I didn't see this on here, maybe I'm missing it?
On the "other" board someone posted a permit for model rooms to be built at AKL by DVC! Looks pretty interesting to me!
I apologize if I'm repeating the news!
SNAP! How are we gonna choose between AKL and the Contemporary if they do indeed get a waterpark? SNAP! I need to seriously win the lottery...

Shannon, it was posted earlier, see thread #42 of the Contemporary thread. I am not sure how to post a link to a specific thread. Somehow it has not created near the stir as the Contemporary info. It does make me wonder, if there will be models in the Contemporary, too.

Thanks! Wonder why nobody is interested in this as well?!? :scratchch
I wonder if there are permits for building near AKL? Seems if they were putting in DVC models they'd also have some sort of construction starting to form??? :reporter:

I can't speak for anyone else, but for us, even though we like to visit the AKL, we don't have any desire to stay there. It seems to far from everything, except for the AK and US 192. So, having DVC at the AKL just doesn't do the same thing for me.
Also, I am betting some architect's drawings might draw up some interest.

I admit that Animal Kingdom Lodge is spectacular, but it's just not my style. However, if a DVC were built at AKL I would want to stay there at least once.

I'd pass on CR and go all the way for AKL. :howudoin:
Rozzie,
Does that mean I have to do two add-ons????::headscrat

I think this rumour has had less play because it is completely unsubstantiated, whereas the CR DVC drawings were on a reputed architectural website.

It's a VAKL add-on for me for sure! I'll leave the VCR points to anyone else who wants them!
Love the AKL!

Well see, my plan is that when Rozzie buys AKL, I can stay with her there, and then she can come stay with me at CRV. That way I get to stay at both resorts.
A couple of things I have thought about, wouldn't you hate to be staying at the Contemporary Resort while all this construction is going on. The noise will be bad enough, but the mess and dust and construction traffic will be a pain, too.
Also, I wonder how much this will free up BCV and WLV when the CRV rooms open. Funny, that I guess I feel this is already a done deal and have to keep telling myself there has been no announcement yet.

I found the website of the architectural firm that designed AKL (and Wilderness Lodge and Grand Californian Hotel too). There's no mention on their website about an AKL DVC.
4240 Architecture (http://www.4240architecture.com/)
BTW, if you use their search function and search on "Animal Kingdom" you can learn some interesting facts about the Lodge design, and see some pretty spectacular pictures.

I wonder if there are permits for building near AKL? Seems if they were putting in DVC models they'd also have some sort of construction starting to form??? :reporter:Shan; I would expect that they would not so much add-on all that much to the existing AKL structure. There is just not that much land available to do it, according to the aerial photos I have seen of the area. What I would expect would be that they would convert one side of the AKL (maybe the Kudu trail and the smaller trail (is that Ostrich or Giraffe on that side?) into DVC units. It's interesting that AKL always seems to be offered in the periodic room discounts, which tells me that they are not filling it all that much. A partial DVC conversion would take this oft-unused inventory and sell it off to us timeshare folks who will love it, or at least keep it filled enough so that our points don't go unused. They may be able to add on at the end of the smaller side trail (not Kudu, since that just out into the savannah).
...at least that's my theory...

If by chance the DVC at AKL happens, we will be there in a flash. Contemporary is not our 'thing' but AKL is for sure. Only thing is living in Nova Scotia, we will need to fly there to sign up. Oh well, just another excuse :jumpingbe
The one thing I will mention is that the front desk staff may need to come up to Disney standards if this does happen. Both times I have stayed at AKL the front desk staff have been unfriendly, rude and impatient. ALL other staff, especially the guides, have been some of the best on site for sure. Don't know what the front desk staff problem is. Could be the manager. We've experienced better service at all other levels, including value!

I am much more excited about a potential VAKL resort than the CVR resort. I think that VAKL would be an instant add-on.

