Maybe squirrels or raccoons? I know that's common around here in chimineys.
Sorry, no advice here but I do wish you luck!

A squirrel is what I thought too. Do you have a screen or door on your fireplace (in case it gets all the way down)?

Im kinda freaked to even open the flue (sp) at this point- Im going to have to have someone else do it- I would drop dead if something flies out of there or falls out into the fireplace- :holymoly:
How long will it take you to get here from Jersey Viking???? :D-

EEEK!!! RUN!!!
;)
Reminds of my mother - she's deaf; bought a new twisted fig tree and was very proud of it. For days she would water it, and noticed some movement but thought that she was just imagining it. One day she was watering it, and out popped a frog and hopped away across the dining room!!!! We think that it got into the trunk while small, grew a little bigger, and got stuck. She never heard it croaking - just saw the tree trembling!!!!
Good luck with that little visitor, and just hope that it's not a skunk!

The first time I try and be serious I get scolded.
I'm serious. Fill that chimney with smoke & heat and what ever is it WILL LEAVE.
Leave the flu closed till you have the log lite, bang the flu a few times, that may even scare out the critter, than open the flu & close your glass door or pull your screen closed.
jigger, I can do 1026 miles in 14.25 hrs. You tell me how long it would take to get to your place.

Probably is a squirrel but that would be NO fun in your house.
Even if you don't hear it again, I would have a professional company come out and take care of your chimney in case it built a nest in there that might block some of the smoke from going out. Could make it dangerous. They can also put a cap on it to keep out crittersin the future (or repair yours if you already had one and they broke through).
Don't think i would be opening that flue either!!! :jawdroppi
haha Bavaria!!! Nothing like a little friend with purchase!
(I have this image of the Griswalds, the squirrel and the Christmas tree at Laura's house right now! :lmbo: )
Good Luck!

I hope its a squirrel! Yes, the fireplace is screened in- I keep looking over at it expecting some little face to be peering at me-
One day she was watering it, and out popped a frog and hopped away across the dining room!!!!
:faint: I am frogophobic- (although I like Tony! :D) Now I will have nightmares thinking there are frogs in the chimney tonight

Ohhhh ddddear! We had a bat come down the fireplace and it was crazy! Here is my advice.... Run around and scream....Then go screamin outside and wake the neighbors. Send a brave soul in with a fishing net (this was my husband). Watch him from the window while he runs around and scream until it flys into a nook or cranny or out the window. We still dont know what happend to it. It isn't smelling yet so I assume it flew out the window. It has been two weeks and we are still lookin around for it.:ROTFL: Hope this helps!

QUICK!
Put the track with the song from IASWAA in your dvd and set to repeat track....then drive to the nearest Radison and book a week's stay....when you get back the intruder (along with most of your neighbors) will be gone! :p
On a more serious note- I'd either way a day (assuming this just started) to see if it left the way it got in, or try the patent pending viking smoke-a-way method

Not since the kids came home from school- Maybe that was enough to scare it away! :)
When things quiet down around here I am going to blare Small World, bang on the flu with a broom handle and then RUN outside to see if anything pops out the top of my chimney! ;) I am too much of a chicken to open the flu up and smoke it out- If it continues after tonight I will have to call someone to check it out- when I dont have any kids at home- :)

JJ, regardless of how you chose to handle the critter, don't wait too long. If it is still there this morning, it is either building a nest or it is trapped.
If it is building a nest, my BBQ Smoker method will fill your living room with smoke.
If it is trapped, it will eventually die. Than stink. Badly.

The ever cautious lllovell is still concerned about too much of your chimney already being blocked and smoke leaking back into your house. (I know you would notice a LOT of smoke...but maybe not a little bit) So please do be careful!
Have you called a chimney sweep company? They might refuse to come out but they might not and you should have your chimney cleaned periodically anyway.

All this NESTING stuff falls out! Had a fire in there about 2 weeks ago and all was well so he was a pretty new tenant in the chimney-

Oh Laura, it is a horrific tale. A momma bird put a nest in our chimney. Let's just say it was a horrific ending for a family of innocent beloved God created creatures. I was about 12 I guess, and it still haunts me. There is a old Native American proverb that says to able to enter heaven, every animal you encountered will be at the entrance of heaven, and will give account of the way you treated them. I hope the baby birds have forgiven me. :worried:
