View Full Version : One-bedroom for two people

Does anyone rent a one-bedroom unit just for two adults? When we first bought into DVC I calculated the points needed for two trips a year, one in a studio and a second trip in a one-bedroom unit.

Our first DVC trip last October was in a studio, and we did a two-bedroom unit with friends for a weekend this past May. I truly loved having the washer and dryer right outside the bedroom, and our friends used it and I used it. And although we didn't use the kitchen heavily, it was nice to have the extra space in the kitchen (as opposed to a kitchenette).

Should this be listed as my "guilty pleasure"? Does anyone else rent a one-bedroom unit for two people when it's not a special occasion? Or am I just plain spoiled?

I have not done that yet but, I would have no qualms doing that. It is nice having the extra space, especially if oyu just want to relax and enjoy the resort.

Most people say that once you have been in a 1 BR, you can never go back to a studio. You are not alone!

We've never done it. I'm afraid if we do we will be too spoiled to go back to a studio. :lmbo:

Yup. My upcoming trip in Oct is just the 2 of us and it will be in a 1 bdrm. I haven't stayed in a 1 bdrm at all yet, but being that it is his 1st ever trip, I wanted to ''wow'' him a little bit.

I am a point cheapie and probably wouldn't unless it was a chance for hubby and I to take a vacation alone...you know - in like 18 years or so :lmbo:

However, I certainly would if you enjoy the resort and are looking for more of a relaxed vacation!

I want our trips to be 8-10 nights (at least), or 2 good 1 week trips a year, so we don't have enough points to do all of that in a 1 BR. I'd like to, though. For me, it's the washer/dryer, the jacuzzi, and the time to truly relax. It will have to be for a time we won't mind skimping on the parks (maybe just half day visits). I think we'll ultimately add on points with a 1 BR in mind.

We do it for the king bed. We just don't sleep well in a queen. He's not sleeping well because he's being kicked or crowded out of the bed by me, and I'm not sleeping well because I'm consciously trying not to kick him or crowd him out of the bed.

I guess we could pull out the couch for one of us and sleep separately.

But... it really is awfully nice. It feels so luxurious to have all of that space, plus a kitchen and a whirlpool tub and a separate living room. And it's also nice that the hard-to-get dates or rooms are a little easier to get as one-bedrooms than as studios.

DW and I stayed in a One Bedroom for 3 nights on our first trip as members. We always get a 1B or larger when traveling with the kids (and often other family as well.) But in the future, if just DW and I go and the trip is 3 nights or less, I don't think I'd splurge on the 1B. Being without the W/D for a trip that short isn't a big deal, IMO. Four or more nights is probably the point at which I'd have to seriously consider a 1B. Of course, as young as the kids are it will probably be a long time before we take an extended trip without them. :)

Hi,

Mom & I have enough points for a one bedroom but have yet to use it for the full week yet. I use a wheelchair to get around so the one bedrooms are great. We do fine in a studio though. We won't be staying in a one bedroom until HH in May 07'! saving points!! HeHe!!

We will be staying in a 1 br on our Sept. trip. This will be our first time for just the two of us. We stayed in a 1 br in June at HHI, but my son, Dil and grandson were with us. We have now become part of the no more studios family. Since we usually go when it is lower points we have enough to stay 10 days in a 1 br.

Miss Snooty Snoot checking in! ;)

Yep, Mr Roz and I try to always do a 1BR. We stayed a week in a studio last Feb, and we were about to pull each others hair out. That's just us though. I love being able to spread out, and doing the laundry before we leave to go home. I also love being able to do a frozen pizza after a late night.

We actually added on just so we could have 2 weeks in a 1BR. We have found we are going more, so we are now might do 5 nights in a 1BR, a weekend on cash somewhere, just so we can have the 1BR. I always have a date with the jacuzzi and a nice book!

It is true, it's hard to downgrade from the 1BR. I am taking my mom in Nov and just us two girls, we'll be in a 1BR too. I can't wait to see her face!

