Went to tickerfactory.com - followed the instructions - the following code was generated - I pasted into my signature but all that came up was the text (after saving) and not the ticker...

What have I missed?

After you create the ticker, you are presented with three different coding options: bbCode, HTML and ezCode. It looks like you tried to use the ezCode info. The one that you should be using is bbCode.

It looks like you can take off everything before and after then replace "image noborder" with "img" and "/image" with "/img". tjkraz's way may be easier.
