I hardly go over there anymore. I never had felt like an outsider as much as I did over there. SOOOO glad Kim and the other hero's made me a new home. It was truly like coming home and plopping on the couch after a hard day. Ahhh....home at last......
So honest opinion...k?....DH's bday party was last night, and yes, many Yeunglings were drunk, and many bottles of wine opened. DH and I somehow got talked into taking our moms for their 65th bday present to a SSR GV. They both kept gabbing about how they wanted their own bedroom, yadayada. I kept trying to get DH's attention with the vacation planner, pointing out it would wipe out a whole year of points. Plus borrowing a few more. And our 2-3 trips will go down to 1 in 15 mths.
Well anyway, after sitting down with DH and showing him crunched #'s, that we both decided that the GV was too much for just 4 people. So we are going to take them to the 2BR. and he and I sleep on the sofa. So that way they each still get their own BR. If more people were going, I would spring for it. But as it is now, we will spend most of our time in the parks, as MIL never been and my mom has not been in 20 years. Ok, long enough story, am I going to be a witch of a daughter for explaining to them that it will only be a 2 BR?
Unfortunely, and I blame this all on the wine, we popped open the DVC site and were showing them different accomadations and so they will know what they were missing. OKay, enough said. Whatcha think??? :innocent:
Hey Rozzie!
Are you saying that you may need to RENT points?
'cause I may know someone with a coupla 'extra' points :)

*popping Tony on the back of his hand* Ok big boy....behave now. Don't let all those points go to your head!
Rash - wow...Both of your children are simply beautiful (yeah yeah - Evan is a boy and not supposed to be "beautiful" but look at that child's eyes! He is gonna be a lady killer!!!) I am so very happy that you are feeling life's happy side again, that Evan's helmet is covered and that he is doing well, that your puppy appears to be healthy (cute doggie!) and that you have a wonderful spouse that I believe you really really appreciate!!! Make sure to rub her belly an extra time for that Mustang :) wait - rub the dog's belly, give the wife a foot massage while she sips a Yuengling! Life can kick us all, but it can only truly get us down and keep us there if we allow it. Like myself, you have so many wonderful things to keep you going! oh great - now Irene Cara is singing and rollerskating in my head....THANKS A LOT RASH!!! :headbange  hehe I guess bad disco is still better than most other "bad" things in life - I am so glad the tide is turning for you hun!!!
Rozzie!!! No no no GV for 4 people! Ok - well there might be times when it is ok, but not when it will cost you your vacations for the 15 months surrounding it! I am a vacationaholic and 15 months without a trip to da world seems like YEARS to me! Friends don't let friends DVC while drunk!!! We are staying in a GV at OKW for spring break with friends that we travel with often, but I did a transfer for them for the points. Hubby and I are springing for the points it would have cost us for a one bedroom, but all our guests in the GV and studio we are getting split the cost of the rest so everyone comes out WAY ahead! I know its for loved ones, but don't sacrafice too much. You work hard for a living giving all the time to everyone else, don't give away your chance at other relaxing vacations for a long time!
Glad to have you back Ms. Running Pooh Fan Carrie!!! We certainly missed you greatly!
I really really need to get back to work! ack! I have spent the morning catching up here, but I really needed it. My grandmother died Sunday morning, but PJ and I went down Friday night and spent the entire weekend there with my aunt, uncles and father by her side so that really helped me mentally. Godspeed to her - - she deserves an eternity of happiness and now my mother and uncle with down's that my grandmother raised who passed in 2002 have their mother with them again....whole...beautiful....vibrant! The women and men in the hospice were simply amazing and PJ was a great distraction for us all. We are doing a memorial service for her in March around her birthday, so back at my desk today. Still kinda numb, so if I make less sense than usual - - - well...is that possible?
Happy Monday everyone!

Hi Carrie! Nice to see you back!
Llovell - my DH can top that wierdness anyday! No ketchup, mayo, mustard, sour cream, ranch, blue cheese, onions, tomatoes, olives, nuts cooked in anything, ohhhh! The list goes on and on! That's the one thing about deployments I do like! I can cook whatever I like!
4 in a Grand Villa - I don't think you could get me drunk enough! They're lucky they aren't our relatives - we'd be staying in a 1 bdrm!

Let's see, I can't eat anything crunchy on pizza. No onions, no peppers, nothing like that. I love them in other places, but they can't be on pizza.
And I can only eat m&m's in two's and they must match in color. And I really have to bite my tongue if anyone is eating them around me in a willy nilly any-color-in-any-configuration kind of way. That's just wrong.
So now that I've scared some people, other than that, we'll eat most anything. Love all ethnic foods. Love lots of foods that many people won't touch. Although I'm not so big on food with suckers (octopus, squid, but I do like calamari, hmmm...). There you go.
Gosh, I'm fascinating. How do all you stand it?

