (anguished) Oh NO! THis is TERRIBLE! Trapped by Dirt Nader, our weapons are useless, and NOW, we're being TORTURED by GARGLING GERSHWIN!! AUGH! What can POSSIBLY get us OUT of THIS?
(enter Kermit and cast)
Kermit: "What else - A Song and Dance number!"
The cast bursts into singing "You are my Lucky Star," during which Chewy and R2D2 dance, then C3PO does a Fred Astaire tap routine. THis leads into Hamill singing solo (as Hamill) "Fate is kind... she brings to those who love... the sweet fulfillment of their secret longings!" And the cast then all joins in to finish it off with, "When you wish upon a star." It's during this finale that a castle emerges in the backdrop and fireworks overhead (a real jab at Disney if ever there was one!) :fresh:
One of my kids' all-time favorite Muppet episode ever, and too funny given that now Muppets are a part of Disney.
(BTW - the Paul Simon episode that follows is another fave, but I'll spare ya!) ;)

My oldest DS is becoming quite the SW freak. What do we expect, we dragged him into the theater for Episode 1 when he was a couple months old. Yes, that was us with the baby in there. :innocent: He got the Legos Star Wars video game for Christmas so he has played out the entire story lines of Epi 1-3 as every character (animated out of Legos), over, and over, and over, AND OVER again. I think our next trip to plan will be a SWW.
On a side note I got to meet the real, ORIGINAL, Darth Vader way back when. My family owned a decorating store and Darth came to promote the Star Wars wallpaper. I was way cool because he came to our family's place. I even got his autograph!! :slyasafox
On the glasses issue... DW looks super sexy in her glasses. She has a pair of reading glasses that she occassionally wears. She has bad eyes, but won't admit it and go get checked. I've been pushing her to go for years. Not because she needs glasses, but because she looks HOT.

Yes AFM, I was always the fill in when playing SW growing up. Chewy's part was even taken, I always ended up playing a ewok.
we are having some of DH's managers over tonight over for dinner. (ad nauseum) I detest entertaining, means I have to actually clean, cook, and take the sweatpants off. I would have made a horrible politican's wife...
hey CB! cool! That must be so much fun.
and Carrie, I would be frustrated too, especially after running a marathon! A lot of this is inherited. Something that we just have learn to adjust with medication unfortunely. ("we" as the medical community) Pay attention to your HDLs. HDLs are your friends. Keep up the good work, you are doing everything right.

Rozzie, my hdl's are actually pretty good, so that's a good thing. I just totally flip-flopped on what was good and what was bad.
I did ID a big change. I added a protein shake to my diet (good), but it was made with whole milk (bad, don't get me started on dh's need for whole milk). So, I switched to soy milk for that. Hopefully,t hat will help.
Oh, I say SW (Episode IV, which is really I in my mind, just to confusing) at age 6. Seemed like I speant my whole childhood waiting for teh next one! ;)

I just want to thank you all in advance for putting up with me here. Starting very soon I won't be much fun! I agree that 3 months is a long time!!! But darn the military wives - they all have to act like it's no big deal. Yes - we've all done longer and are glad it's 3 months - but it's still 3 months!:(
Carrie - I've had high bad cholesterol since I was 24. I eat well, exercise a bit, everything - I'm just fighting my DNA. I haven't had the #'s checked in 7 years, though. It's called denial!
Anyway - friends DH is out of the hospital today! Yay! He has a yucky drainage tube coming out of his side, :hurl: and has to go to the dr to be checked all the time - but at least he's home.:blueflowe They are telling him he might be able to go a little late with the rest of the guys - but he won't be able to fly while he's out there.... I don't think he cares - just doesn't want to get left behind. We'll see how things go there.
DH pretty much has this week off, he's got the mega-honey-do-list! I wanted to go somewhere for a few days - but he poo-poo-ed that. We are going to go somewhere when he gets back, though.... gotta plan that one.
We were just getting ready to start math - but DH decided he needed slave labor :p - so the kids are out front unloading paving stones from the back of my truck.
CB - I'm so jealous. Snowboarding down your driveway!:jawdroppi I miss snow sooooooo much. I don't miss the shoveling part - but really - small price to pay for an actual winter! We were watching the snow falling in Torino last night - DH and both gave this heavy sigh at the same time - and then started to laugh. We are mountain people to the core. I do love the water, though - so I guess I'll live:p

Kristy! You need to get that checked again! :tsktsk: DO you miss the below zero temps with windchill that sometimes come with the snow? I like snow, unless I have to run in it, but below 20 degrees and I get cold!

