Geesh, the forcasted path of Ernesto has traveled about 700 miles in the last 24 hours. Why don't they just admit that they have no clue where it will go! Yesterday afternoon it was headed toward the Texas/La border, last night it was aimed at us, and this morning now we are clear over towards Tampa. I know I sound a bit jaded ( I guess I am). I don't want to even think about having to board up the windows again. I hate it for anybody in it's path. Right now we are reliving all the 1 year anniversary of Katrina stuff this week. Go away Ernesto, GO AWAY!!:tsktsk:

Kristy- did you all get much damage from Ivan? I assume that you would have had more damage from it than Katrina. Sorry the scout event was half rained out. I've gotta go to DD10's scout meeting today. I'm just the snack Mom for her troop (thank goodness).

When do Roz and Kimberly get home??

I hope Ernesto goes back down to a tropical storm and then heads our way. We so desparately need rain! I'd be glad to look like this for a day or two. :umbrella:

We got exactly 10 min of rain today from 5:50 a.m. until 6 a.m. That was it! We ran our 6 miler with the blackest cloud cover and huge thunderheads and yet, NOTHING! I hope this doesn't mean we'll have a bleak and rainy fall. That would be a bummer.

I think Rozzie and Stimpy wrap it up today. Can't wait for the trip reports.

I'm home! Stimpy and I tried very hard to think of a way to stay another week, but alas, the logistics would never gel together.....

What a blast, so much fun we had! :woohoo: Long story, lost my camera for 36 hours, so I didn't get a lot of pics. I am going to try to bribe Stimp to write the TR, she is a much better TR reporter than me. :computerg (we all remember my blurbs, LOL)

My flight back was a nightmare. Too tired to relive for now, but when I saw Mr. Roz pacing at the terminal, I figured something was up. Guess it was a bad day for flying...smart man decided to withhold information on the plane crash until I landed. Little did he know I all ready spent the majority of my flight thinking I was a goner! :headache:

But all the fear was so totally worth it! We had so much fun, I so wish we were back there. Lots of laughs and wonderful memories.

Welcome Home Roz and Stimpy, glad you are back safe and sound. Stimpy, hope you found everyone allive and well when you got back.

Roz, based on today's forecast, it doesn't look to me like you have much to worry about. It also looks like it now is heading towards my area, but Ernesto seems to be weakening so maybe we will only get some rain that is much needed. At any rate, I will be running away from the storm on Saturday, headed to Shalimar, and I am hoping it will all be over for us by then--no fun driving in the rain.

Looking forward to that trip report, so get :computerg you two.

Hi Folks.

5000 posts and 501 pages to the Nothing thread. Geez! That's a lot of Nothing.

Though really there is so much going on here. My thoughts go out to Kimberly and her family. And to Erin who seems awfully lucky to walk away from that one unscathed.

Our vacation in Colorado was a hit. Such a beautiful state you got there CB! (I honked as we fly past on I-70, woke DW who wondered what the heck was going on.) Though the whole time we couldn't help thinking how much we missed HHI!

Anyway, we did have a blast. Landed in Albuquerque and drove to Mesa Verde via Gallup and the Four Corners area. Mesa Verde and the cliff dweller ruins was a fabulous site. Stayed there 3 nights and even fit in some whitewater rafting. Then it was off to the Black Canyon and then on to Aspen before ending up in Boulder with my sister for two nights. Drove over 1300 miles across the state and hiked in some awesome places, Kids were real troopers when DW and I dragged them up and down trails at 8,000 feet and more. And yes, there is no oxygen up there and mountain streams are awefully cold.

Anyway, got a bazillion emails to answer and some actual work to do, but its good to be home.

Welcome back Rozzie, Tw1 and Stimpy!

TW1 - that sounds like a GREAT vacation! I am sure you missed your beloved HHI, but you will enjoy your next trip down even more! One of these days we will have to branch out with our clan from the neighboring states (Florida and Tennessee mostly - occasionally Alabama).

Glad you all got home safe and sound!

Starting off the week busy here as well. Almost time to take my Real Estate license test so I guess I better actually start studying :blech:

Nono - we could use some rain too. It looks like we might get it if the storm does head straight up Florida as they are CURRENTLY predicting. But, as
Erin pointed out, they are giving worse odds than Vegas lately on being accurate. lol

Back to the grind! Nature Valley Sweet and Salty bars in the closet. OMG they are soooooo good!!! I can't decide if the peanut are myt fav or the almond! Yummy! :yummy:

2nd week of the diet, will it be harmful to me if I chew on the desk while I post???? I hope DH isn't late getting home for supper or he'll be eating alone!;) 4:30 's not too early to eat is it?

I'm really excited about tomorrow. I'm finally using a Christmas present that DH got me in '05. He gave me a gift cert. for a massage, and facial at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. I kept meaning to use it, but then Katrina came and the hotel was closed for 9 months. They finally reopened, so I need to get down there and use my cert. before another hurricane blows in and closes them down again. I figured after the wreck a massage might be really nice.

Well, for some reason no one broke into my house and cleaned it for me while I was gone today. Gotta get some work done around here.

Hi everybody,

This may be the first time I have ever replied here without reading the thread, so I hope I didn't miss anything too significant, but I just wanted to tell you all that I'll probably be gone for a while. My dad is doing really badly, and I'm over there a lot. Hospice says it'll probably be this week, and frankly, I'm a mess. Then we're supposed to go to FL for 10 days, if we still go. So, I'm just doing the requisite don't-worry'about-me-I'll-be-back thing, and I hope you all have a good time while I'm gone. I'll check in if I need a little "nothing".

J, I'm so sorry about your Dad! My thoughts are with you this up coming week especially.

Well, my Grandmother always knew the importance of a WDW vacation! My mom told her that I was going there for the weekend and asked her to hold on until I got back. GM did! She passed away the night we got home after she "heard" I was flying back.

The funeral was this morning. She was buried with her 2 favorite Goofy stuffed animals, an old postcard from the Poly and the lei a Poly CM was nice enough to let me have during our weekend in WDW. (Thanks for understanding Rozzaroo and CB!!) :o

Just popping up to offer hugs to jnrrt and Stimpy.

Stimpy, isn't it amazing how the will to live - even if for a last moment with a loved one - can surpass medical reason? DH's grandmother and he had a special bond, and she was in the final stages of lung cancer under hospice care at home during the Xmas holdiay when we knew her days were drawing near. She was defying all medical reason - other than the will to hang on for one last visit with her grandson. We put DH on a plane pronto, and she died within hours of him arriving at her house. To this day, he is so very thankful that he was there, with all his family, when she passed, even as sad a day as it was. It gave him a real sense of peace I know he would never have had otherwise.

Anyway, so very sorry about your loss, and I hope that your family feels that same sense of peace, and that the memories and love you shared with your grandmother help to somehow ease the pain of your loss.

jnrrt, prayers for strength and peace to you as well in what must be an exceedingly difficult time for your family.

I'm having a bad day - but this thread certainly keeps it all in perspective right now.....
Our cat has been vomiting for 2 days, took him to the vet - and she's pretty sure he ate some sort of string. It has his intestines all up in a ball. They're going to have to do surgery - and do multiple incisions on his stomach and intestines..... I hope he comes out of it ok. :worried: He's the sweetest cat. I have to be honest - I'm also freaked out about the bill. That, of course, is a minor worry - but we just don't have spare change right now....
And at that picnic - I'll take some of that crack, and bring sides of margaritas...

