The Shack

by The Bad Poet

Come sit right down and here a tale,
A tale from a poet hack.
The tome of a toon and a big monsoon,
That’s put me in The Shack.

The Shack is the place that I call home,
For months it’s been my lodge.
An air mattress and congo drums,
In my dear inlaws’ garage.

The weather started turning rough.
A storm they called Katrina,
Was headed for the Big Easy,
Like an oversized hyena.

We had to leave in such a rush,
To get out of harm’s way.
We didn’t think that we’d be gone,
For much more than a day.

The inlaws’ said to come on by,
In Florida we would hide.
My family now safe except,
This Toon must stay outside.

You see, I have an allergy,
A very bad reaction.
6 cats that live under their roof,
Are a Toon’s fatal attraction.

I watched the news in disbelief,
My city washed away.
I cried the night New Orleans died,
So here I have to stay.

My house, my car, my boat, my job,
My Mickey underwear,
All wet but that’s stuff I can fix,
So no need to despair.

And then the other anvil fell,
A blow much worse than any.
I cried the night my sister died,
I miss you, my sweet Penny.

But with the help of “special” friends,
This Toon is bouncing back.
I’m drawing up a whole new life,
So I can leave the Shack.

The Shack, it’s really not so bad,
At night the kids come knockin’.
With music playing all night long,
We keep the place a ’rockin’.

So if you’re headed South sometime,
Drop in and we’ll kick back.
I’ll leave the light on so you’ll know,
The Toon is in the Shack!

Oh, Toon, it's good to have you back. I echo everything MP said, I'm so sorry for what you've been through, but your attitude is amazing. Keep writing - they make me smile.

It's been quite a few months for you Toon, your ability to laugh in the face of all that turmoil is truly amazing and wonderful.
And you are truly the King of bad poems! :king:

Hail to thee BAD POET! :worship:

It's good to have you back! It's hard to imagine what you've been through in the last few months. I'm so proud of you, that you can grieve for your city and your sister and yet keep smiling and looking forward through it all.

How are the kids doing in their new school? How is the new job? How is Mrs. Toon dealing with the cats and The Shack?

Sending you big hugs :grouphug:
and pixie dust :dust :wizard:

Got any Yeunglings in that Shack?

If I were living with my in-laws, I would be much happier in "the shack" than inside and its probably the only place for privacy with the spousal unit IFKWIM :hammer:

Its good to see you around Toon. *biggest hug I can send you* Glad to see you hanging in there.

Tell me what size, and I will replace those Mickey undies in December ;)

Thanks for all the kind words. The kids are doing fine in their new school. I haven't changed jobs, but as a financial advisor there's not much to be done in N.O. so I'm trying to develop my practice over here. The Mrs. is doing fine with the cats - she loves them. But she and the kids have a room in the house, so it's just me and my box of Kleenex in the Shack (for my allergies of course...). There's actually another family of four from N.O. living in a bedroom in the house as well. Fortunately it's a huge house and they're good friends of ours. It does allow me some solitude, but on the other hand I often feel like Uncle Orville out here with people coming and going. "No privacy around here!"

Are you sure these "special" friends have nothing to do with that box of tissues? Hmmmm.... http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_2_27.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZZzebXXX)

OK - so I was all ready to be kind and sympathetic,,,,, some of your posts were so wonderful.... and then I get to the last one.....I almost spit out the pizza I was eating! But thanks for the laugh!

Really, though - it is good to see your poems here. Hopefully you'll have nothing more sad to write about for a long time.
Keep us posted.....

Hey Toon, thanks for checking in and letting us know about life in the shack. Also I extend my condolences on the passing of your sister. Must be really difficult to add this pain on top of all else.

Maybe we can arrange for Goofy to give you a visit...

When the going gets tough and you're life's a dizzy whirl,
There's just one thing to do, so we're going to Disneyworld!
I'm a local here now and got a Florida Resident Rate,
At Caribbean Beach Resort, and I really cannot wait!

We will be there from the 15th through the 19th of December.
Sharing Christmas joy with Mickey! That is something to remember!
We will save a lot of dough with our Florida season pass.
Yop, our Christmas trip to Disney's gonna be a kick in the astro orbiter. :bouncegoo