I am such a warm weather mammal. Below 60 and I am snuggled up to the fireplace. I remember back in my running days that I used to enjoy the cold weather, but 30 degrees was my stopping point. I can't believe we sold our treadmill, just because I was too lazy to move it. Live and learn right?
Kristy--I would so not make a good military wife. My hats (and my heart!) are off to you. Maybe we can get together and meet a the zoo while he is away and have a fun day. or the melting pot? Maybe we can have a "mini-meet" and have ErinC come and join us also. Fun times.
DH is being dragged to the dr to have his numbers run this month. I am so afraid of what his are. Being the GM at Olive Garden can run havoc on your body....:jawdroppi

Actually - as long as we were above zero - I was good! Once it got below zero, I was not a happy camper! I don't like wind - warm or cold. It drives me nuts!
The kids and I are planning a trip to Atlanta while he's gone - going to go see the whale sharks they have there now! That's the only big thing we're planning - but we'll do little things. Beach all the time, movie nights, etc.
Cholesterol denial is good! I'm having a physical later this year - so that will end the denial I'm afraid!

My mother has genetically high cholesterol also. She did her very best to drop it by diet and could only get it down to about 210, I think:holymoly: Anyway, I am commenting on this because she changed docs a couple years ago and her MD put her on red yeast rice tablets and now her cholesterol is in the 140's!!!! She does not take any cholesterol reducing drugs at all! I was so thrilled with this that I habitually spread this news every chance I get!!
Hope it helps one or all of you!

Okay, more info here!
What are these (I know, I know, read yeast rice tablets) but what are they? And where does one get them? And why do they work? Side effects?
My whole IL family could use these, and I hate them being on regular meds, especially my dh and his brothers - they're so young. But I hate the side affects of high cholesterol more.

Okay, I don't know for sure what brand the doc has my mother on. I will find out her dosage amount for y'all. I did do a google on red yeast rice tablets and they are available at The Vitamin Shoppe, an internet vitamin store on the web I've ordered from for about five years now:woohoo:
My mother does not have any side effects from taking these that she is aware of and I am not sure why they work :headscrat but I will try to find out.

Important:
What is the most important information I should know about red yeast rice?
• Contact you doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if it is accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
• Alcohol and red yeast rice can both be damaging to the liver. Do not drink alcohol while taking red yeast rice. If you choose to drink alcohol, discuss with your doctor the use of red yeast rice. Another product or medicine may be more appropriate for you.
• Red yeast rice has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/ or advantages of red yeast rice may not be known. Additionally, there are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for these compounds. There have been instances where herbal/ health supplements have been sold which were contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/ health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination.
Also, do not take any frog based products with Red Yeast Rice, in fact don't take any frog based products ever!
Hope this helps1
-Tony

I haven;t read all Tony's references, but here's my take on this stuff - just the bio-chemist side of me coming out... I pulled this from a journal.
In 1977, Professor Endo in Japan discovered a natural cholesterol-lowering substance that is produced by a strain of Monascus yeast. This substance inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that is important for the production of cholesterol in the body. Professor Endo named this substance moncacolin K. Since then, scientists have discovered a total of 8 monacolin-like substances that have cholesterol-lowering properties.
Monacolin K is lovastatin, the active ingredient in the popular statin drug, Mevacor, which is used for lowering cholesterol. Lovastatin also is believed to be the main cholesterol-lowering ingredient in HypoCol and Cholestin™. The lovastatin in Mevacor is highly purified and concentrated, while the ingredients in Cholestin and HypoCol are not. Thus, they contain much lower concentrations of lovastatin than Mevacor. For example, each 600-mg capsule of Cholestin contains less than 2.4 mg of lovastatin whereas tablets of Mevacor contain 10 mg or more of this ingredient.
The main thrust here, I'd say, is that you don't exactly know what you're getting in some preps of red rice. The active ingredient is the same as what's in Mevacor, one of the older "statins". Many people might be better off just trying one of the newer statins like Lipitor or Zocor.
I'd guess your mileage and inclinations may vary. And as usual, don't do anything like this without talking to your doctor. The active stuff in red rice IS a drug.
I'm still looking into any advantages of frog by-products.

MAkes me think I shoudl have someone watching my liver (aka have doc watching) if I takes something. Not quite the herbal remedy it sounded like. Thansk fro teh in put! It sounded so harmless. wow.

This is the problem with a lot of "herbal remedies". Most people don't realize that most of our leading drugs are some form of an ingredient originally discovered in a plant. Or yeast. Some of the herbal remedies that a lot of folks consider as "safe" or "harmless" scare the bejeezus out of me. You sure don't wanna go mixing them or taking them with Rx stuff. Bad, bad idea.

question for the Doc and others in the know:
What about Fish Oil Tablets? I have added one to my daily vitamin, my brother a Pharmacist told me it might be safer than eating regular fish (we are having mercury issues here in the Gulf). But now I am starting to wonder??? Anyone heard any bad scoop on fish oil?:listen:

I belive that was actually recommended to me by a doc when I was young. I took it for several years in hs adn have lived to tell. ;) Plus, with the mercury issues, you're likely right about the pills being safer. Then again, I wouldn't have thought much about taking red yeast. :innocent:
ETA: I woudl think your brother the pharmacist would know if it had bad side effects.