Kristy, I hope your kitty gets better fast. We went through 2 different cats having major major surgery within about 1 year period. It was extremely stressful, both emotionally and financially (we spent a couple of thousand $ for both). I remember how guilty I felt about worrying over the financial part. Unfortunately, with the high cost of vet bills, it is something we have to atleast try to be realistic about. Good luck to you, your family and kitty!!!!

Ok, back to some nothingness....two questions:

1. How do you dry flowers? I have some roses and carnations that I need to dry so I can store them until our trip in November. (Shhhh....we're having an informal kind of ceremony for Grandma at the Poly :innocent: Just flowers...I promise nothing else :o )

2. How much would you tip a grocery delivery person? I had to place my first ever online order. The cubbards are bare, children are starving and I have absolutely no time to go food shopping! :scary: It was only about $90 for the order. It should be delivered tomorrow afternoon.

Depends on how many grapes are left when he delivers them.

Ginger
08-30-2006, 05:40 PM
Kimberly, I've dried roses by placing them in a clean, dry vase and letting the air dry. Make sure they aren't crowded so that air can flow. I've also seen people hang them upside down to dry. When dry, take off petals. If the ones in the middle aren't dry enough spread on a flat surface to continue drying.

I have no idea about tipping for grocery delivery (that's not offered around here). A quick google search reviled everything from "it should be included in the delivery fee" to "$1 per bag" to "$5-$10". I hate figuring out tips for anything other than restaurants.

Rozzie
08-30-2006, 05:46 PM
Gosh Stimparoo, I would just pay my weight in gold for someone to deliver my groceries. I would never ever have to go to WalMart again! :woohoodan Can't help you on the dried flowers either. I have tried several times to do it, and have always failed at it. Let me know when you figure it out!

Kristy, don't feel bad about getting nervous about the price. I would be stressing too. A lot of vets can put you on a payment plan. (Been there, done that, got the Tshirt...) Hope your kitty gets to feeling better soon. Keep us updated on kitty, okay? :flowerfor

Still thinkin' of you J. Hope you can check in soon.

lllovell
08-30-2006, 05:51 PM
Stimpy - was there a delivery charge on the groceries? If no stairs and an easy to reach kitchen, then I would tip about $2 a trip in from the car, so probably around $8-10 for $90 worth of groceries. If they did a good job sorting or help out a lot, then maybe a little more. What was your time worth for NOT going to the store? At least $10 I am sure.

Also, to dry flowers, I hang them in a nail upside down (stems up - flowers down) in a place where they wont be disturbed and it is warm and dry. If you just need the flowers themselves, I would go ahead and take them off the stem and place them somewhere warm and as dry as possible scattering them out so they can dry more quickly.

If it makes you feel any better Stimpy, last year we had to replace a toilet because Richard (then 3) flushed a bathroom Dixie cup down it and no matter how hard we tried, even when we pulled the toilet OFF the floor, we couldn't get that cup out. NOTHING worked, so a $0.03 cup cost us $100 for a new toilet (probably more...because I think we ended up with an extra "tool" or two out of it lol)

Not always - depends on the type loan and lender.

Kristy, what a callous person. First to think it - and secondly to say it! Obviously money hasn't bought HER any love. Even my DH, who makes all sorts of jokes about drop-kicking Mr. Buns therough the goal posts of life, understood when he saw how pitiful he was the time he got sick. And I know if it were one of our cats, well, those are HIS babies. We nursed one back from death's door a few years ago (allergic reastion to some anesthetic caused a brain swell - she came home deaf, blind, and in muscle spasm unable to walk or eat. Had to feed her through a stomach tube 3 times a day. Can you believe it - that was 8 years ago and she's still wtih us, she's the best little cat, and though she did remain deaf, she gained her sight and motor skills back (mostly, anyway.) And she thinks she is a kitten. The kids just adore her, and she sleeps with us every night. Not go through what we did to help her? Unthinkable!) Maybe you should put it on terms she could understand - go take a baseball bat and give her car one good whack on the hood. Then ask her - does she plan to have it fixed, or just scrap the whole car now that it's dmamaged and will cost money to fix? Some folks only put value on things of money, unfortunately. Bet her car doesn't keep her feet warm at night like our cat does mine.....

Ok, I realllllly need to be cleaning right now. And here I sit. Well, my oven is in self-cleaning mode - does that count? I have worked my tail off the past 2 weeks at work, and before that was our big vacation which I haven't recovered from yet, nor properly mourned the final demise of, and yet, in just T minus 21 hrs and counting, DSIL and DBIL will be here with their trio of kids until SUnday. And it's supposed to rain all weekend. Greeeeeat. Mr. BUns is already not happy - I am going to the basement in a minute to get an extra "fence" of protection to put around his cage so no little fingers will be prodding him. Besides, I am afraid my 1 yr old niece will think his poop is a bunch of cocoa puffs, and Mr. Buns shouldn't have to take the heat for giving her salmonella when she chokes back a handful.

Well.. back to the grind. I told DH no matter what, I'm headin' to bed by 11. Clean or not. Let the dust fall where it will. I have never understood cleaning before kids come in anyway. It just gets messed up again! Off to go change out the pig cage and fence in Mr. Buns.... later gang. Before I go - I'll just take the melted dregs of those margaritas, please... gulp*gulp*gulp*gulp*.... thanks, that helped a lot.

:kitty: $594 and counting.......

OK - so I had a lady (one of the moms) at swim team act like we were nuts for doing all of this "Just for your cat" and had the nerve to say "well - glad some people have that kind of money"..... ummmmm..... she drives a new Mercedes.....
I told her we didn't, but it was going on a cc, she rolled her eyes up. I asked her" well - what should we have done - let the cat die an agonizing death?" People.........:hammer:

Kristy...I just went through this 6 months ago with my dog. She stayed overnight in the emergency room 1 night and 1 in the hospital on her first visit. Then we had to take her back 2 weeks later and she was in the hospital for 3 nights after her surgery. Now that was close to $3,500 and the surgery couldn't fix her problem so she has to be on two medications for the rest of her life and a special diet. And I have to get the dog food at the vets because they don't sell it in the stores. She is doing fine. I was lucky and never had anyone say anything about spending all that money on a dog.
Good luck for a speedy recovery for Kitty

Gopherit - I had those same thoughts about her car as I was sitting, looking at her, dumbstruck. I hate it when I can't think of a witty reply until after the moment is past! Although totalling her car with my truck isn't so much a witty reply as it is a act of vindication. And the image of your niece throwing a handful of bunny poo in her mouth really made me laugh! Thanks!

Decided to actually be a Stay at home Mom today, at least for a few hours. Company is threatening to decend on me next week, I better start cleaning house now.