Oh my gosh! I'm the same way with m & m's! It's impossible to get those or Skittles at the movie theaters because it's too dark to see what colors I'm eating!
What's really bad, though, is that I do that with ALL food. I'm to a point wherre no one notices unless I make a joke about it - been working on it since high school! But I also have to do pretty much everything in even numbers (chew, swallow, blinking). :dunce: Bit of the OCD going on here! My DH always teases me that he wishes I had the cleaning version of OCD instead.....yeah - real funny!
Just got back from the vet and now I'm off to take DS to gymnastics. Woohoo.

Sorry to interrupt the fun, but my wife's upset with me for posting what she considers to be a "bad" picture of Evan. So here is her choice of the picture I should have posted. I apologive tremendously for the self-indulgent baby photos. I promise to make a larger effort to keep my wife out of my mouseowners business, lest you be subjected to more shameless baby photos and god knows what else. Geez, all these years and I never post any photos on any boards. The one time I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy and actually post a family pic, I get corrected on it. Never again. Sorry. Back to whatever it was you were discussing (haven't had time today to lurk, I'm sure it's wildly entertaining).

Well, Rash, this picture of Evan is quite gorgeous. I will say, however, that the first pic may have actually been even cuter, IMHO. One thing you will have to re-decide is that 'never again' statement! Now that I have seen your beautiful children, I expect encores regularly!!!!!!!!!

Do either of you actually try to keep track of the bag? Looking for the "perfect" bag? His entire family had to switch to my way of eating them until they found a perfect bag, and then he called me to mock me! Ahh, the pain. And that day, I had eaten a Halloween sized bag, and not only was it not perfect, every stinking color had an extra, and even the number of unmatched extras was odd. Aaaahhhhhhh!

I'm not an M&M two-by-twoer, but I have my own little candy OCD that I've been caught in the act of many times... and it involves Snickers bars. :loveisint
I cannot - just CAN NOT - eat a Snicker bar as-is.
First, I nibble all the chocolate off the long sides and ends.
Then I eat the chocolate (with the nougat) off the bottom.
Then I take the remaining chocolate/caramel/nut slab, fold it in half (caramel side facing caramel side) and make a sandwich which I then nibble to completion. :goodvibes
I think my Snickers OCD eating (leaving the caramel for last) goes in tandem with my cheeseburger OCD - I always, always, ALWAYS eat AROUND the pickle. Nibble nibble nibble til all I have left is a quarter sized burger built around a pickle chip.
Why? :veryconfu
Aside from probably having sniffed too many vapors in the lab, I just believe in saving the best parts for last.
Rozzie
01-17-2006, 05:40 AM
okay, I feel like Dr. Phil is going to show up at anytime here, wanting to discuss our insane eating habits....
me? Kit Kats. Take the wafer, and nibble like a little "gopher" all the way around, making sure each little sliver is digested, then slowly take the remaining wafer, and even slower, suck all the chocolate off the wafer.
Okay, confession always made me feel better!

Secretary of Fun checking in here. I'm glad that we have a lot of new faces joining us at the happiest place on the net.
I'm getting ready for the everest preview at WDW. I've REALLY needed to get away and a friend wanted to go so, I had to book a trip.
Last weekend, another friend was visiting from Boston. He moved there about a year and a half ago. We went out and had a little fun.... Err, well, a little too much fun. Started off with Beer bust, then chocolate martinis, and then mojitos (mojitos are the new martini).
As for M&M's, I love them when they're warm. Warm chocolate is so yummy.

I'm not a wine snob....people should drink what they like. For me a nice pinot noir and some stinky cheese. YUM! But honestly I'll take a glass of whatever is open ;).
Since so many of you enjoy sweet wine, maybe I should mix up a batch of my famous (ok not really famous but good) red sangria. Loaded with strawberries, oranges, peaches, apples and liqueur and lots of Spanish wine. Ahhhhhhhhh.....now that is a way to kick back and enjoy. Cheers!
OK. So Saturday night was my night to kick some serious butt in Disney Scene It.
Santa brought this for DD11 and she has beaten me every game. In fact, she's beaten all of us, every time.
Saturday night the weather outside was seriously crappy, wind was howling big time, (sustained gusts over 50 mph according to our ever-so-perky-bottle-blond-super-coiffed-weather-babe.)
So, about 8:30 with a big bowl of popcorn and everyone bathed and jammied, the games begin. I nail my first answer and proceed to romp my way around the board.

I was halfway around the board, leaving everyone barely three spaces from GO when DD says, "Was that the fence?"
My first, purely useless male instinct - "Screw the fence, I'm winning" So as I continue to snatch a My Play from thin air, DW, DD and DS begin yelling at me from the window to watch as a 40-foot arborvitae is taking out a section of the fence.
Dag-nabbit!
Well, OK, I'm miles ahead of everyone. So out comes the squall-wear and off I go to tie the friggin' tree to the porch. I'm back inside 5 minutes later only to hear..."Oh no you don't buster, do something with that tree and fix the bloomin’ fence before it blows through the neighbors kitchen window."
Oh, alright dear....
So, by 11:30 that night, and after two trips to the 24/7 Home Depot, and a meager $75, I have two arborvitae topped off about 8 feet tall, one repaired fence, one humungous pile of evergreen detritus, ten frozen fingers, and a bad attitude.
I stumble inside, grab a Yuengling and take a peak into the family room. All cleaned up. Everyone’s asleep.
AHHHHH!!!!!! Victory snatched away yet again.
Well there’s always next Saturday.