If you ever truly want to be spoiled, try a OKW 1BR for two. Talk about space! :hyper:

We (DINKS) bought our points with the idea that we will always do a 1BR. We'll use a studio for a late-night arrival or an unexpected trip, I suppose. But, as it stands, we are spoiled by space, and don't want to give any up at all. What is it we always say: "Luxury pre-paid vacation"? Ding!

Absolutely!

Well, we've not actually stayed without the kids yet, but we've also never rented a studio except for a night on the way home at HHI. For me, its the w/d and not having to bring more than three days worth of clothes for a 10 day vacation. And the jacuzzi...:margarita

Nope. We seem to keep adding on in small increments and yet we're still only staying in studios! Matter of fact about a week ago I sat down with DH to go over next use year and he was like this is it? Well, I guess I could switch this one bedroom I had planned to a studio and we could get another trip in... Nope, looks like we'll never be in a one bedroom at this point! :sosad:
We'd obviously rather have a bunch of trips in the studio than less trips in a bigger unit!
I do plan on a two bedroom for the first time for VB with my parents, so I'll finally be breaking out of a studio for the first time next summer. :clappingh

No. Two reasons.

I am afraid we will never go back to a studio.

And we would rather do more trips/days then spend more points for less time.

I was afraid that once I went to a one bedroom or bigger that I wouldn't be able to go back. Guess what? I am actually the rare person that can go back and forth between a studio and one bedroom.
whgen I travel with family, I do a 2 bedroom and when I go with friends, we share a studio.

It's just the two of us. We got hooked on a one bedroom last trip. We had always stayed at a studio. Now we plan one big trip in a one bedroom, and the rest in a studio.
I love the laundry inside the room, and the full kitchen, as I like to make a few big breakfasts while on vacation.

If staying in a studio means you get to go again in a few months, or stay long this trip, then skip the 1BR.

If its a use, them or loose them (or even bank them), then go for it.

I have yet to stay in anything other than a studio, preferring to stretch my points, but boy do I covet thy neighbors 1BR villa.

I joined DVC to enjoy the larger accomodations and have a real Home Away from Home. Love the space, the full kitchen, washer/dryer, stall shower and adore the jacuzzi of 1BRs and larger. Unless it's a quick one or two day trip, even when I go alone I get a 1BR, when I bring kids or a friend we get a 2BR. I would rather stay a shorter time and enjoy what I consider more quality accomodations. I love my DVC!!:clappingh

we did 4 trips in studios, then a 2br.

haven't done a studio since. we actually added on so that we could always do one bedrooms. as for just two of us in a 1br? you betcha! (although with 2 very small kids i don't see this happening for awhile).

Once I got the taste of a 1 and 2 bedroom there was just no looking back- :snooty:

I am with Mar on this for sure- I would rather do shorter trips as well as more frequent trips and stay in a one or two bed than stay longer in a studio-

Exactly! We actually bought at Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas rather than Marrriot's Lahaina Villas (right next to Marriots Ocean Club) because their studio was too "hotel-ish."

It was smaller than a DVC studio and had fewer amenities.

OTOH, the studio at Westin is just chock-full-o'-stuff (including dishwasher, full fridge, stove top, microwave, washer/dryer, jacuzzi, large walk-in shower, stocked kitchen, etc.).

Now, if the DVC studios were a little more like the Westin studios, I'd probably be more inclined to stay in them and forgo the 1BR.

This is SO true. We've done 2 bedrooms every trip so far because we've invited friends/family (although our trip to HHI was just the 3 of us since "friends" backed out last minute). Now I start to look around and think the next trip I olan for just my family we may still get the 2 bedroom - then mommy will get the jacuzzi bathroom all to myself!!!!:D

We tried a studio for one night on our last trip due to flight schedules and it was nice, but I REALLY prefer the bathrooms in the larger units and I think I'd feel deprived if I had to do without for a long vacation. I can see the point for those who can take multiple trips, but with flight schedules and prices from here, that's not as likely to happen for us. I'm stuck with once every year to year and a half for the forseeable future.

We always stay in a 1 BR even though there's just two of us. Unfortunately, DH has a job where he can't take more than 1 week's vacation at a time, whether it's a studio or a 1 BR. We prefer the 1 BR for lots of reasons-the huge porch, 2 TVs (that way he can watch sports constantly and I can watch the DVC "propaganda" constantly), the laundry facilities, extra space (he says he needs the floor space to practice his putting), the king bed, and the jacuzzi tub.