Kristy, sorry about the cat. I can remember when I was little that our cat had kidney stones. This was a very special cat. I had gone to visit our teenage neighbors house(she was moving away), and she gave me her cat. She sent me home with the cat under one arm and a box of tender vittles under the other. I think I was like 5 or 6 at the time. I walked in the door and told my Mom,"look what MaryBeth gave me!" My Mother was so mad! She told me to take it back. I said "Daddy will let me keep it!" And of course he did, because he was an animal lover. My Dad being the animal lover that he was took the cat to the vet. We had no extra money to spare growing up, most the time hardly enough for what we had to have, but Dad couldn't stand the thought of putting the cat to sleep. I still remember him saying that the vet bill was over $300 (in the 70's), which was a lot of money we didn't have. My Mother on the other hand was not an animal lover and was just trying to get him to put the cat to sleep, but he paid the vet bill somehow. We had the cat til I was in high school. The funniest part about the cat was that it's name was cannabis(at least that is what MaryBeth named it). I couldn't understand why Mom and Dad said it couldn't keep that name!:D So, I renamed him licorice, because he was all black. So that's my expensive cat story. Briley is allergic to cats, so no cats at our house now.

Still don't have my car back yet. It got painted yesterday, so maybe today will be the day. The shop is really busy right now, so I'm trying not to bug DH too much about it. I figure all his other customers are doing that!

Well, Ernsesto is determined to drench our Labor Day plans.

Took the kids to the Aquarium in Cmabden NJ yesterday, first visit, not bad, fairly decent theming I thought, but a bit too pricey when you add the $7 parking on top of it all. Yes, you want to use the lot. $7 is fairly cheap insurance when leaving the car in Camden.

Tons of work and little interest. Any junk food in the closet this morning?

And since we are eating healthy, Yuengling is all natural, right? I mean, water, hops, barley, and such? Though I never did figure out why the water they bottle from that same stream costs more per gallon than the beer.

Speaking about costs per gallon...I paid just $2.79 for gas this morning and the news last night reported that prices could be way below $2.50 soon. Sounds good to me!

Please come here first... and rescue me!

Went to bed @ 1... so much for "11pm or bust". My self-cleaning oven didn't finish until 12:15 and I didn't want to go to bed until it was done and off. THose things get so blazin' hot, it freaks me out. SO I freshened up the piggie cage, fed Mr. Buns and let him out for a hop, mopped the kitchen floor... and started picking up toys on the family room floor and then must have somehow fell asleep because I woke up nose-to-whisker to Mr. Buns grooming my hair. Talk about a shock! Poor dude had his little legs crossed because I had his cage door shut - he couldn't get back in to go potty. So put him away, and then went upstairs. Still a lot to do to prepare for the guests. Looks like we may be rained-in all weekend - UGH. And my basement is still a mess and very very un-childproofed, so no help there. This isn't the sort of town that offers a lot of entertainment venues for young kids, LOL, so not sure WHAT we will do! Could get ugly!

Well, better go - got a few reports to kick out before I head off to the bakery, grocery store, and home. Nachos sound good - can I get enough for 10 people in a "to go" bag so I don't have to cook tonight? :)

Well - I have a clean house, lots of food, and get this - NO GUESTS!

They called - not coming. Got about 1.5 hrs out of town and one kid had thrown up twice, the other once. Turned around and the kid threw up again on the way home. Car sick, they think - not a virus.

I predicted as much to my DH waaaaay back when they announced they were coming - I said I would believe it when I see it, becuase they simply don't travel at all, and NEVER with the 3 kids. Last time, only BIL and the eldest child came - and that was about 3 yrs ago. Farthest from home they have gone: 1 hour. On flat roads.

Now here's the thing, though - when I visited this summer, they noted then that their ds had gotten ill on a recent 1 hr trip, threw up both coming/going. THey said he does it every time, so they knew he had a propensity for carsickness. In their defense, I don't think either has ever experienced just what this feels like - neither has my DH, and I KNOW he has NO clue why I GLARE at him when he drives like Mr. Toad on these WV backroads. So anyway, they knew he might get ill. In contrast, I have been a car-sick kid since birth, fought it for years, so I know the do's and don'ts, that's for sure. WHich is a good thing, since I have 2 kids that recently have developed this malady (DS11 started at age 7, dd6 is now starting - weird, to start so late, but I have my theories, LOL, and I'll get to it later.)

SO... those of you who share this curse will therefore understand my shock at what they then told me: "Yeah, we were so surprised when he threw up. We tried in every way we knew to keep him comforatble: we only gave him orange juice to drink, no food, at breakfast, so her wouldn't have food on his stomach, and we told him to just watch the TV as we rode."

OMG!

I was ready to barf just hearing it. I didn't want to sound too know-it-all rude or anything, so I just said, "Umm - orange juice - wow. THAT had to hurt on exit...." They never tried Dramamine or the usual array of motion stuff, yet apparently had felt concerned enough, prior to their trip, to ask their ped. about the "patch" but the ped. said no, he didn't recommend it.... so they elected to go with orange juice and TV, I guess. Wow.

So then I tried to delicately explain to them the ins/outs of car sickness... how they might want to consider letting him munch somehting bland the whole way - like Cheerios or Goldfish crackers or a ginger snap... and sip something like slightly flat ginger ale, a bit of pepsi.... and put him in a seat near the window, NOT the center, and have him watch the world go by... or try an antihistamine tablet to reduce fluid in his ears... or travel at night so he could just sleep through it all...

SO ANYWAY... I was very sorry to hear they drove for 3 hours just to experience that (and get nothing out of it but messy car seats), and am sorry about my eldest nephew (who was old enough to be upset that his visit was canceled, yet too young to do anything but blame it on his siblings) and I also guess they now know they will need to take some other precautions before planning any other future travel. They can't go anywhere (even by plane) that they wouldn't have to drive at least an hour - so it's something they will have to consider for ANY travel they do. And I am so very sorry for those kids with an empathy born of knowing EXACTLY what that feels like - it really really STINKS to be motion sick. I had 3 years of "freedom" from it during the years after my 2nd son - I don't know why - but I did. (And ironically - he is the only one of the 3 kids who to this day does NOT show any signs of motion sickness!!) During those 3 years, I felt so FREE! I was traveling a lot with work, too and it felt great! PLanes, cars - no problem. COuld even read while traveling! And then I got pg with kid #3 - OMG. COuldn't even look at a PICTURE of spaghetti and not feel like losin' it. Or even plain ol' chicken. ANd travel? Really bad. And sadly, 6 yrs later, still is. I love to go places - but getting there, for me, is he**. It has become psychological, it's so bad - the day of travel, even if my flight isn't until that night, I'm already ill. I'm not afraid of planes... I'm afraid of feeling sick because of planes! Or cars. I am better if I drive - so car travel is not too bad and DH is more than willing to give me the wheel, but I doubt the pilot will scooch over to let me do that, LOL. Even Mission Space is out for me. THe kids wanted me to do the "easy route" recently while the three of them plus DH did the "real" ride, and I had to tell them no can do - still recall getting so very ill on the "regular" flight once those asteroids hit. Ugh. :blech: No thanks - I'll just stand here at the ride exit and help Team Triton get the boost over Orion.... ;)

I am NOT, however, surprised things ended this way - I am WAY too good at predicting things within my DH's family... too bad I can't use that power in the state lottery, LOL. And if they thought that first hour on the road was bad, just wait til they would have hit Cumberland MD and the Scenic Highway... that poor kid would have been dehydrated like a raisin by the time they reached West Virginia. I am surprised they didn't try something like Dramamine, though - something. Perhaps the ped didn't suggest it though, and since these kids were 2 and 1, I know in many places, you have to ask for the liquid form at the pahrmacy, so maybe they didn't know a liquid form existed. They didn't know about trying Benadryl, either. SO I guess I was surprised they weren't more educated on car-sickness management, but then, they never really go anywhere, so there ya have it.