Man, these boards are killing me. Salad on the one thread. Bisque and wine on another. I am hungry. If you all start talking about dolmathakia, I may have to shoot someone.
TW1, I am a musician, oh yes. And you had me singing throughout your post. Sing along, everyone!
If you're feeling blue, just start with only the first line of "Let it Snow!" with these timeless lyrics:
"Oh, the weather outside is seriously crappy..."
Now, to complete our winter theme in music, we're switching to "The 10 days of Christmas", but of course, our numbers will make no sense:
"1 trip to home depot,
11:30 at night,
75 dollars,
2 arborvitae,
8 feet tall,
1 repaired fence!!!!
1 humungous pile of
evergreen detrius,
10 frozen fingers,
and a bad, bad, attitude!"
It doesn't rhyme, but that, my friends, is art.
(That'll teach Carrie to give me crap about standing in awe. Who's standing in awe now, uh huh, that's what I thought, oh yeah, oh yeah!)

You guys talkin' about games reminds me of two nights ago...
DD5 yells out, "MOM! Come quick! COME QUICK! The Magic Kingdom - IT'S TOTALLY RUINED!"
:holymoly: :scary: :crymeariv :faint: :jawdroppi :boohoohoo
I race into the TV room, thinking what alien, hateful mind has detonated an explosive in my Happy Place? What carnage and ruin awaited my eyes in the other room?
But the TV was off. Instead, there stood dd, prophetically pointing in half-horror, half bemusement, at the floor.
Her Magic Kingdom game, formerly set up from the night prior's round of fun, lay on the floor. But the castle had been tossed to the left, the statues off to the right, cards strewn everywhere like confetti across the Kingdom... and there, sprawled clear from frontierland into Toon Town, lay the destructive force, still inflicting his special brand of devilish chaos as he lifted whole families up from the Kingdom and tossed them over his shoulder.
The Terminator?
No. Just Mr. Buns.
Evan's rabbit was out for his evening hop, and decided the game looked like swell fun. Apparently he hopped right on over, easily pulled up most all the figures, and had a grand time flipping the little familes around. THen, because the board felt smooth and cool, he sprawled out across it, his feet even kicked out behind him.
Caroline insists he wanted to "play" the game. Persnoally, I think he's overheard me dialing in the a.m. getting our ressies set for OKW for this summer. And the little lagomorph thought, "Leave ME and go to WDW, eh? I'll show you!"
And so he did.
(Editor's note - no rabbits - or cardboard families - were injured during the aforementioned scenario, so don't sick PETA or Mickey on us! Even the castle remains intact, as is the Haunted Mansion, though there is still some question as to whether Space Mountain has evidence of a tiny nibble.)

Yes and no.
Rabbits, by their nature, don't want to sleep in poo any more than you or I. So they pretty much train themselves. We had Mr. Buns about a week or two and it was evident that he had figured out, while in his cage, that it would be wise to do his "business" in the litter box we gave him, and leave his "living room" clean!
So my only "technique" would be a really big cage (his is a two-story work of art!) and a nice litter box. We initially put some of his poop (little marbles) in the litter box to give him the idea "this is where it goes". After that, it was all him.
HOWEVER - there is a disclaimer to this. When we let him out to hop, he is, being male, very compelled to "leave his mark on society", like a bunny calling card. We plan to have him neutered this spring, which the vet says will pretty much eliminate this aspect, but in the meantime, when he's out for a hop, we sort of fence him into one room, and I put old towels on the couch just in case he feels like leaving his "card" there (and he only leaves marbles - he does the wet jobs in the litter box. Thank goodness for that.)
He is a cross between a dutch dwarf (small black/white rabbits) and a mini lop (so his ears hang low - feel free to sing the song.) So he's only about 6-7 lbs. Here he is:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/ck26181/bunhomeworkpicsmall.jpg
I took him to the kids' school last spring and told the kids no, he was NOT the Easter bunny, but he IS good friends with him. That night, my brother sent me this link. Check out who's ridin' shotgun....
http://i.flowgo.com/greetings/rapeasterbunny/rapeasterbunny.swf
So as you can see, I had no idea how RIGHT I was! I showed the kids that night and they were EXTREMELY impressed - we have a celeb in the house!