I guess I let our small point contract make the decision. We did stay in an OKW 1 br for one night a year ago thanks to the generosity of Lisa S on those "other boards." (I told her about DVC at a DIS meet). And in January DD23 and I are celebrating her college graduation at OKW in a 1 br, but DH and I keep reserving studios for our twosome trips (I do laundry wherever it's available) and larger accomodations when we bring some of the offspring.

We are breaking new ground in April. I'm hoping to reserve a 2 bedroom at HHI for our April vacation. Gasp! DS17 is planning to bring a friend, and DS 26 might also join us. :jawdroppi That could be an interesting trip!

We usually have a 2 bedroom, because we usually have guests with us, but when it's just the two of us, we prefer a 1 bedroom to a studio because of the king beds, the space, the whirlpool, the kitchen, the laundry room, and at OKW the big porch/balcony. Since buying into DVC nearly 10 years ago, we have only stayed in a studio a few nights here and there. Sometimes to save weekend points during the higher point seasons, and sometimes as a place to stay when we are "passing through". We will be in a studio 1 night out of 12 in December.

We typically do 2 trips per year. DH and I in a studio for a week and 2 weeks with DSs 16&14 in a 2BR. I love the 2 BR with 4 so I can only imagine a 1BR for the 2 of us...DH and I are doing a short trip from 12/1 to 12/5 staying at VWL 2 nights in a studio and moving to a 1BR for the last 2...I'm afraid.....very afraid I won't want to go back to a studio.

I don't share a bed well with ANYONE.

so I prefer the studios with 2 queen beds at OKW.

when I take more than 2 people I generally get a 2-bedroom.

when I was younger and didn't mind the sleeper sofa so much - we had a 1-bedroom a couple of times.

but the older I get the more I want a REAL bed.

change my reservation this time from a standard view studio at BWV to OKW - to get those 2 beds....

When I'm there alone, a studio suite me just fine. When DW is along, she's ok with a studio for a few days, which is what we usually do before leaving for the weekend.. then we come back in a 1BR for a week. That said, I think she would not mind an extended stay at OKW in a studio at all..

Well, having just spent a single night in a studio the night before last, my previous opinion has been soldified: I'd opt to stay in a 1BR even if I was by myself. And I can't imagine staying in a studio with a family. Ugh. But then again, I'm very spoiled -- and very lucky.

SwampFox
10-02-2006, 01:02 AM
We usually opt for the 1BR for the two of us. As empty-nesters we usually are able to take trips of 10 days (including 4 weekend nites) - not the best use of our points, but well worth the "expense". We have only stayed in Studios a few times over the years and really enjoy the space, kitchen (mostly for breakfast), the washer/dryer (really cuts down on the luggage needed) and the jacuzzi.

While the studios are certainly nice, the 1BR villas really make the trips feel extra special to us. We get a 2BR when we have friends join us.

With our first trip home this November we will stay in a 1 bedroom. The last three trips we've taken to the World, we have stayed at other off site resorts. And we have always brought other family members or friends. The last trip we brought the DW's whole family and stayed in three - three bedroom units. It was quite a production. Which is why I am happy that we are DVC members, we can't afford to bring twenty other people with us. :innocent: So this trip it will be me the DW and the DD6 celebrating our tenth anniversary :loveisint and her becoming our DD7.:birthdayc So even though we are stepping down in square footage, we are stepping up in style and privacy :woohoo:

Love studios - but I like to go to WDW often!!!!

stay at OKW or SSR - the washer/dryer are at the swimming pool. So go swimming while you are washing your clothes - not a big deal for me.

now even worst when I travel with 3 people - I get a 2-bedroom. I feel strange sharing a bathroom. Isn't that down right silly!!!

So I try to get 2 studios, hopefully not on the same floor, or worse, above her room.

She feels that is not very 'family' like, so we'd been getting 2 Bedroom units.

Now, I'm trying our first GV, so I can get some sleep on vacation!