Well, guess I can head home now to my clean empty house, LOL. DH and I talked and I think we will rent some movies and try to make the wkend fun (even if it is going to be a real rainout). One rainy wkend when DH was gone on business, I let the kids "camp" inside... even made smores over a "campfire" (lots of unscented tea lights in a cake pan did the trick...) The power had gone out, so we had no lights, but a battery powered radio, and we danced to the music. THe kids still talk about that night.... maybe it's time to make another fun cheap memory together like that.

LATER!!!

Awww Gopherit - I feel sorry for those little ones! (and you and your little ones that suffer). I can't read in the car or do much else actually, like sleep because my one wreck I crashed out asleep behind the wheel and was woken quite suddenly by a phone pole, so I would much rather drive. My morning sickness was all over the place with the kids, but the worst with little Miss PJ. It lasted the whole time unless I kept something on my stomach. I can't imagine feeling like that every time you fet in the car....that would stink!

I agree with Carrie - I am glad that you have a nice clean house and it sounds like you will have a fun weekend anyway :) I have bought a few new DVDs for the kids and I am waiting for just such a time for us to have a nice "camp in" when there is nothing else we can do. Took DS to the park after work last night. His aunt gave him this really neat toy plane that you pump with air and let it fly. Well, took a few tries to get it right, but when it took off, it REALLY flew. Up, up, up it went and about 100 years later, lodged itself at the top of a crab apple tree. Poor DS. He was a good sport about it, I must say.

I went back to the park this morning before work and it was still way up there. A good 30 feet off the ground. Maybe Ernesto will dislodge it later today.

If that kid was older, he could have used a Yuengling.

Oh - DH and I can relate to the plane in the tree. My DS's have lost s few of those kinds of toys that way..... Not a lot of fun for them.:headache:
Kitty came home this afternoon.:D He's jumpy, drugged, and not very happy. Hopefully he'll return to his normal self soon. I adore this vets office.:loveisint Not only are they all so nice and helpful, they love on the pets, and treat them like family. But on top of that - they never charged me for the last 2 days of observation, food, and didn't charge me for about 1/2 the meds they gave him. So the total was $594 - I was so happy it wasn't more!:doublejum
Anyway - not alot of plans here. DH is working on the electrical in our addition and I'm going to my CubMaster training tomorrow. Other than that - housework. We can't go anywhere, got a call this morning- DH was put on "1 hour" alert status and we don't know why. This means he has to be able to report to the squadron within 1 hour of the time they call him in. Basically he has to be home. We think it's because of Ernesto (their squadron does a lot of search and rescue stuff here in the states - ie Katrina rescues) and don't think they'll actually need them. I'm just hoping it isn't something overseas that we don't know about. I really don't want our trip on the 10th messed up! 9 days to BCV and USO/IOA!!!!!!!:jumpingbe

Nono - my hero! Slide me one down this way. We got that rain yesterday and it is so nice here today :) I am glad you are getting some as well.

Carrie - I was getting worried about you but I figure you are getting geared up for your trip too. I am already turning green with envy! :)

TW1 - lets see - Sat morning, all the grandkids are getting prof. pictures made (8 of them - weeeee). I do hope we get a good group shot. Swimming at my sister's after that. Sunday having dinner with the family that is in from out of town (step-sister that I am NOT fond of, but can tollerate. She isn't comfy around us either and gets WAY too loud. It is sad really). Monday, I think I am going to go and see my father.

I know you all are familar with his heart troubles and that he is now on perm. iv meds. Well, he is doing ok, but not great. When he went on IV meds, they told him 6 months to a year for a heart. He went to the doctor last Monday and they told him that the way he is feeling now (after a month on the perm. iv meds) is how he is going to feel from now on until he gets a heart. He is tired, run down a lot. Trying to keep his liquid intake down to not have breathing troubles, etc. We all think it will be WAY less than 6 months and he is going to end up in the hospital for good waiting for a heart. Being in the hospital full time will put him at the highest priority for a new heart so that is good, but the realities of how sick he has become is really hitting me lately. So, I am trying to see him more often, to talk to him on the phone weekly at least and just keep hoping things will turn out all right. He is 57. Mom died at 53....instead of eating this ice cream, I should be exercising or something huh? So we will take the boys to see Grandma and Grandpa at the lake this weekend on Monday I think :) They love the lake and swimming is always a hit!

Now, we just need someone to do the yardwork (looking for a service - just too dang much to do ...and life is too freaking short to spend every weekend tied to things like a lawn for me right now)...and maybe a maid service for every other week and I might just make it.

Of course, I have to convince myself that the money going out for those things is worth it! As Snooty Snoot (hi Rozzie :loveisint )will tell you, I am an admitted cheapie! Just gonna have to not worry about it! yeah right!

Tonight out to eat for my Pawpaw's birthday. He's 80 something 3, 5, I'm not sure.
Saturday I don't know.
Sunday maybe kayaking if it doesn't rain.

DH is a hunter (hope no one gets mad at me, we do eat everything he gets) and this is opening weekend but the place they hunt at is behind in harvesting. So he's not sure if they have a place to hunt or not. I do know we plan to cook on the grill a lot- beer can chicken, boston butt, hot dogs, whatever DH gets hunting (goose or dove). Not all at the same time, but throughout the weekend.

TW1, been there done that with the plane. About 2 yrs ago, DS(then 8) got an Air Hog plane from his grandmother. Took the thing out in her front yard, tried it - nuthin. Tried again - nuthin. He was really bummed, and Grandma was embarrased - sure looked like a dud gift. And then - WHOA - it worked. TOO WELL. That sucker went SOARING - did a few loops, finally ended up banging into a neighbor's window about 5 houses down the street and crashing in her bushes. You should have seen my 2 boys and I chasing after that thing while it was in flight - we looked like cats chasing a fly. After that - we only let him use the thing down at the ball fields - no trees around in a 6-baseball diamond radius, LOL. Soccer fields great for that too.

Speaking of cats, though, great to hear kitty is home and recovering, Kristy! Gotta love a good vet - they can be hard to come by. I really hope my niece can get into vet school - it's so competitive, and she wants to do this so badly, and I just know she would be awesome at it. She is working with the equestrian center at her school this semester and recently had to help "impregnate a horse". My sister gave me this info, and no, I did NOT ask exactly HOW my niece "helped" - (light candles and put on some Luther Vandross?!?) but I did think to myself - with a post like this. it's just too bad ol' Rash ain't around.

Hey, if there are drinks to be had - Give one to the Goph! Yum yum!

ANYWAY - no biggie plans here. THink we will rent a few movies for tonight - it's reallllly gross out. TOmorrow should be nice, and we plan to attend our high school football game in the evening. DH wants to take kids to the Drive-In Sunday night just for fun - they are showing Monster House and Talladega Nights back to back. Figure dd6 will be sound asleep by Talladega, so not too much of an issue with the PG thing there. OUr local drive-in is kinda cool and the kids loved going there last year around this time. We bring our food and lawn chairs and blankies and have a grand ol' time. DH of course likes it cuz it's cheap, LOL.