[QUOTE=RweTHEREyet] It seems to far from everything, except for the AK and US 192.
My Mom and Dad "snowbirded" to a place off 192, so a VAKL option would be nice for those trip we plan on spending more "Grandma and Grandpa time." Not that the extra 5 minute drive to the BoardWalk actually is a burden...
We've never stayed at AKL, but have talked a few times about staying there on points---the math just doesn't support that option, IMHO.
Probably Contemp for us... Guess we'll see. Would live to have the option.
Somehow, though, I'm note sure model rooms equals an actual development at the AKL. Could be that the planned CRV will be so big that they want to have sales sites at each of the Deluxe hotels.

An engineer with Disney who is very, very reliable posted on the Rec.Arts.Disney.Parks usenet newsgroup awhile back that land is set aside at AKL and every other Deluxe and Moderate resort for DVC. I'm not sure where it's supposed to be built at AKL, but it's not an add-on to the existing building as I recall. Of course, all plans are subject to change.
Dirk
I had read that a while back then searched for it again. She indicated it would be a building that was between the bus stop and feature pool.
It was in a thread dealing with the why nots of pool hopping to AKL ...
In 1998, the DVC submitted plans to the WDW Company that would allow
them rights to 'land, facilities and concessions' at each of the WDW
resorts, past and future, in order to expand the DVC business. So far,
the results have been in the form of WLV and BCV. AKL was designed with
this in mind (and if you look around you can see exactly where the AKLV
will go).
The rights of a DVC member with regard to WDW property usage is a very complex issue (sometimes the decisions concerning DVC discounts suffer because of this) and the pool usage issue is no exception. In the case of any resort that becomes a host to a DVC property, that resort gains the right to limit the pool usage provision to only those staying at that resort's DVC property (although the resort loses the right to demand that the guests staying at the DVC property be members of the DVC and/or use points for their stay).
WLV chose not to enforce the provision and so DVC members can still ‘hop on over' and use the pools (but must be staying at a DVC resort using points). BCV chose to enforce the provision for obvious reasons.
AKL also chose to enforce the provision because of the fear that the guest experience would be ruined by 'inviting' all the DVC members over to swim (they already knew that the resort would see a larger-than-normal share of curious, non-AKL guests).
AKL could do this because the DVC had already purchased their piece of the resort property - with full expectation of building right away - even though the actual building and quiet pool haven't yet materialized.
If the DVC continues to sell as well as it has so far, we'll see a DVC Villas building at every resort by the end of phase 4 (2039)!!
Boom
And later when questioned she added....
Between the bus stop and the feature pool, as pointed out by others..
Boy, you guys are quick !!
About the GF, Poly and CR...
At the GF and Poly, the odds are that the DVC would purchase an already
existing building although plans have also been filed that might have
the DVC build a new building in the GF parking lot, just across the
monorail from the main entrance and in place of the luau show building
at the Poly.
At the CR, the building would be north of the north wing, the long side
facing Bay Lake (with it's own beach). Nobody really uses the tennis
courts anyway...
Another tidbit...
The AKL situation has been talked about in the press, so I feel safe
talking about it here. There is one other property in a similar
situation but I'll have to keep my mouth shut about which.

boy, Lisa - you're good with the Google Groups search!
Actually, Admiral Boom, the source of the information, is a woman, believe it or not. Disney explosives expert, too. She loves to blow things up.

Lisa, I wonder what resort she was reffering to!
I've wondered about that quote too. First, I think it is refering to DVD actually owning a part of the resort like they do at AKL and ready to build. I could have interpret that wrong but that's what I was thinking. So, what resorts have been planned after DVD was smart enough to purchase part of it? Anyone have dates? I found a list when I was looking at that quote but can't find it now.
Also Sammie on the other board made this comment:
I have no interest of this location either. I find the AKL location more appealing. Heard a new comment from a Disney management CM today that the AKL villas will happen before the Contemporary and they will be built to the left of the existing resort.
Sammie has come good connections so I weight the information fairly heavily.
They could be doing both building a seperate structure and reconfiguring some of the deluxe 5th (and possibly 6th) floor rooms.
This is a different side than what Admiral Boom on RADP had indicated had been planned ....but plans change.

Well, this is a fast-moving busness. Could be the recent airline threat reminded Disney of the pain they experienced in 2001 and 2002 and they may lean toward a smaller project.
Again, could also all be a smokescreen:confused:
