I am still trying to find out what the "horsey" theme is at SSR. I guess I find the small town atmosphere and the upscale units fit into the theme, but where are the horses? I'd like to see them carry this through a bit more and maybe give everyone a chance for some riding experiences! How about the rest of you?

I asked when we were first shown SSR.

I was told horses are kept and will be kept at FW.

I asked about at least placing the security staff on horses - you know like the police do in some citites.

I was ignored....

they don't even have the horses through the resort. the checkin and restuarant have some horses.

but I didn't notice any in my studio.

Good question! As a lifelong horse lover , I went on a little tour to find horses a few weeks ago!

I assume that the SSR theme was to revolve around the racing industry. I did find a few items in the check in area, gift shop, and Turf Room but many of the horse themes were mixed ie other horses from Disney films (there are few Disney racing references, Mary Poppins comes to mind, but not many others)

FW does a pretty good job of the horse theme, but it's cowboys etc which opens itself up to a much broader range of activities, artwork, exhibits, etc. (Trail rides, pony rides, horse barn, Walt and horses exhibit, farrier, wallpaper in the public washrooms, etc etc etc)

Racing does not lend itself to such a broad range, when kept in the Disney and family friendly context. Having said that, I would still like to see consistent theming - I believe that it is supposed to be Saratoga in the 1920's vs a modern day Saratoga?

I didn't check out the play areas, but how about a carousel ala Mary Poppins? or some sort of racing based games?

Hey, some people already refer to SSR as a "Value" resort. Why not carry that theme further. I support 30' tall replicas of famous Disney horses to be erected next to each building.

"Sir we have you booked in the 'Pegasus' building. Go down the road, make a right at 'Philipe'. You can't miss it."

Maybe Rash has some insight, as he is a horse. I suggest you ask him to investigate. :sherlock:

Wow, I can't imagine anyone thinking of SSR as a ''Value'' resort, but hey to each is own. More room in the hottub.

Well, I certainly don't think SSR is a value resort! I just think they could add a bit more to the whole Saratoga theme. Not sure what it would be, but there are lots of jocky related things I can imagine and things like the drinking fountains etc could be themed.

I don't either, but the outside corridors seem to lead to that comparison for anyone interested in taking a cheap shot at the resort. By no means am I trying to paint a group of people with the same brush, but I can think of a few specific individuals who openly prefer the "hotel-style" accommodations at VWL, BCV or BWV, and use their own tastes as a platform to berate SSR.

I don't think there is any question that a condo-style development like SSR was cheaper to build and maintain than a hotel-style resort like BWV. But using that fact as basis for accusing DVC of cutting corners is crazy. SSR is the only resort with a golf course clubhouse on-property. It has the best spa / workout facilities among the DVC resorts. The view of DTD is perhaps only second-best to the Boardwalk View at BWV. The in-room furnishings are arguably the best in the program.

Each resort has its own strengths and weaknesses. Just because SSR doesn't have covered corridors and room service doesn't make it second-class to BCV (which has no Community Hall, a mediocre workout facility and the stunning "main road view.") ;)

Some folks don't seem to accept the fact that there are actually owners who prefer the condo-style accommodations at OKW and SSR. Why these people are motivated to express their own disinterest in such a manner is beyond me.

the use the top stuff inside it.

I won't be surprised if it was the more expensive DVC resort to built and furnish.

the inside of this resort is very impressive.

everything was the best possible.

I think that there is very subtle theming at SSR. You really have to look for it. It is in the lamp shades when you turn them on (I believe there is a jockey on horseback) and in some of the other interior decorating. It is in the main buildings as you said --- some pictures and other such decorations in the Turf Club, the Community Hall, etc.

I have looked back at some pictures of the time at SSR and what it says to me is quiet sophistication. They hit that nail on the head with the SSR interior designs, the beautiful grounds (which granted are still very much under construction) and the quiet horse theming that is placed throughout the resort.

I am one of those that LOVE the condo styled resorts of OKW and SSR. While I feel like my personality is more of the OKW laid back relaxed style (I am a HUGE Parrothead at heart!), I would have no problems spending every vacation at SSR. We probably won't buy at OKW (even a resale) because I want those extra years, but I will certainly stay there when we can, splitting our time between our two favorite resorts. Both resorts speak of quiet, relaxed enjoyment, so for my tastes, SSR hit the theming perfectly.

lllovell, I think that is a very good description. I just thought the themeing might be a bit TOO subtle.

I understand :) It wouldn't hurt the theming to be more pronounced either I am sure. Maybe they are saving some things for when its completed? (maybe some more outside things I mean).

That would be nice. It just feels to me like they came up with something quickly to retrofit what was already in place with the Disney Institute.

Now that would put SSR at the top of our list of favourites above All Stars and CSR and BWV. As of now it is tied at 3rd with BWV bhind all of the All stars and CSR just behind them.

my guide told me once they lost their permit to allow horses to graze, and walk around from the City of Orlando santitation department. But the original idea was for horses to be walking around a lot (not roam freely, but led around by handlers as like they are off to a race with silkies on) . As a horse lover I would be in hog heaven!

kinda weird if they allow horses at other parts of WDW...

I could see not letting them roam about - but would be nice if they built a stable area and offered riding.... I can't see how that would be different that having horses anywhere else in WDW.
Somewhere - here or on the other boards that will not be named - there was a poster from that area of New York who said the themeing was dead-on, and they were impressed with how well Disney did theme the resort to the Saratoga NY area. I guess if you've never been there - you just wouldn't know....

Personally, I don't mind outside corridors in a place like Florida. In Seattle during rainy season, yes I would mind them. In Vermont or Maine in the winter, yes again.

But, I do understand that some folks have a strong preference for indoor corridors, and I'm glad they're available for those who want them.

That is a great idea!

BTW -- am I remembering correctly...aren't there horses incorporated into the room number plates outside each room? And in the desk lamps?

I love the theme of SSR. Its there but not so in your face.

Funny about the exterior corridors vs the interior. My friend was at BCV this past week as I was at SSR. Well her hallway was just as cold inside as mine was outside! They had cranked up the air for sure. It was cold in there. Plus you do have to walk outside to get to that part of the villa so HA!

Not only that but she was at the end of the worlds longest hallway.

Don't you know.... Rumor has it that the world's longest hallway is at BWV...... (snigger snigger,,,,,,, heheheheh:goodnevil )
