Cars was really great. I can't believe the NYTimes trashed it for not having a hybrid vehicle or being environmentlaly conscious (clearly showing the reviewer didn't sit through the credits).
I really find myself cheering and getting choked up at certain points. May have to forgo Disney next summer and tour the Southwest. Nah - gotta figure out how to do both!!!

We just got back!!! It was great. I tried to enjoy the movie but also look for the little things that Pixar hides in there.
Obvious was the dinoco that was the Gas Station in toy story, otherwise I didn't find anything else.
I really hope Disney/Pixar (or whatever they will be called now that Disney owns them) will put out more movies like this.
Did see a preview for a Meet the Robinsons movie put out by Disney that is to open next summer. Kind of mixed feelings on it just by seeing the reviews.
I will have to get this on DVD.

I agree about Meet the Robinsons. It just didn't have a Disney feel to it, and I'm not even sure I know what it's about. However, that Ratatouille trailer for the next Pixar film (next summer), really looks great. It's going to take a couple of years for Disney animation to get back on track with the Lassiter infusion, but at least the Pixar division will keep things rolling.
There was also a trailor for a Columbia pictures animated film. It definitely looked infeior in story and quality to anything Pixar or Dreamworks has done (even most of Disney). I'm just amazed at how Pixar leads the pack and consistently keeps quality high. Cars proves they'll be 7/7, and Ratatouille may well make them 8/8.

Really? What reviews would those be that were written 10 mos before the release date?!?!
The last 3-4 Pixar films had had mediocre-to-bad pre-release buzz and mostly baaaaaaaad teasers & trailers. I mean stinko!
The Ratatouille trailer was...OK. Sure it looked great and I got one hearty laugh out of it, but it didn't really do anything to tell me about the film. If you exclude the hardcore Disney faithful who will go see anything with the Pixar name, what did that trailer do to earn business? It's set in Paris and has to do with a rat living in a restaurant who has a taste for good food. Ooooookaaaaay. Then what?
I'm not saying Pixar needs to give away the goods in the trailer, but at least give us SOME sense of what the plot might be. Trailers for Cars started appearing at least 12 mos ago (probably longer since it was originally supposed to be out in November '05). Honestly, how long ago did you finally realize that the plot was 'Doc Hollywood with cars'? A month, maybe two?
It's hard to complain about it now because 'Cars' has been EVERYWHERE for the last 4-6 weeks. Clearly Disney knows how to market these films.
In the end, I guess my point is that making viewing decisions based solely on trailers produced 6-12 mos before a film's release date is crazy. There was zero "Disney feel" to the first trailer for 'Cars'--remember the one where Lightning McQueen swallows the bug while driving, Mater says "Dag Gum"....and that's about it. None of us would have been sitting in theaters today for 'Cars' if THAT was our sole basis for choosing Friday night summer viewing.
For what it's worth, Meet the Robinsons is an adaptation of James Joyce's (Rolie Polie Olie, Robots) work of juvenile fiction called "A Day with Wilbur Robinson." I've been told it's quite a well-respected book.
As far as in-jokes go in 'Cars', there were the tires named after our favorite Space Ranger. During the montage leading up to the final race there was a shot of a town in CA where the signage clearly indicated "Emeryville" which is where Pixar's headquarters is located. That scene also included a very quick shot of 4-5 cars huddled around a TV. I'm guessing those cars were modeled after noteworthy folk at Pixar--guys like Lassiter, Jobs and the late Joe Ranft--but it was too quick to be certain.
I hope everyone stuck around for the credits...right up to the end. I'll stop short of saying it was the best part of the film, but it was certainly the part at which I laughed loudest.
Now here's the real in-joke question--did anyone catch the HUGE in-joke during the Meet The Robinson's trailer?

Sorry, that was a typo, :headbrick it should say previews. I had mixed feelings on it based on the previews.

I was reading some reviews on IMDB, and one person said there was a scene where Lightning McQueen and Mater went tractor tipping. He said everyone in the theater cracked up.
And another person said to make sure to stay and watch the closing credits.

Wow - I didn't realize a cheerful upbeat opinion on based on a preview (for Rattoutille) could provoke such a strong response! LOL. Yep, it could be a stinko - I just had a very subjective feeling that it wouldn't be.
I also felt fairly positive on cars when I saw the first preview. Curious, uninformed, but positive. I guess I trust Pixar. Given the nature of animation, though, it's going to be awhile before they can get more out for the public to see, I imagine. Also, it's part of the build-up. A little tease here, a little tease there, and then a clearer picture as we get closer.
Thanks for the heads-up on Meet the Robinsons, regarding its source. That's the one I want to hold judgment on, but I was more curious because it was Disney than from the content of the previews.

One of the side-wised winks and nods that I also really enjoyed was having the characters of clink & clunk played by the hosts of NPR's "Car Talk" radio show, the Magliozzi brothers :)

Saw the movie today... Needless to say our 6 & 4 year old sons loved it. They're sleeping with stuffed Lightning and Mater "plush toys" as I type... They had the additional motivation in that they saw Lightning and Mater "live" at the Studios last month both in the Parade and over by the LMA entrance.
Hostile takeover bank, cute.
Also noted that John Ratzenberger of " Cheers" fame appears in yet another Pixar film.
Think Disney may have guessed wrong on one piece of the marketing, though. We were at the Disney Store at the Mall after the movie, and the place was stocked to the gills with Lightning McQueen stuff, yet was sold out of most of the Mater offerings.
DS 4 had to "exhaust" at the very end of the film... Missed the closing credits. Will have to go back!

Saw it today and really liked it. The whole theater was laughing, the kids were enjoying it greatly, and the credits are WELL worth sitting through!!!! Love it when a company can make fun of itself!

Only 62 mil for the opening weekend. Wall Street was looking for at least 70+.
Will be interesting to see what kind of legs Cars has.
Personally, I still prefer the 1991 version with Michael J Fox and Julie Warner. I doubt Cars can compare to Julie walking out of the lake.

Yeah, that's not good. Both Nemo and The Incredibles were over $70 mil. Include adjustments for inflation (Incredibles was out 18 mos ago and I think Nemo was 3 years past) and that's quite a drop.
I really thought it would get into the $80-90 mil range with the huge marketing push.

I took my little man to see it yesterday afternoon- First showing of the day and it was packed in there! Now this is what you can call "fun" going to the movies! Adults, kids just hooting and hollering- laughing and yes...crying...(I could hear everyone sniffling!) round of applause after it was over- I stayed for the end credits (cute!) Is the secret out to stay after the closing credits? No one in the theatre moved out of their seats.
btH...I get it now! :ROTFL:
Loved having Paul Newman in the role of Doc- My dad was a REAL racecar driver so this hit a sentimental string in me- (So yes I was one of the movie go'ers that was sniffling too!)

I haven't been yet but this was a regular weekend. I wonder if the others did better because they came out on a holiday weekend? Of course, they probably didn't; I don't remember...