I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only DW who snores so loudly! I'll bet DH would agree with you totally. I have no DH presently, only an ex H. He didn't mind my snoring, but it drives my kids batty. The first time I rented DVC points was so they didn't have to share the room with me. (We got a 1BR). Prior to that we were Poly nuts.

I had only stayed in a studio until my trip in Sept. '05 when I took my DBF to WDW for his first trip ever. I wanted him to really be wowed so that he would want to visit again in the future, so I booked the 1 BR which was great. I loved being able to do laundry without spending the time babysitting it (throw a load in the washer in the morning, throw it in the dryer when we came back in the evening). The kitchen and the space in general is great. That being said, I don't have enough points to go to WDW as often as I want AND stay in a 1 br. My plan to wow DBF was successful because he wanted to come with me on my trip in Oct. '06. But that time we were in a studio, which I warned him about. It was all fine and I really like the studios at SSR, but my plan is to eventually add-on so that I can take the same number of trips as I do now but in a 1 BR.

Warning! Do NOT stay in anything but a studio...if you do you will never go back. We were tainted when we stayed at HHI and were upgraded to a 2BR from a studio and with three people it was soooooo nice.

In June we went back to a studio and YUCK - I missed my washer and dryer and big bathroom. And the new AKV 1 Br with 2 bathrooms will b so cool.

I need more points.

I've stayed at a 1 bdrm when we were booking too late and couldn't get a studio. It is really lovely with 2 people, although certainly not needed.

If money is an issue, but not an overwhelming issue, you might want to do some trips in 1-bdrms and some in studios. I would suggest planning your trip and accommodations around each other - i.e. when you stay in a 1-bdrm, get some food and wine and cook for yourselves, bring books, and hang out at the resort and swim, or spend a few hours at DTD or golfing. But when you stay in studios, plan to be park commandos and eat out a lot.

DW and I like both kinds of vacations at WDW, but I wouldn't spend the points on the 1 bdrm if we were planning to spend most/all of every day in the parks.

I would definitely stay in a 1BR with just the two of us! The extra living space is great, especially if you are staying for several days. Our favorite resort is OKW and I don't like having two beds in the room and no couch. We enjoy down time at the resort so much and it feels much more like a " home away from home" in a larger unit.

We also love the large bathroom, the large patio or balcony, the washer/dryer right in the room, the kitchen for breakfast and snacks, etc. The list goes on and on.

If you can afford to use the points I would GO FOR IT!

As stated earlier, this is especially true if you are going to spend time at the resort to relax and not hitting the parks everyday.

Call me spoiled, but I bought into our RESORTS to enjoy a little luxury. I have no intention of ever staying in a studio; I get enough of that at hotels and motels.

I say then you may miss out at some Resorts. We love the studio INN rooms at VERO facing the water. I like them better then the other accomodations there. Obviously there are advantages to more space, but I do not rule out studios just because of size. they can be great for a get away. IMHO

Four times I have rented points from a DVC member, and rented the one bedroom BWV unit. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love the one bedroom unit.
AND ..... all those times I have been SOLO ..... DH stayed home with the cats.
This coming December I will have a BCV - Studio. I got the studio on a cash reservation - From Disney - on that 40% discount. I know that I have been spoiled by that one bedroom. So I did the math ! For my stay of six nights -
CASH RESERVATION ..... at the 40% discount ... It will cost me an extra $ 445.50
just to go from the studio, to the one bedroom. When I think of the money involved, I think I will stick with the studio - unless I got a few thousand on the lottery. But ..... At least I'm still going to Disney World !!!!

We are a family of three for a few more years now. But once our son heads off to college, we'll continue to stay in a one bedroom. I prefer the king sized bed and I like the easy access to the washer and dryer. We seldom stay in studios.

the first time we were at the bwv there were 4 of us in a 1 bedroom villa and a studio. (thought more were going with us). it was wonderful. love the giant bathroom with whirlpool. nect trip was the same 4 people (again more were suppose to come with)( unlucky them) we were at okw in a 2 bedroom. what a wonderful place to relax. now were are truely spoiled and wouldn't think of a studio for the 2 of us. love that space and then to be able to only bring a carry on with and wash a load of clothes is not a big deal. sure saves time at the airport so we can start our vacation right away.

