OK, are you sensing a thread in my threads?

DW and I have been on a bit of a Depp tear, (though throwing Helena Bonham Carter in the mix has been nice too.) Just psyching ourselves up for the release of POTC2.

Yup, just watched Charlie last night for the first time. Sorry folks, takes me awhile to catch up. We also picked up Five Children and It that starred Freddie Highmore who played Charlie. You can skip that one.

ANYWAY, I really enjoyed the Willie Wonka re-do. Depp is a fascinating actor.

Doug and I just watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the first time a couple of days ago. I know many people will consider this a sacrilegious comment, but I liked it better than the Gene Wilder version.

One of my favorite scenes was the squirrels ("Don't touch that squirrel's nuts!!").

Without checking IMDB, do you know what Johnny Depp's first movie was?

I really liked Depp's version also!

Gene's version came while I lived in Italy - a military brat. We had no English speaking TV in 1972 when I was 12 and the school arranged this film for us as a field trip. It was one of the highlights of my year back then :lovestruc

I don't know if it was his absolute first but I remember one of his earliest film appearances was in Platoon. That' was back in the big-hair 21 Jump Street days. :hahahaha:

As for this film, I didn't care for the remake much. I don't mind CGI effects in film when they are used in a...believable manner. Seeing all of those carbon copy oompa loompas just seemed ridiculous.

One of my favorite Depp movies of recent memory is Finding Neverland. Never thought I'd like it and I delayed watching it for a long time. When I finally got around to it, I couldn't believe what a wonderful little film it was.

DH and I feel the same exact way.
Nobody can ever top Gene Wilder.

Finding Neverland was a phenomenal movie. Depp was wonderful in that film, as was Sizemore. It's a favorite in our house.

Oooh, good one..can't say, though I first 'met' him in Gilbert Grape. (IMDB is fav, go there very often...)

Here's a hint to Johnny Depp's first movie role:

One, two, Freddie's coming for you.
Three, four, better lock your door.
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, better stay up late.
Nine, ten, never sleep again.

Nightmare on Elm Street!

I knew that! LOL

I prefer the original too, it was more fun. I liked Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka but I HATED the oompa loompa songs in the new version. Everytime they would start I would cringe. I do like that they followed the book a little more closely...especially the squirrels!

I noticed in the credits that Roald Dahl was credited with the lyrics for the Oompa Loompa songs. Were the words in the book, or did he write them afterward, intending them to be used someday?

My kids saw the new version first and are bored to tears with the original. I much prefer the original, but did enjoy Depp in this movie.

I have Finding Neverland on my netflix list...now I just have to start watching movies to get down that list again! lol

Not sure about the lyrics Ghost.

I can't say for sure, but I do know that my husband has the original book(s) and mentioned in passing that there was a lot of singing/lyrics in the book. I'll have to sneak a peek into that book later on.

OK TW1, now we agree. While I thought Corpse Bride was total crap, Charlie is absolutely brilliant. And 99% of the reason is because of our boy Johnny Depp. He is fantastic. Watch it again and just keep an eye on how much of the movie focuses on Depp's face. It fills the screen a heck of a lot of the time. I think it will eventually be this generation's Wizard of Oz. I particularly like his accent which betrays his Kentucky roots when he says "you're really weird" just like we do at hiome!!

I loved the corpse bride it was great but I knew going in to expect something not mainstream from Tim Burton. CATCF was a great movie I loved the re make but I also love the original oh so hard to choose.

I liked it much better than the first one. We watched it again on the 4th and my daughter said, he doesn't look like a pirate at all. He's pretty :ROTFL: From the mouth of a 7 year old. Looking forward to pirates tomorrow!