Yep - my DH keeps insisting he wants the one that you have to go make into a DVD later on the computer - and I keep telling him NO WAY!
I want to easiest thing I can get my hands on so that I'll actually use the thing and get to SEE the videos!
Right now we just have the kind that play in the VHS adapter - well our VHS broke about 6 months ago - so we have no way of watching any of the old movies we've made.... DH wants me to use the computer - hook up the camcorder to it, download the video and make a DVD off the tapes...... :holymoly: Who does he think I am? Using the smilies on posts is high tech for me!:D
I'm current;y on the phone with our med insurance.... for the 4th time about a claim..... Oh rozzie, I feel your pain. My DH gives me the "It'll all be ok" speech when we buy something/go somewhere/etc. and then, when it comes back to haunt us, somehow, it's my job to "make it allllll better."
Now, for some positive news. You probably did NOT err in your camera choice. Some bright points to consdier - a lot of those DVD-direct machines only hold 30 mins at a time. SO much for taping the kids' school play. And you would still have to do some technical wizardry if you wanted to, say, edit or splice or put all your Disney stuff on one DVD, etc.
As for the "crappy picture quality" - I am wondering if he tried to do a transfer ont your computer through the simple cables provided with your camera. If so - he may not be getting true digital quality and it might even look worse than an old VHS tape. Best way to do it - get a firewire card for computer and cable for camera and dump it that way. (The firewire cards run around 20-50 bucks, I think, and cables around 20... check Cirucit City or similar elec. store, or even Wally Mart!) Faster dumping and true digiquality. (My DH made this mistake too - worst DVD I'd ever seen on my life!)
IN the meantime, however - why not just go buy a few more media cartridges and tell DH you may do a bit of research, but he can still have the joy and fun of making it "allllll better".... alllll on his own! (LATER - as in, after your trip!) ;)

bwhahaha - you ladies don't know how many times we have these sort of "arguements" at my house! That said, one rough pregnancy behind us (the first two were a snap) where hubby had to do just about everything from being super dad to also being super mom and while things might not have run as efficiently as they do with me at the helm, the ship didn't crash either and hubby has a while new respect for what it takes to run a household.
NOW - If I can just get Christmas put away! I need about 2 weeks...do you hear me up there??? two stinking weeks of no one being sick (Richard got the stomach bug AGAIN yesterday), no one in the hospital (Dad is still there - doing fine but still there), no one dying (my best friend's hubby's dad *whew* died suddenly two days ago - funeral Friday...visitation tonight....not to mention MeeMaw of course), no disappearing pets (think my sick pup finally left home to die and when he did, pup #2 followed him and hasn't returned and isn't at the pound, etc :sosad: ) no more people at work pushing and shoving to get to my desk first to pile it full, no more accountants calling because I am ALWAYS the first one to have my year end work done usually and they wonder where it is this year, no more no more no more!!!!! I am done! Thank goodness we got an artificial tree this year for Richard's allergies, because I have a wedding to go to this weekend as well (and need to work) so I don't know if I will get the tree down STILL this weekend. I have gone onto the DIS looking at the "two boards a flop" thread and I saw that JPmom has posted that her mom is no longer with us. It made me very sad but also made me smile because she was obviously a great person with a wonderful sense of humor who saw happiness in life even when she was not well herself. Hanname really defined the sense of community they took from us over there that we brought with us here. Patti had no idea how her typos changed so many of us for the better! (I see a thread about this now...but didnt see it before I typed it all out...see what happens when I come here first like always lol :) )

Rozzie, I wish you the best of luck going on a budget!!! We dont do the budget thing, but we dont buy souvies, etc either except for one trip to LEGO LAND *big announcer echoing voice* I will say that we went to the Walmart back under the interstate from Saratoga Springs on our last trip and wowsers did we save money. With small children in tow, it is much easier to eat in our rooms and I picked easy to prep meals or we ate left overs and ate out only once for dinner and had 1 counter service meal. We aren't park commandos anymore (semi-commandos) and like that middle of the day break.
Good luck with the WDW on a budget thing!

Hey Jonh - Our Pinewood Derby is next Saturday - I have to run the software on the computer they have...... I'm soooooo the last person that should be doing that!
For those not innundated by Cub Scouts - Pinewood Derby is the Cub Scouts yearly race of homemade little cars made out of pine.... wood....! The cut them out of a block of pine, paint them all up. DS 9 is almost done with his, and DH has to help DS 8 with his this weekend.....

Just got back from our Pinewood Derby! DS10 took honors with the "Best Webelos Car" award, and DS9 won for "Best Detailing". I think they could have won for "Best Nose-Picking" and wouldn't have balked, so long as they got a trophy, LOL! Even though their Dad and Mom are science nerds, we elect to skip the highly engineered "built for speed" designs in favor of humor and presentation (we're like The Far Side of Pinewood Derbys, I guess!) DS9 did a Star Wars theme this year -- called it the "DEATH CAR" (like Death "Star" I guess) but honestly, it looked more like a party wagon (which is so very very like the social party animal boy that built it, LOL). Meanwhile, DS10 did a great job with his Brickyard 500 idea - it honestly, truly looks and feels like a brick! (Well, two bricks, mortared together at the middle). He imitated it so well, right down to the gritty finish and chiseled edges. The kids were all holering, "BRICK! BRICK! BRICK!" which thrilled him to no end, especially since this was his last official Pinewood.
Soooooo... who's got good wkend plans? My wkend is going to be spent trying to make my DH happy because NEXT wkend he is soooo not gonna like me. I was told today the I am headed to Kentucky on business for 3 days. That not only means DH has all the duties of the kingdom for 3 days, it also means he can't play in his SUnday basketball league, AND... he has to fill in for me at the church youth group ice skating trip and carpool kids to/from the ice place (an hour away) for the whole day! Poor DH. This comes on the heels of me telling him I'm headed to Orlando (again on business) for 4 days in March... and that I quite likely will have to go to Italy and Belgium this summer. DH loves my newly increased salary now that I'm full time again... but my new travel schedule and such are wearing thin on him already. Sad thing is, I am really enjoying my new job - despite the politics and such, it is tremendous fun, or at least, for a chemistry geek, anyway. Maybe that's why this is so hard for me now - it was easier to rationalize leaving my family when I didn't even like what I was doing. Now that I enjoy it, I feel like I shouldn't... to quote Rex, "Oh Great! NOW I have GUILT!" :worried:

Sounds fun, Gopherit!
Just got back from the first indoor soccer game. We won 9-0. They stop officially keeping score when you get 5 ahead. We also took our "ringer" off of offense and moved her to defense after she made 3 goals in 6 minutes. And the other team played an extra kid for the whole second half. And still, we were only on our side of the field twice for about 10 seconds in the entire game. It was fun to win, but it's so hard to watch the other team. At least we seemed to have great parents on each side. In fact, one moment that stood out to me was when the other team's goalie blocked an especially good kick by one of our girls, and our entire side stood up and yelled "Awesome block, goalie!" It is so much nicer to be on a team with good parents.
Makes us feel a bit better about the season though. We are all first graders except for 2 second graders, and we're in a second grade league, so we were afraid it would be bad. We have heard this is the weakest team, but even so, I think this gave our kids a serious boost.
And, on other feats of physical prowess, the baby decided yesterday that he could walk. He's been walking on and off for 3 months. Every 5 days or so, he'd take 5 steps and bask in the glory of everyone being proud. But then he'd stop. I think he feels it's a very dangerous business. But yesterday, he just said, forget that, no more crawling, I'm a big guy now. He walked everywhere for an entire day, and only fell once, so it proves my theory that he's known how to do it for a long time, and was just choosing not to. What a cutie. He looks so stinking short when he's walking! Awwwww....
jnrrt,
They do look small when they are walking, don't they? Oh wait, mine IS small -- she was at the 0 percentile for height when she started walking. :o
Not much going on here today, except cleaning, cooking and oh yeah, packing for WDW. :jumpingbe

Great job! Our Pinewood is next weekend. DS is a Tiger Cub this year so it's his first Derby. He's also going with a Star Wars theme...not too surprising if anyone remembers how obsessed he is with SW! His kind of looks like a landspeeder....I say kind of b/c DH and DS are not too good with woodworking LOL
DH is the den leader (...more of a figure head since I do all the work :grrrrr:) Our Go See It is today. We're going to a Magic Show.
Later tonight we have a benefit dinner at a night club for DH's friend's wife and kids. (His friend was 35 yrs old and passed away last month after surgery due to an injury he received in a car accident on his way home from work.) They're expecting over 1000 people..mostly other police officers from around the area.

How tragic about your DH's friend. DH and I have had 3 funerals for fairly young folks in the past 30-40 days - weird. Most recent was for a 38 yr old mom of 2, wife of coworker - she had ovarian cancer that metastacized to other organs (colon, liver). They had told her 3-6 months at Thanksgiving, but by xmas, it was clear it would be weeks, at best. So very sad. Having lost a parent while I was a child (DF died when I was 11), my heart just goes out to those kids. ((Hugs)) and prayers to your friend's family.... :grouphug:

well sad news all around tonight. The Iraq War officially came home for me tonight. We found out that I girl I worked with for a couple of years died yesteday in Iraq. She was 25. DH used to work with her mother for many years before she got her own store. So we kind of "double" knew her. Her name was Kat, and she was the strongest girl I ever met.
gopherit, how sad. 38? It is so young. Those type of stories to be honest kinda freaks me out. I am terrified of cancer.
And stimpy, is this the same person I think you posted about a while ago. Didn't he die unexpectingly after surgery? Did they ever find a reason? Sorry to be so nosy, but I know (if I am thinking of the same story) there were a lot of questions surronding his death at the hospital. Sorry had to ask, I guess the nurse in me slides in somewhere.
okay, sorry to be a downer.
congrats on all the derby runs! I have many laughs reading about your little one's adventures. Especially first walks!!!!!!!! :lovestruc

It's sad losing family and friends, more so when they are so young. And it sure seems like it happens in 'bunches' too...Last year we lost about 10 members of our small mountain community over a period of three months.
And when my daughter was in school here, we lost way too many young people for a town this size...so much so that she was relieved to go to high school in the big city.
On another note....
I'm going to the Bronco game tomorrow. Gotta STOP the BUS IYKWIM. Or take the BUS to school. Going high style in Club Seats that I stayed on EBAY for days to finally snag at a decent price. But it will be worth it!