When we travel to Disney in Fl we always stay in 1 Bedroom, just wifey an I, When we have friends stay over we rent a 2 bedroom, so they can have privacy.

We have only stayed in a studio once or twice. Christmas we had a 1 bedroom at OKW, and had friends on the pullout. Thats all we could get, considering we book trip in August of 2007 for first week of Dec 2007.

I don't see any problem with it. I'm a single person and I would have no qualms with staying in a one-bedroom. I booked a studio in SSR for my stay in May, but am considering a one-bedroom for my next stay (December).

DH and I always get a 1 BR for the two of us. We love having all the space of a 1 BR and the washer/dryer, like someone else stated, less luggage and no babysitting the washer/dryer. I will throw a load in the washer before we leave for the park and put it in the dryer when we get back... also no dirty clothes on the trip home.

Stayed once in BCV studio, not too bad, and once in OKW studio - DH didn't like having 2 beds and no sofa or loveseat to sit on at OKW, he doesn't like sitting on the bed to watch tv or relax. OK we're spoiled.

For our trip in May we have a 2 BR at BWV for 4, DS and future DIL are going with us. Can't wait, he's planning to propose while at WDW. :jawdroppi She has no idea. :woohoodan

Ye, until I got married, I always stayed in a Grand Villa at OKW! I always brought my brother, his partner, my sister, her husband, my son and a friend or cousin for him to have for fun. It was great. New husband does not like group trips so we have had 4 trips so far this year, each one in a studio. Not nearly as nice and not nearly as much fun for me.

I like having the extra room and the extra company.

But I would love to have just the extra room for the two of us. He is more conservative about point use than I am. He is still trying to maximize everything. I just do not believe that that is the right way to think about vacation. I would rather have one really nice, relaxing vacation than 5 short, cramped ones. I am hoping by letting him experiment with the studios that he will come around to my way of thinking. :crowded:

Talk about "guilty pleasures". I do 1 bdrm's all the time. I go solo yearly along with a/t family trips and have never yet stayed in a studio.
Guess its my reward to ME !!:clappingh No..I don't have a zillion pts...but it works!!
My May SOLO trip will be 5 nights @ the Poly Con. (cash, with 40% AP discount) and 10 nights "home".:beatinghe

my DH always insists on a 1 BR when we go for a long weekend alone. We're thinking of taking the 2 grandchildren and I don't think the 1 BR is the best choice. I think I might want a studio! They are 8 & 12, don't know about sleeping in the LR, seems like a nuisance. Any advice? Other trips with family have been with bigger groups.

We've always stayed in studios til this past Dec. We stayed in a 2bdr with friends and that extra room was great. We're getting a 1bdr @ BWV in May(it was all they had and we really want to stay there) We're getting a car so we'll probably shop and get some use out of the kitchen. I'm afraid that we may not go back to studios afterward.

Nope, not spoiled, just sensible. We are still a family of three (son in HS), but we are already planning those trips when he heads to college for just the two of us. We'll get a one bedroom because we like the king sized bed, the washer and dryer and the kitchen (if we decide to cook or heat up something).

i saved enough points for a week at AK sv before they opened dvc part of resort. 2 month before we were to arrive disney called and told us our room wouldn`t be available. made reservation 11 month in advanced. they offered pool veiw. i made a big fuss asked for a manager then i was put on hold. when they retured they offered us a 1 bedroomat AK sv in the dvc. we went from using 416 to256 points. we were the first couple to stay in that room. when we got back home we bought more points because i bed room is the way to go.