Well, this here rodent's gotta run! Happy Weekend, folks - don't labor too hard!

lllovell- I'm sorry that your Dad is not doing to great. I hope he moves up the list quickly. We have a yard service too. DH works ungodly hours all week. The last thing that I want to do on the weekends is sit around and wait on him to do the yard. I can cut it,(and have most of our married life), but I cannot crank the gas weedeater and edger. You can only just cut it so many times without doing the weedeating and edging before it looks really bad. So anyway, I hired it done this year. It's been really nice not to have to worry about it. I still need to get out and weed really badly. My idea of weeding consists of me walking around with a bottle of roundup!:) When I worked, I did have someone help clean the house every other week. If you can at all afford it, you deserve it. You work so hard all week, and with three kids I know the place stays immaculate!!:Pokepoke:

Kristy- I sure hope nothing serious is up. That is kinda scary. Glad you DH is getting work done on the addition. By the way, what will the addition be when it is finished?

Hope everyone stays safe this weekend from Ernesto. Gotta go and take DD to a birthday bash for a friend.

Well, from now on, I'm posting my weather requests here to the Nothing gods. It worked!

We got enough rain! Ernesto came and sat and has now gone, leaving us enough wind to dry out a bit!

Apparently, some apartment complex lost its roof (?) at the north end of the island. We only had 55 mph winds....uh, roofs here at the coast shouldn't even be thinking about coming off at that low of a wind speed.

Hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of their long weekend! :howudoin:

Dear lllovell,

Sending you and your family best thoughts. Your story took me back 15 years ago when I was experiencing the same with my father. Over the years he has learned about diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, bone infections, blood infections, and a myriad of other ailments. He went off the list for a heart less than 2 years after he went on the list; 6 months have turned into 15 and I am thankful for every day.

While every situation is different, I am sending positive thoughts your way that you and your father will be able to continue a long relationship with many years ahead of you.....

Plane recovered, thanks to Ernesto.

Weekend wrapping up, its 11:41 pm Monday. Staying upo to crack the newspapers that are piling up. Kids start school on Wednesday. I'm staying home with them Tuesday. We'll plan our trip to HHI next August and set our calendars for later this month when the 11month window opens and we start dialin'

Hang in there Laura. Your dad's a lucky guy to have family like you.

ETA: Sports just wrapped up and my man Ryan Howard (the Phillies firstbaseman) launched his 53rd home run for the season today. Not bad, but yesterday he hit three in one game!

Yes, quite the chatter in this house as well - I guess I may have noted in prior posts I'm surrounded by Philly sports fans (one by birth... the others just livin' vicarously as Phillians through their dad....)

Glad to hear the aircarft was recovered. :goodvibes

Where the poo did our long wkend go? Could swear just minutes ago it was Friday, 5 o'clock, and I was rejoicing about having a clean house, no guests, and no plans. Now it's over 3 days later, my house is messy, we have no one to blame but ourselves, and nothing to show for it except perhaps 2 fixed toilets, a somewhat more organized computer room (organized yes - but cleaner - no. Now the mess is in "piles"), and 2 kids with bellyaches from eating too much movie theater popcorn this afternoon.

I think we were robbed of our big long "relaxing" weekend - I want a do-over! :crymeariv

Not much happnin' in the burrow today - still mourning the end of the wkend! Godiva choc raspberry truffle coffee is in the pot - help yo'sef.

Ooooodles of stuff to do this week, at work and home. Lordy I despise the school year. I have to try really hard to not let my kids see how much I HATE it! The homework, the projects, the totally full calendar of practice, meetings, games and such... ugh.

Pardon my vent - skip it if you're depressed already.... but it does NOT help that our family is in the middle of a mess with our little church right now. It is a very small parish, with increasingly few kids there. I am the director of rel. ed there, and a teacher, and have been trying to help folks understand it is a matter of time (and not much of that) until we simply can't have CCD classes. We have about 40 kids... but 12 of them are high school senoirs/juniors. Another 12 are grades 9/10. that only leaves about 16 kids spread across grades K-8. My ds10 is one of only 3 kids, and my dd is the only 1st grader. I already vowed she will NOT do 1st communion alone. Been there, done that myself - no thanks - made my confirmation alone too. there are some great (larger) churches nearby, so she has options I never had. The priest of our church is elderly, has had major health issues lately, is not supportive of the Catholic schools, and frankly, hasn't ever been a resource for me as director there (and I've been doing this for about 5 years). Furthermore, the priest has made some posts in the bulletin I found to be insulting (comments about Catholics should only marry within their faith... when 50% of his parish, self included, are married to non-CAtholics. And, I should point out, those non-CAtholics are some of the best parishoners he has!) ALso some posts about the CAtholic school, what we parishoners should be doing, etc. THe man really needs to retire, and should have this past winter, but refused. For several Sundays, we didn't even have mass - he vnever scheduled a replacement, and he was in the hospital - we had nuthin! The parish elders are afraid for him to retire because they think when he goes, the church goes. They have asked me more than once to simply "not say anything to anyone" (meaning the Vicar or other church officials). THey can't see that they are keeping him in the church at the expense of their own spiritual enrichment (cuz believe me, we haven't felt THAT in a LOOOOONG time. Or at least, not this Gopher.) So anyway, our family has decided to leave and go to a neighboring parish, but we face the difficult aspect of how and when. If I leave - well, I already know no one is going to pick up my reins. I will be like a captain abondoning ship. And I have already had a few families tell me if we go, they go - I feel a bit overwhelmed by it all, because if THAT happens, well, there's no way the parish will sustain itself over the long haul. Or short haul even, for that matter. I have spoken with another priest (from the church we plan to move to) who advised me to speak with the vicar and "make him aware" of the situation in my parish... so in addition to everything else, I now feel like a mole. NOT the sort of rodent I really wanna be. Sigh....

I also feel liek a heathen. Took my ds10 to see Talladega Nights. He has seen Harry Potter and POC and some other "PG-13" movies that I had previewed first and thought would be ok despite the label. I'm pretty cautious about that stuff. BUt I made a gross error in judgement on this - forgot that there wasn't any sort of violence in this movie, so the sort of things that make it "PG-13" would be TOTALLY different. I mean, in HP or POC, clearly you're dealing with the macabre aspects that make it PG-13. Same for the Star Wars movies. But in this movie, , there wasn't anything gruesome or witchly or such - it was all sexual humor - and a LOT of it. Lots of bodily part references. And some gross stereotypes. I will say, though, our discussion AFTER the movie told me he knew way more about everything in the movie than I ever gave him credit for. There were some laughs, and not all of it was bad, but nonetheless - I REALLY wished I had made him wait for the made-for-tv-version. He must have felt my unease, because the whole time we were watching, he would say, "I know , I know - I should NEVER say that!" I told him I wished he/we had never HEARD that either!! I really goofed, and am still feeling the remorse. :worried:

Hey, does anyone know - is there a place you can order movies that are edited "well" (by that I mean, chop out the offending words, but still a good quality copy of the movie). There are some movies that I think are great EXCEPT ofr stupid 5 second blurbs that the movie clearly could have done without and were plunked in ther to "up the rating" to attract broader audiences.

Well, enough of that depressing talk. Gonna go freshen up the ol' coffee cup, and plan some new and exciting experiments in the Gopher Lab.

LATER!