A big "ant" shout-out to all my nothing friends...
You know, this thread title is really something (pun intended). If DH asks, "What do you spend all your time at the computer doing?" I say...
"Nothing!" :fresh:
ANyhoooo... not to be a downer on such an otherwise glorious Sunday afternoon - but last night, after I posted, I was cleaning up the last dregs of xmas debris, which included our xmas card collection (we post all of our xmas cards on a door in our family room - I always leave this job for last because I hate to see it go! I just love seeing the whole door plastered with my friends' kids, cards from distant family, etc. It's what makes the pain in the patoookus of SENDING out cards worthwhile!) SO as I'm taking down the greetings, I comment to DH that I'm getting increasingly nervous. We never rec'd an xmas greeting from his grad school roomie. This guy was in our wedding, then moved to NH where he met, ironically, a girl who went to the same undergrad college I did (ironic because I went to a very small all-women's school down south) and married her. THe last we saw them was at their wedding in '98 but we kept in touch each xmas with holiday newsletters. Last year, his note arrived late in February and was somber - his wife had breast cancer, they thought they had beat it, but it was back and please pray for them. We hadn't heard from them since. We sent back a note saying we had them in our thoughts but still hadn't heard anything from them.
So curious me, thinking about recent events, went to the computer and, on a whim, typed in his wife's name. And up came her obit. She apparently died in April of 2005. We feel so badly, for the loss and also because we didn't know and weren't able to at the very least send timely condolences. She was only 33. :( Just so very, very sad.
So I woke up this a.m. determined to make the best of this day we're given! Told the family get up, get dressed, after mass we're going out for family b'fast! I have then spent the rest of this day putting up pictures all over the house that I've meant to frame and never got around to it. Pics of our family, kids, pics the kids have drawn that were just too cute/priceless to put in a drawer, etc. (I put these in the stairwell walls on the way to the basement / playroom - looks so cute! And honestly - they aren't bad! Some of the early stuff borders on primitive pointillism, with a touch of impressionist! ;) ) Also been getting things ready for DS10 soon-to-be-11-this-Friday's birthday party. Can't believe our guy is 2 years from teenhood. We truly have been blessed. And sometimes, the best way to honor life is to celebrate/cherish the one you're given.
Happy SUnday to you all! Off to sort through more pics and poke nails in walls! :tilt:

Gopherit, so sorry about the lose of your DF, especially at such a young age. It must have been and still be very difficult.
Rozzie, yes that was the same person. Last we heard is that the hospital is saying he died of a heart attack in the middle of the night. Would you believe, a week after the funeral 2 days before Christmas, the widow's father passed away too?! They knew he was sick but they expected him to last until atleast after the new year.
They had an amazing turn-out....over 1000 people. Last we heard the 50-50 raffle was at about $10,000. They also had ALOT of raffles, $36,000 worth of stuff was donated, not including the Garden City Hotel's donation of the night club, catering and open bar. (GC Hotel is a very expensive hotel here on LI.)
Oh and the grand prize was a week long Royal Caribbean cruise, Jet Blue R/T tickets and limo to and from port.....the catch was you have to use it for next Sunday's cruise. Little too short of notice for us so we passed on entering for that.
It was a good night but also heartbreaking. The wife was there with the 3 kids and they were sitting near us. They looked and seemed well, considering the circumstances. 2 of the children are the same age as our 2 and seeing the little one with his blanket, sleeping on Mommy's lap really made me emotional.
After the benefit, DH scammed me and made me go to another bar to have a meet with his friends from his favorite band's bulletin board. Of course, since he knows I wouldn't be thrilled with that, he didn't tell me until we pulled into the parking lot! :burningma Very nice people, but a little too obsessed in my mind....actually a little scary how obsessed they are with this band! Geez, it's not like they are discussing Disney or something exciting! :innocent:
So he owes me a Disney meet or two after that LOL

I'm so sorry! Was she in the military there or a private contractor? My thoughts are with her family and friends .:grouphug:
She was in the Army. And of course, she was getting ready to come home. I never had a year like this one. My cousin, she was 31, died in a car accident last Feb., leaving 3 small children behind-ranging 8 yrs to 8 mths. Then of course, as you all remember, Derek died. He was 25. His bday would have been last week. And now Kat dying in Iraq. It seems a lot of us here on the board have been affected some way.....
Oh, how I fear death. I hate that I do. Not the process of it, but the ending of my very happy life. I guess I am around death at work, and it always gets to me. I think I need to rethink how I view it. Not always wondering how much time I have left, but how much time I have NOW. Thanks Gopherit for reminding me where my mind needs to be.
That is why I am always up for a Disney trip. You never know what is around the corner. Seize the opportunity now.
Stimpy, your story about DH's favorite band and friends made me laugh. I think everyone has an obsession. I remind people about that when they make fun of the $$$ we spend on Disney. I relate all expenses in Disney money. I remember when a friend of mine got new (not natural looking in anyway) boobs, all I could get out of my mind was, "I could have added on for that much!" (and not look like a :innocent:):

TW1 - thanks! He would love a good meal. The food quality is what would count for him (well - quantity as well lol) so not too many requirements. yum, a fondue CD release party! :bouncingp :bouncingp I am so there!
hey nono, is there a expiration date of when you have to have your house cleaned? Like if it isn't cleaned by this date, then....? I really need to do some cleaning. I cleaned out Scott's and I closet, even color coordinated his work shirts  , created a new file system in the office. Oh 2 trips to the dump, like the real dump, which I wished I could tell a funny story. What a hoot. Then all the sudden, nothing, no motivation. Isn't this the year of the dog? Does it help if your house is run by a group of dogs????
Let us know jnrrt about the CD. I would love to support all your hard work!
Oh and AFMom, :goldfish: :goldfish: :goldfish: it will be OK. The nothing thread is all here to hold you up! And I am actually driving distance! So there! You are not alone!!