I agree with some of the other respondents, once you've enjoyed the space and accomadations of the one bedroom, you don't want to go to a studio.
It all depends on your priorities, spend time in room or time in parks. While we don't spend a lot of time in the one bedroom, it is very nice to enjoy the features, if you can justify the points.:jester:

More clothes to bring (no laundry), no where to get away from DH when he is snoring, no where to find a cozy place to read when DH has ESPN blasting. No jacuzzi, no oven to warm up a pizza after a late night at Jelly's. No room to spread out and read the Sunday paper while enjoying a hot breakfast, no adequate poker table, etc etc etc. :slyasafox

To each their own! I bought DVC for the 1BR, it's what sold the deal for us. The bad part is it has spoiled us. We will do a studio for quick trips, or for the weekend before checkin. Those weekend night's are killer in a 1BR.

i understand that Roz, funny to me one of the things I notice when we looked at DVC was the option to have a smaller room. so we can have more vacations. No doubt about it, 1 bedrooms and up have advantages, but SO DOES THE STUDIOS!!!:box:

I am in complete agreement with you Rozze, but as time goes on and your vacation time increases, can you concede that a studio may be more apealing?

We joined in December 2005 purchasing a lot of points. We stay at least one week a month from Setpember to March with two weeks at Christmas and a few shorter trips during the summer. We enjoy leisurely stays at WDW, no longer being park commandos. We do a lot of relaxing at the resort and love being within walking distance of DTD.

There are just 2 of us. Our first DVC trip was at a 1-BR at OKW. After all that space, we got spoiled. We tried studios but just felt they were two "cramped". We enjoy having a bedroom with a seperate living room, the washer/dryer, the full kitchen and the whirlpool tub.

I would like the studio if they had a king bed....we just don't like a queen bed anymore!
We were spoiled long before we were DVC members...

We had a trip planned 9/15/01 to Wilderness Lodge in a regular hotel room.
Our flight was cancelled after the 9/11 attacks and flight not available until 9/17/01 I believe. We had to adjust our ressie and Disney was very good about it just like you've heard around that time.
We then got a message from Wilderness Lodge day before we left.....

" We have a problem with your reservation....." Uh-oh.

"We may have to move you....." Uh-oh.

"......to a villa." Uh....wait, that's good, right?!

We still think they upgraded us to make sure we came.....little did they know we were such Disney nuts we were coming terrorists or not.
They put us in a 1 bdrm villa!

And we were spoiled from then on......I am kicking myself for not buying DVC in 2001 and we waited to buy in 2005.

I like the laundry in the the room, the king bed, the extra room. It looks like every other year we can do a 1 bdrm and the next year a studio.
This year is a BWV 1 bdrm for F & W!

To date, we have only stayed in 1BR or 2BR units using our points. However... a few weeks ago I was on a biz trip to Orlando... and I chose to stay in WDW for cash rather than stay at the conference hotel. I had to be cost concious, and not spend more for my WDW hotel than if I had stayed at the conference hotel (~$200/night). My thought was that since DW was joining me... she would enjoy being at WDW while I was working rather than being at a conference hotel.

We ended up staying in SSR studio for 9 nights. Most of the time I was sick :( ...

This trip really confirmed the fact that we do not want to stay in studios if at all possible. Of course... sometimes availabily (of points, or units) will dictate the choice... but our preference will always be a 1BR for the two of us.

Our DVC experience continues to evolve, so I'm not sure what our preferences will look like in five years. When we first joined DVC in Dec 06, we stayed several times at SSR and OKW in studio accomations. We found the studios to be comparable to staying at a hotel, the only drawback was the one queen size bed at SSR. In Oct 07 we stayed in a 3-BR at SSR for six adults which may have been too much room, but it was nice.

This past April, DW and I were planning on visiting the Epcot F&G festival and we had reserved a studio at OKW, but about month after making the reservation, DW invited her friend to join us. I didnt think a studio would be adequate for three adults so I called and changed the reservation to a 1-BR, the only location available when I called was SSR.

We enjoyed the 1-BR, but DW and I decided that if it is just the two of us, the 1-BR might be too large. Having access to the kitchen is nice, and if we were staying longer than a week, I can see where the kitchen is a must. But if we are doing Disney for our usual week visit, we end up visiting too many restaurants to allow us to settle in and do any real cooking.

I concede that I am going against the grain, and a studio would be better for us on a short trip.

I can say that we prefer the studio at SSR better for the strangest reason. At OKW, you have two beds available but no place to really sit and lounge, while at SSR, there is a pull out sofa, where you can sit and relax.