Draggin from the weekend here too! So mad at DH, the man was trying to torture me!:hammer: He came home Friday night to eat supper and then went back to work. It was the end of the month and he really wanted to get all his paperwork done. So he comes back home about 12:30am. I was still up watching TV and smocking a dress for Addison. He stands at the end of the bed and says "Lets pack up and go to Florida." I look at him like he has two heads and ask "what do you mean Florida?" We only live 40 miles from Pensacola so going to Florida isn't that big of deal. He says "you know what I mean, lets go to Orlando." I would normally jump at any opportunity to go to the world, but I was trying to be sensible. A 7-8 hour drive down on Sat., spend Sunday, and Mon. morning and then have to drive back home on Mon. I just couldn't see doing it. Now, if he just would have mentioned it Thursday night, I'd have been packed and ready and we could have left about 5 on Friday. I would have done it. We ended up getting up Sat. morning and heading over to Destin (only 2 hours). Spent Sat. and Sun. nights at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. I was great. But of course he had to rub it into the kids. "I offered to take ya'll to WDW, but your MOM said NO!" Of course, I kept thinking I could be at WDW all weekend if the man had just given me a little notice.

I've got company coming tomorrow, so lots of housekeeping to be done here. Certainly didn't get anything accomplished this weekend while we were away. Got scout meetings and room mother meetings today too. Guess I better go accomplish something.

I was thinkin' the same thing Erin. Ummph. Men. Mr Rozzie's idea of getting ready for a trip is walking and to the car and cranking it up. :blech: I don't even have kiddos. You know, we have never stayed over in Destin. I hear it's gorgeous, we always just drive over for the day. Did you do the outlets? I want to go stay at that new Watercolors. Isn't that nearby too?

Gopher, I feel for you. I can't offer any advice, except to share my sad experience of leaving a church. We lost friends, and are labeled heatherns. I hope your experience of leaving is a better one then ours was. I do believe you have to make the best decision for your family. Sounds like you are on the right track, and everyone in the Gopher clan will be better off for making the move. Don't beat yourself up on the movie too. You are super duper mom. I do hate how they insert all the wrotten filfth into movies just for a rating. It's like creativity is out the window, and when they can't think of anything to say, they just insert crude filfth.

Well my mom is home from her latest RV journey. She has decided she is going to "save" my brother's and I relationship. I told her that ship sunk some time ago, but she is welcome to scuba the salvage. We did have lunch with my cousin, she was the mom of my beloved cousin that died earlier this year. She seems to be hanging in there, and my mom kept bringing things up, talking about him, (nice good things) but I felt so uncomfortable for some reason. I guess it's how it ended, him taking his life, that makes me on egg shells. I just tried to naturally let her (his mom) steer the conversation. Still so sad, and so many regrets on my part. I guess I still have issues with it.

For all those with trips coming up, have a blast! It's so nice to get away. :goodvibes

 to Laura and Rozzie!!

Gopher, sorry about the church situation. Our church doesn't even know we exist, except when the envelops come in the mail. Admittedly, we aren't too active in our church, we have a large parrish and I really can't relate. But I do hope you and you family can find a solution you can be happy with.

Erin, if DH ever did anything spontaneous, it would take about an hour to revive me! :holymoly: Then I'd probably just throw a whole bunch of stuff in a suitcase after that, buy what ever I forgot when we got there. But I have absolutely no experience with that situation :hahahaha:

My own DH (which the D does not stand for Dear right now  more like soon to be deceased! ) is on a roll lately. Deposting $25 in vent jar!!!! Yesterday, he flooded the 1st floor bathroom and laundry room with gross toilet water. Yes, I said HE did, not the 6 yr old, not the 2 yr old...the almost 40 yr old! I have never met someone so unhandy in my life! He was plunging the toilet...my fault, of course...I asked him why he didn't flush, he told me he did but it was clogged.....Ummmm...so why didn't you fix it!?! Grumble, grumble, he goes gets the plunger. Plunges, flushes, plunges flushes...at this point I come over, the water is already up to the rim....just as I say "Why!?!?....." he flushes! :scary: Water goes everywhere! Disgusting water and he just stands there. At this point I am furious! I take the plunger away from him (deciding NOT to beam him over the head with it!), start taking cup fulls of water out while standing barefoot in toilet water :yuck: Finally, I get the toilet running again as he is standing there. Of course, guess who gets to scrub and clean both rooms (and of course run directly into the shower)???

And then today, I get an email from a new trivia show, from WWTBAM, telling me I have to go for an audition next Tuesday night (9/12) in NYC. Yep, he did it to me again! He keeps signing me up for these shows, pressures me into going (but hasn't been successful yet :innocent:) Several months ago it was Jeopardy which I didn't go. DH is a big time fan of trivia shows. He's obsessed with getting on them and winning. (He has been on 2-3 and won a car on one a few years ago) I am NOT. I have a fear of being on video, forget TV!! When he was WWTBAM, I was hoping he wouldn't get into hot seat just so I didn't have to be on tv....forget the million! I think he just likes to torture me!!! :scary: Oh wait...maybe he is spontaneous after all! Be careful what you wish for!! :hahahaha:

Wow, Erin, I'm with Stimpy - if my DH came in and said "Let's go (fill in blank with anywhere that actually costs money and is more than 30 minutes away)", I would need a blood transfusion to make up for all the stuff I lost when I cracked open my head against the floor as I fell into a heap of unconscious blubbering protoplasm right after the words exited his lips and hit my ears. You should see our family on the nights he suggests (without any prompting) that we eat out. Actually, I'm not sure that's ever happened. But if it does - you should DEFINITELY see it, because it will be the 8th wonder of the world, LOL.

I'm back! Believe it or not, our flight on Friday made it out of Philly just in time...no delays. As we were sitting at the gate, the plane shook and I thought it was the crews closing the baggage hatch, but no...it was the wind shaking the plane (not what you want to experience before taking off!), but the flight was relatively uneventful...just a little bumpy, I've experienced alot worse. What is that? Is it some secret NJ code? :)

DH heard from his Dr after his yearly physical. The Dr says his triglycerides are a little high and wants to put him on TriCor. It's a fibate, not a statin. We are researching it before DH makes the decision. It just seems that Dr are so quit to hand out medicine instead of allowing changes in exercise or diet. Dh's diet is excellent but he doesn't exercise much, but that's about to change. :sunny: His parent's have high cholesterol, so his may be heredity. I'm kind of upset about the whole thing.

You're very wise to do some homework, GInger. I agree - so many docs are way too quick to dole out the goods. I once went to an OB/GYN practice that had 2 docs I loved, but one I despised. Why? DH and I called him Doctor FeelGood - mention ANYTHING to him and you would walk out with at least 3 Rx. He gave me Percoset in my 5th month w/ my 3rd kid just because I said my legs hurt... I used the Rx for my grocery list. I am not one to just "cover up" ailments, I guess!