I soooooo want to go to the melting pot soon (I have been craving cheese fondue since I was pregnant!) but can you see it with 2 children that can grab and are extra bouncy boys? My baby sitters are all either out of town (dad in New Orleans) or in the hospital (father is still in the hospital but doing well) or just had a baby (little Maggie is soooo beautiful!!!) or well I don't know what to say about my other sister, but lets just say she is still "newly single" after being divorced for MANY years now and isn't so reliable.
How about we all chip in for a baby sitter and go and make it a "nothing" CD release party!!!

We don't have one near us either but there is a Melting Pot about 1 mile from the hotel we stay at when visiting sis in Delaware. I would love to go back, but we have 2 young kids too! The oldest would probably just suck up the cheese and chocolate with a straw and the youngest...well let's just say we'd all be WEARING cheese and chocolate!

It's a fondue restaurant. They put pots of cheese and other stuff on your table and you dunk food into it.
I see you're in Philly? Take a drive to Wilmington and try it sometime! The food itself is pretty good but we like to go more for the fun of it.

FIrst - Hugs to ROzzie, Stimyo, gopherit adn AFMom. Please forgive me if I missed someone this thread has been nuts lately.
Now, off to adjust my attitude...
7yu6. I must have a small head.
Speaking of small, my peanut of a niece was 3.1 lbs when born. Spent a lot of her life (OK, she's only 8) getting onto that size scale. I think she's up to around the 5 percentile now. Doc says she's just onher own chart. It's funny. When she started walking, people were amazed. She walked a ta normal age but was so tiny tha tpeopl ethought she was really young. I however, will look at a child misbehaving and theink they're old enough toknwo better, because they're so big. Luckily, I just think and don't do anything.
It's good to be back. :p
TW1 - thanks! He would love a good meal. The food quality is what would count for him (well - quantity as well lol) so not too many requirements.
First, apoligies to all but Laura for the long reply, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to start a thread on Whining / Dining...
When eating out in HHI remember three things. Flash your Room Key for the 10% discount everywhere, go early to avoid lines (like no later than 5:30) and/or do take out and eat in your villa. This was really important when our guys were a bit younger.
Anyway...the most simple, and I mean simple, pizza and pasta place is Giuseppe’s in the Shelter Cove Plaza, about 1/2 mile north of the resort. There’s another one with the same name but unrelated, down at the south end of the island. If calling from the phone book, make sure you have the right one! Anyway, we always eat there at least once, the price is right and you can find something for everyone, though there is nothing fancy about this place. The resort’s CM’s eat there a lot as well. Plus you get a 10% DVC discount. Word of caution, even on a weeknight in mid-March we’ve waited an hour for a table. My suggestion is to get there before 5:30. Final word, the owner is from Pittsburgh so there is bound to be some serious Super Bowl fever in the place. (Do not wear your Seahawks jersey when eating here!)
Hudson's has great hushpuppies and really good New England clam chowder.
Charley's Crab is popular, on my list though never got there.
Gruby’s New York Deli in the Fresh Market strip mall for lunch. I understand it’s owned by same family that owns the one in Atlanta. Pretty good. Huge sandwiches!
If you like Barbeque, I’ve heard Stickey Fingers was worth it.. It is a sit down restaurant with chicken, ribs, etc. Ribs for 2 is $24.99. It includes 4 different types of ribs, baked beans and coleslaw.
Stripes, and American Grill will satisfy everyone. It can be a bit pricey though.
The Sea Shack, Executive Park Road (Off Pope Ave.) is just like it sounds. Seafood-lovin’ hubby will like it. Maybe just do take-out for him.
Aunt Chilada's, Easy Street Café, 69 Pope Avenue is also popular, though again, I’ve not gotten there yet.
Wild Wing Café, 72 Pope Avenue at Circle Center. If you like wings, this is the place on HHI.
The Westin also has a very popular buffet. I hear it is well worth the price
Hilton Head Brewing Company, like Stripes, will please everyone, maybe a few dollars less that Stripes.
Hilton Head Diner is good old fashioned diner food, great for breakfast, not far form the resort.
Finally, Old Oyster Factory. It’s almost a must for every visitor to HHI to eat here at least once. Some folks rave about it others say its just ok. Yes, it is a very nice setting with a great view of the marsh (it’s the resort’s view from the other direction!). Yes, you will get very fresh seafood. Yes the menu will have something for everyone. Yes, there is a DVC 10% discount. And yes, you will wait for a table, and wait, and wait. (they do not take ressies.) We go back and forth on it. We’ve always had a nice meal, high quality stuff. Dinner for 4 was about $80. But there’s something about it, a bit touristy perhaps, a bit of a feeling of catering to folks who don’t go out much, maybe? Not sure how to say it. We go back every now and then, it certainly is good food, but...
Also, when at HHI, you must sign up for activities as soon as you check in. They will fill up. Make sure you do all the programs with the Naturalist, especially the morning beach walk. And make sure you meet B'Lou Crabbe and enjoy his magic show and his ghost stories. My DD11 is hooked on card tricks after meeting him and now they share tricks when we go. (She's got a great one for him next time we're there!)

