Woman Passes Out After Disney Ride

ORLANDO, Florida (July 11) - A woman lost consciousness while getting off a Walt Disney World ride, which two people have died on in the past 13 months, authorities said.

The 35-year-old woman was getting off "Mission: Space" when she fell about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Deputy Chief Bo Jones of the Reedy Creek Fire Department told the Orlando Sentinel.

She told rescue workers she had tingling in her arms and hands, Jones said. She was taken by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition.

The woman's name has not been released.

A telephone call by The Associated Press to Disney officials was not immediately returned Tuesday morning.

"Mission: Space" spins in a centrifuge that subjects riders to twice the normal force of gravity.

Hiltrud Bluemel, 49, died April 12, one day after she went on the ride. A preliminary report from the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office showed Bluemel died from bleeding of the brain. She also suffered from severe, long standing high blood pressure, according to the medical examiner's office.

A 4-year-old Pennsylvania boy also died last June while riding the attraction. An autopsy determined Daudi Bamuwamye, of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, died of an irregular heartbeat linked to a natural causes.

sounds like it could be TIA or a stroke. Or cardiac again.

Hopefully this latest woman will be okay and make a full recovery. Thanks for the news.

Hey Stimp, I think I will be riding the weanie side while you ride the big kid side in August. I am getting motion sick thinking about it!

Oh nooooo.....I'm perfectly happy to ride the "less intense" version! DS and I did it in May and it was much better.

I noticed in the article they didn't mention both versions. I assume she rode the more intense, but just found it interesting that they didn't even mention 2 versions available now.

Here's the version I first got from Tag.

A 35-year-old woman fell and lost consciousness after getting off Mission: Space at Epcot on Monday night.

The woman, who was described only as a "local," was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center by the hospital's helicopter.

About 8:30 p.m., she was getting off the ride when she "fell from a standing position," hit her head and was briefly unconscious, said Deputy Chief Bo Jones of the Reedy Creek Fire Department.

By the time rescue-crew members arrived, the woman had regained consciousness but was not completely alert and reported tingling in her arms and hands, Jones said.

To get her to the hospital quickly, an ORMC helicopter landed in a backstage area of Epcot.

She was taken in "stable, improving condition," Jones said, adding that rescue workers reported she had become more alert and had more sensation in her arms and hands as she was being taken to the hospital.

Sounds to me like she just got dizzy adn fell. She was realeased last night, so it was not anything serious.

This is just aweful, so many people getting sick/dead. Disney warns people of the risk. People just don't listen. Hope the latest lady is OK.

For you guys worrying about motion sickness, if you follow Disney's directions, you should be OK. No heart problems or blood pressure problems. No back problems. Keep your head forward at all times. DH has horrible motion sickness. Dumbo makes him hurl. He did MS without dramamine!!! I thought he was crazy for trying:headbange but he was OK. He said that as long as you keep your head straight, a cool breeze blows right into your face. It keeps the nausea at bay.

According to our Dr., there are two types of Motion sickness. (I'm not a Dr., just repeating what I was told.) The first, and worst, is caused by an inner ear imbalance. This is what can typically cause vertigo even when you are standing still. It is not common, but can really throw you for a loop. The more common one is caused by your eyes giving your brain wierd signals because it sees things moving in an unnatural way, ie. spinning rides, simulator rides, riding in the back seat of the car, reading while in a car, etc.

The second type is what DH suffers from. He says MS did not affect him because his eyes did not know he was spinning. The screen in front of you shows a fairly stationary image. You feel like you are going up, being pushed against your seat, rather than feeling like you are spinning. He was fine, although by the third trip in a row, he was ready for Universe of Energy.

oh Niki, believe me---I tried very hard not to get sick when I rode it. Never moved my neck, followed all the instructions to a tee. Same with DH. But we were doomed to get ill. Actually Mr. Rozzie got so sick, that he almost had to leave the park! I just sat down on a bench for 30 min and stared off into space, then it passed. Mr. Rozzie can't even walk by M:S now without getting a sick feeling, bless his heart! :o

Sorry to hear that Rozzie. DH and I love the "full throttle" version of this one.

Nikki, I really liked your explanations of the different kinds of motion sickness.

I haven't been able to do spin rides for about 20 years now, tho I loved them when I was kid. I tried MS with tredidation...the first time, I felt a little 'sleepy' and let my eyes close for just a sec on the ride. I didn't really get nauseous or anything, but felt somewhat uncomfortable for about 30 minutes after.

THe next time I followed the directions (do you think they were posted from the start...my first ride was before it officially opened?) and kept my head straight and my eyes open....and that really made a diff!!!! From what you wrote...my eyes didn't 'think' that they were spinning, so they told my brain everything was ok.

I still think that I will do the non-spinning version from now on...I've experienced the ride enough times (10) and there's no sense to 'risk' a little bleed in the brain:tilt: . I'm good with the memory!

I get motion sick very easily - even riding shotgun . Tea Cups are out of the question! Mission Space got me a tiny bit "off" - not as bad as the tea cups for sure! But it did induce a migraine!
Anyway - I actually get tingling in my arms and legs when I get a bit motion sick - so the lady that fell could have been feeling dizzy and sick from the ride and just lost it. I've have also had minor tunnel vision moments when I've gotten really sick. So it could all be just that - falling just made it obvious.

I've always gotten really bad motion sickness. Simulators in general (Star Tours, Body Wars, Back to the Future at Universal) are much worse for me than rides that really move you a lot like roller coasters (which I love), and MS is the worst of the lot. I have actually had to lie down on the park bench outside afterwards, get a drink, etc. before I can move on. The other simulators just make me nauseous and walk crooked right after I get off them.

So, I've sworn off all simulators, actually, though I'm going to give the tamed down version of MS a shot! I'm not sure that's going to do it, though, since on top of the spinning, I think the staring at a screen while being moved around (just like all the other simulators) really affects me.