My mom has pretty good cholesterol, but lousy triglys. Same for DH. BOth come by it naturally - DH has ALWAYS had high triglys, since he was a boy. Looks like our eldest is a chip off the poorer side of dad's genetic block, too, as he as well shows elevated triglys relative to his brother and sister (and yet HE'S the kid who eats the fruits and veggies and tendsto shy away from the chips/staches end of things... go figure.) Mom, however, was a voracious smoker for years, and also a high-stress individual, and thus had a heart attack about 4 yrs ago at age 70. THey immediately slapped her on statins. THe medical he** she went through after that - oye vey - and the docs would NOT listen, hust kept prescribing more. I started doing my own little poll around my workplace, town, 'net, etc., and have come to the conclusion that if your cholesterol is truly out the roof, and diet doesn't help, those statins can indeed help. But if you DON'T fit that category - nine times out of ten, it seems the patient will have big problems (leg pain, liver issues, etc) trying to make a statin work. And it takes so long to get the little suckers out of your system too. I will say, I heard more complaints about the effects of statins from the women I talked to than men - wonder if there is something to that. Of course - please do remember that I'm not a doctor (or at least, not the right sort, unless you need some Fourier transform infrared spectrometry done on yo' head, which is extremely doubtful) nor did I stay in Holiday Inn Express last night, so take what I say with a grain of salt and don't call me in the morning, you get the drift!

Anyway - has your DH tried dietary change? The Zone is about the only one I would endorse - it is not an extremist diet like Atkins, and really just an overall good healthy plan that allows almost anything, just in the right proportion and intervals. You can check it out on www.zonediet.com or www.drsears.com. My MIL went on this to help with her fibromyalgia and also help my FIL (who is the source of my DH's high trigly heredity). I have tried to get my mom on this, but she is a waffler which does NOT work. (She will fix an American Heart Association lunch of no-fat, low-sodium but high carb pasta and a big honkin' piece of bread ... then for dinner go to Hardees and have an Atkins no-carb fat greasy burger wrapped in lettuce. She doesn't seem to see that by doing BOTH diets, she is doing NEITHER, God luv her. :sosad: ) I really think the fish oil tablets work too. DH and I take those. Pretty painless way to help yourself, and also part of the Zone plan. I was doing AWESOME on the Zone (went on it a few yrs ago to help with my hands - I have arthritis, mild for now, but not really wanting it to get worse!) I went on it for health, not to lose weight, though I did lose about 15 lbs. Anway, I fell off the wagon you might say and just got back on it this month. I really do feel better on it - it's amazing. Sears advocates going off the diet after 30 days, just for one day - so you can see how crappy you feel afterwards, LOL.

Hi all! I have to say - I can understand why you choose not to go on the trip - it would have been very difficult - but that was sweet of your DH in his own way. My DH can't understand why it takes so much planning to go on any vacation - and he'd be perfectly happy with 1 change of whatever clothes and winging it - I can do that in a pinch - but I actually enjoy the planning!
I'm so excited!!!! OK - so we were supposed to leave Sunday to go to BCV and do Universal and Sea World. This is a surprise to the kids- so we were telling them that we're driving down south to look at a car we might buy - we had decided on that story about 3 months ago - no car - just an excuse, right?
So now we're leaving Saturday morning after my son's soccer game, renting a car (our truck is a gas guzzler - so it's actually saving us money), driving to Lake Worth, FL (near West Palm Beach), and looking at a Mercedes deisel (1996) that's down there. We want to get one past it's warranty and convert it to pure vegetable oil.....
I just think it's hilarious that we are actually going to go look at a car! On Sunday we'll return the rental car there and drive up to Orlando in our purchased car (if we buy it) and surprise the kids! :coolcar:
My only concern is that once we get on to Disney property they'll assume we're going to the Disney parks and actually be disappointed when we tell them Universal and Sea World. I mean - I know they want to go there as well - but they are Disney nuts just like me. We're going back down in December for the Disney parks, though, and that's only 3 months from now.
My plan this trip is to go see the Electrical Water Pageant at WL, we want to do the Chip and Dale Campfire at FW, and go to DTD. Of course - we have an entire day set aside just to play at SAB. So there will be some Disney going on!
Can you tell I'm about to burst!? :dancingba I need this vacation so badly.:woohoodan
How ya doin', llovel?
Has anyone heard from Jnrrt lately? I wonder how she is doing....
My DH basically did Atkins for about a year - he's now doing more of a Zone diet - but in that 1 year period he lowered his bad cholesterol, raised the good, and lowered his triglycerides. He went from having unhealthy levels of everything to having all good levels. He also lost weight and felt much better - less tired all the time. I can't do "Atkins" - but we do low carb, whole grain, etc here and I think it's going well! Of course - my kids hate the buckwheat pancakes.....:hurl:

Ah Ginger, good to do research. My beloved has a follow up for his bloodwork in a couple of months. He drives me crazy. Refuses to eat right (not that I am a role model) or exercise (not a role model there either, I guess). He though even refuses, or has he states, continously forgets, to take the vitamins I get him. We also take a Fish Oil, errr, I take a Fish oil everyday. He's so bad though, he won't even want to take the dogs on a walk with me. I just don't think he gets it, I'm sure my nagging does wonders too on the whole thing.

I do agree, some Doc's will slap ya with a script too easy. I guess they are burned out on the menality of the US, where most peopel prefer a drug and not give up anything. I had a Doc once that was a candy Dr. Got kinda old, as he would never even look me in the eye, just would be bent over writing out scripts. :sosad:

Good Luck Ginger with your DH. I know you seem to eat right, something I so need to start doing. Is that why I'm meeting my mom at Panera Bread this am?? :headscrat

Thanks for the thoughts Rozzie and Gopherit. As I said above, DH's diet is excellent. I'm a healthy eating/cooking buff. We've always eaten lower carb than most. (I can give you the nutrition % breakdown, ect, but you probably don't care. LOL) For him it's exercise that's bad. He takes a handful of supplements (fish oil, vitamin, cinnamon, etc) every morning and night. His total cholesterol is fine and his "good" is excellent. It's those dang triglycerides. He's also type 2 diabetic (but that is very much under control). The Dr said the high triglycerides can be a side effect of type 2. So between that and heredity, I guess he's out of luck. If it's not one thing it's another. I really like this doctor, I'm just not big on prescription medication. :)
I've been really busy at work today, but have researched a little. Seems these fibrate medicines aren't has bad (side effect wise) as statins. The Dr said he wants DH to try a few months and then do more blood work to check. I'm sure a few months won't kill him. But I still worry. KWIM?

Gopherit, my OB Dr passed away a few years ago. So I got assigned to someone else in the practice. The first time I saw him (3 years ago) I mentioned something and at the end he wrote me a prescription "just in case." I never filled it (never intended to). Every time I go I have another prescription already written when I get there. I've told him I don't want it, but he says "you might". Silly. I think Dr's much get kick backs from prescription companies.

:hahahaha: oh I mean Bad Viking!! :tsktsk:

First day of school today! :kickingco DD had us all up bright and early for "bus!"...she doesn't even go to school yet :headscrat Going to the bus stop is her highlight of the day so at 6 am she was ready to go. Too bad the bus doesn't come until 8:30 :headbrick She was screaming at us to get dressed and put on our shoes! :drillserg

No tears from this mommy but plenty from some of the others. (Heck, once my terror starts school I'll be dancing a jig the first day!) Especially when one new kindergartener didn't want to get on the bus. Her mom was fine (2nd child) it was some of the other moms crying for her! It was kind of cute in a weird way.