Greetings...
Peachy Tuesday morn to all. Boy, some fondue sure does sound good.... but from a fat and carb perspective, sadly, no can do. :( I'm determined to be a stronger, svelter Gopher by spring - gotta work off my hibernation heinie!
A colleague of mine swears that if you order a meal and only eat half, then you get to "subtract" the calories/carbs you didn't eat (therfore making your total intake "zero"). In that same vein - if you buy 2 Yuenglings and only drink one - you're at zero. :ale:
I figure, based on that fuzzy logic, if I buy 2 beers and make one a Lite beer and DON'T drink the "hi-test" one, then I should be workin' my way towards negative, right? SO maybe if I go to the Melting Pot and order two meals, and don't eat one, I'd be just fine... if anyone wants to join me, feel free (but you'll have to take on all the cals/carbs on YOUR plate, LOL!)
Ahh, in a perfect world.... :goodvibes

Adding on to TW1's comments:
If you want bikes and need a "tagalong"bike, go quick to the rental place by the pool - those go fast. My dd LOVED it (not at first - she didn't like the idea of looking at my gopher fanny the whole time, and frankly who can blame her, but after a quick ride, she decided it was pretty cool only pedaling when she felt like it, never getting "left behind" and she could always look ELSEWHERE than AT my behind, LOL!)
If you want parent's night out - sign up fast, it booked up quickly!
For dining - DH and I ate at Scott's which is very convenient (just right over in Shelter Cove). We also had 9 of us at San Miguel's - we thought it was good, but a colleague of mine swears Santa Fe Cafe is MUCH better, so that's on our "to do" list for next time!
We went to Sea Pines one day, and we picked up before our trip a coupon for Giuseppi's off Restaurant.com (NOT the same one that TW1 mentioned - same name, different business!) The coupon was a $25 certificate that we bought for about 6 bucks - GREAT DEAL! They have $10 ones as well. THe place was tiny and loaded with Pittsburgh Steeler stuff (much to my PHilly-lovin' DH's consternation, LOL... and my DD kept asking, "Who is Joe Green, and why was he so mean?!?") Friends of ours who go 2X per year t oSea Piunes say they love it there and always include a meal here in their trip. The food was VERY good (calzones, pizza, pasta).
We got ice cream at Salty Dog while we were there (had plans to eat there, but still too stuffed on pizza at Giuseppi's!)
We also ate at the Disney meal offering (BBQ and Seafood thing). Frankly, we thought the seafood thing, while good, was probably not something we would ever do again. There are so many great seafood places around there! The BBQ was good, and the seed-spitting contests and ice cream contest and such afterwards were fun, but we saw lots of folks coming over for the games that did not eat at the BBQ, so I have to say that next time, we might not elect to do that, either. THe BBQ and Seafood meals book up fast, though, so if you are interested, get 'em when you sign in! (That is done at front desk, whereas activities are done at service window by pool).
One last comment - we sort of avoided eating at Signals / Tide me Over because, in my primitive thinking, I considered these to be standard counter-service fare and not worth our while. On our last day there, I caved to pressure from DS (who for some reason had a burning desire to eat at Signal's) and ordered sandwiches and such which we all shared. VERY GOOD! Maybe it was just the surroundings that made it taste so good (being at the Beach House), maybe we were just exceptionally hungry, or maybe their fry cook is Spongebob's mentor, but the grilled cheese, burgers, fries etc. were EXCELLENT. No complaints. Even fussy DH noted they were quite good. And I thought the kids' meal prices were quite reasonable, for what we got.
HTH! Gee, now I'm missing HHI! ;) We have plans to try Vero on our next beachy non-WDW trip. Maybe I'll have to do HHI instead and work Vero out some other way, LOL.... I'm still thinking that, if contemporary is announced, I'd like to put my name in with a reseller to start looking for HHI pts (I figure some monorail-lover is going to free up some nice little contract either there or at OKW in order to buy Contempo pts!) A gopher can dream, right?:sunny:
OK Gopherit, I thought I could get away with just a 'simple' HHI post. But now you've got my head swirling with nothing but HHI. Oh to be there right now...
Yes, I forgot Scotts Seafood, right over the bridge. I liked it as well.
I also second Gopherits take on the resort special meals. We did them in the past but skip them now.
And yes, the two counter service places at the resort "Tide Me Over" near the main pool and Signals at the Beach House are relly quite good. (Fun game to kill time in Signals... It, of course is a nautical theme and there are signal flags hanging around the inside of the eatery. When waiting for your food, let the kids figure our what the flags spell. Each table top has the flag "alphabet" imprinted on it.)
Also at Signals, they will work with you on the menu items. For instance,