Ah prescriptions...one of my fave part of going to the doctors. :sosad: I actually have a good sized stack of PX's for me and the kids that I never submitted. Everytime I walk into an office, I get 2-3 more slips of paper. If anyone needs anything let me know! :scratchch

okay back from library. Checked out the Southbeach diet, and bought at their used bookstore The Zone for $1. Going to read both, I got to get my butt and Mr. Roz's butt in gear. It's not really the losing weight part I am getting concerned about (even though we both need to lose at least 25lbs a piece), it's the Tri's, Glucose, and LDL's. My grandfather dropped dead with a heart attack at 41, so it's time for me to get serious. Even though my labs are okay, as I said earlier, Mr Roz's are very borderline.

So off to go read, and see which one I could live with. Gopher I know said she did the Zone, and nono I know does Southbeach. Any other experiences with these?

I can give up the wine, the beer, the sticky buns. But caffeine, that is whats scares me about Southbeach. Think I would deviate right off the bat for that. Mr Roz's aunt lost 45lbs on Southbeach, and got perfect bloodwork #'s now, think I might give her a call.

all this diet good eating talk on the Nothing Thread has got me motivated! :)

Rozzie, I personally like Body for Life. But if you don't like working out, it might not be for you. Of your 2, I like the zone. But South Beach has some good looking recipes. :)

What is that? Is it some secret NJ code?
Shoebees and Bennys are local slang for the tourists (mainly from Philly or NYC) that visit the Jersey shore towns during the summer, clogging the streets, making noise, littering, and spending way too much money to keep those towns afloat. :Pokepoke:

I thought Shoebees came from the term for the folks who came on the bus for the day and for whatever reason carried their lunchs in shoe boxes.

Bennys, I thought, were the folks from NYC who dropped $100 bills (Ben Franklins) left and right.

Did I get that right Viking?

Well, then hallelujah the Shoebees and Bennys left here too on Monday!!! I was trying to get to the market on Monday; stuck in traffic for an hour and moved about 1/2 block. Went yesterday, same time, and it took 10 minutes to park, run in and get my stuff, and leave....

Living in a tourist time has definite advantages and disadvantages.....

Pretty much on target, except for the $100.00 bills.

Shooby's or any one of the many spellings is an old term dating back to a time when Philly folks used to take the train to Atlantic City or other shore points and bring their lunches in a shoe box.

The term BENNY originated from the letters of the train stations on the Jersey Shore line where annual toursit come down to the shore and mess up everything between Memorial day and Labor day.

Bennies was also a derogatory slang for the Italian's in NYC. Well, Italian's took the trains to the Jersey shore. Italian's were the abused minority at the time so Bennies became their nickname. Lot of hatred associated with Bennies, but most people have forgotten about that part of it.

THe SOuth Beach is actually liked a "kicked-up" plateaued version of Zone, or at least, I think so, anyway. ON the "maint" phase of SB, you are pretty much zoning. ONe diff is that on Zone, you are allowed - no, instructed - to have "snacks". Treat your body like a machine that should be properly and consistently fueled, not revved and left empty, revved and left empty. SO for example, before bed, you might have a glass of wine and a piece of cheese, or a bit of celery an hummus, or some similar little protein/mild carb snackeroo. Same goes at mid-day. I like to use the dinner-plate version of Zone - VERY easy to manage. Just think protein the size of the palm of your hand, then fill the rest of the plate with suitable carbs. You can have rice.... but as with any starch, in moderation. On the other hand, help yourself to those fresh green beans. You really learn which veggies and fruits are your friends, LOL. All those years of munching carrots like Bugs Bunny as "diet food" will soon end! I liked the fact that Zone is really intended to be a life-diet of simple moderation and balance... the fact that you will lose weight on it is just an added "plus". I never could cotton to doing the "building block" form of the Zone - too much math. When I'm hungry, I don't wanna count blocks! So the plate method worked for me. I just used the charts (on line or in the Zone books) to determine how much of particular carbs I could have, and made sure I was indulging in the more "starchy" ones minimally. I like the breakfast of cottage cheese with blueberries, mandarin oranges, and a few nuts - I take that all the time to work. ANother thing that helped: I bought luncheon-sized plates! In my same dinnerware pattern, LOL. That REALLY helped on portioning things for DH, LOL. He still had a "full plate" (overflowing, by perception!) but with a lot less being consumed (or wasted, in the case of the kids, whose eyes are often bigger than their stomachs).

Maybe we can all be each other's support - we are headed into fall... during which I usually do ok with my diet and staying active... but once winter hits, the Gopher wants to hibernate.... and usually, with a box of Girl Scout cookies!! Bad, bad, naughty little rodent....please help keep me honest!!

Thanks Gopher for the explanation of The Zone. I thumbled through the book, and to be honest, the science just flew over my head. I couldn't imagine a life of building blocks and a calculator. I might thumb around on the web some and find the Idiots Guide to The Zone. I did read his theory's and were extremely impressed with his reserach and his Chronic Fatigue correlations. (something I have self diagnosed myself with LOL, Gotta love WEB MD)

I wish his book dived more into practical ways to live with it. Or maybe I just skimmed that part....:innocent: This might be the thing for me! :sunny:

Can't resist jumping in. Any diet that teaches one to strongly minimize refined or simple carbs and focuses on complex carbs instead is a good bet in my book. Personally, I believe in very careful carb consumption for me at least, even of the good kind and I prefer to focus more on veggies and protein for the most part. I am always looking to see that my carb choices have plenty of fiber in them.

Unless I am at Disney of course...then I eat Mickey bars and other yummy bad stuff:lmbo:

Then you sound like a bonaifde Zoner, LOL. He's all about making "healthy" carb choices (versus the Atkins way of eliminating them and putting your body into a state of ketosis.) We used to have dinners with corn, bread, rice.... we were atomic starch bombs, LOL! We still have those things now ... just not all at ONE meal! And we make better choices in the ones we get - like brown rice, wholegrain or the darker breads like rye or pumpernickel, emphasis on the less starchy veggies, etc.

Rozzie, the Dinner Plate method is readily explained on his website (and a whole lot easier than those stinkin' blocks, LOL) - here's a quick link. http://www.drsears.com/gettingstartedinthezone.page
I took this thinking and ran with it - then just add in the snacks. THey have great recipe sections on his websites, too. Not sure what book you got, but I originally started out with "A Week In the Zone". It's a great beginner's book (and I'm pretty sure it has the dinner plate concept in there, too, along with a week or two's worth of menus.) Later I added a compound-book I found at Sam's that has "Mastering the Zone" and "Zone Meals in Minutes" combined. Once you read through some daily menus, you can readily see how with a few changes here and there, you could make oodles of different meals that would all nicely "fit the plan." Especially once you read through the "serving size" charts for all those fruits, veggies and carbs. I also like how, in the beginner book, he highlights what fast foods are still "Zonable". Like Wendy's chili - very Zonable! :p

Laura~ I wish I could make this smiley bigger  , just want you to know that you & your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm not sure if this is breaking any rules, so if I'm crossing a line, I apologize.... I just wanted to let my Nothingers know that next month Harry & I are participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Pt. Pleasant, NJ (we've done it every year for the past 5 years); if you would like to donate, please use the link in my signature. That will be the first & last time I ask for donations, I don't want anyone to feel pressured or harassed into donating (I hate it when people do that to me!). :flowerfor

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....

TALKING LOUDER FOR NONO!!! HI NONO! DO THE BIKES MAKE YOUR HOUSE SHAKE??? We go to Daytona every other year for the Turkey Rod Run Thanksgiving week.
