Hi all,
We flew into Orlando on Wed. and found the Magical Express counter without any problems. We were on the bus, and on our way to OKW within minutes of our checking in.
This was our first time in a one bedroom, and first time at OKW. Stunned is the only word I can use for how nice the unit and OKW is.
We had dinner at Olivia's, and noticed a group of 8 guys entering the dining room, that we knew we'd be seeing around the parks for gay days. Our waitress had us try several bread samples that Olivia's is trying out to replace the regular bread. To her delight we picked the bread that Olivia's has been serving all along. She told us the table of men also picked the original bread. I love being in a majority..LOL.
We got groceries at, and found our luggage waiting for us when we got back. We stayed home for the evening, after a quick shopping spree in DTD, unpacking, getting to know our new home, and having drinks on the patio over looking the golf course. I called my Boston friends who were arriving later to stay at Riverside, and they were having a DDP dinner at Planet Hollywood. My other half got online to see which guys had arrived at their hotels at DTD, and SSR.
Thursday, we met up at AK with our Boston friends for a full day there. Everest was awesome, and being an AP at Disneyland, Everest struck me as the Matterhorn on steroids, with a bit of Big Thunder, thrown in. My other half said Everest reminded him of scenes from Disney's "In Search Of The Castaways". We had BFD's ( big fruity drinks ) while we watched the parade, which included many a red shirted guest. (red shirts are what all the gays wear at gay days) I wasn't wearing a red shirt, but I think my BFD gave me away.A very nice CM chatted with us about the things they find inside the various birds at AK in Conservation Station. She showed us the coins, and dental stuff the birds swallow. We got on the last safari at 7:30 and saw almost every animal there, with few exceptions. There are some new ones we haven't seen before, with huge horns in the savannah. The Lion was standing on all fours when we passed by,something I have never seen before. Our buddies had a ADR at Boma, so we went back to OKW for a take out at Goods To Go. We told our buddies to call when they got back to Riverside, get their bathing suits, and booze and to come over to see the DVC unit we had. They were as impressed as we were when they saw it. One has been to WDW 35 times over the last 8 years, so I told him he might save himself some cash if he joined the DVC.
Friday we went to EPCOT for the flower and garden event. Our buddies went to MGM, as they weren't into flowers, so that dispels one stereotype...LOL. EPCOT was crowded and HOT. The butterfly garden was like an oven. The heat really did a number on us by the time we left, but we had a great time anyway. MIckey,Pluto,Chip, and Dale accosted us at while we were having lunch at the rotating restaurant in the Land. We were wearing oour California Adventure Food and Wine Festival ballcaps, so they all started to pretend that they were surfing. I have to say that going through the Mexican pavillion ride, I was amazed that I wasn't insulted by it before. It needs updating filmwise, and isn't the nicest way to present the Mexican people. In Germany there was a kiosk next to the miniature railroad selling similar trains used , and lists of outdoor plants that are used to make your own layouts at home. I'm tempted to do that. Arlo Gunthrie was onstage, and we stopped for a Toddy Cooler and cigarette break. A weary dad from FL was dying for some conversation with his own age group, so we chatted with him for a bit. It was interesting how we live an hour from Disneyland, and his family lives an hour from WDW, and that we all have the same habits around the parks. While we were buying some event stuff, a bad storm blew in, and they started to shut down all the kiosks. We decided to call it a day then. Back in our home, I whipped up some Eggs Benedict for dinner. I have always wanted to make that while on vacation, and once I figured out the microwave, I made a Hollandaise sauce in it that the Chef's de France would have given a blue ribbon to. I know it's heresy, but I did it anyway. And I served the eggs with tater tots and ketchup. That night we could here music, dance music. We called our buddies over at Riverside, and they said it was the big dance party for Gay Days over at Typhoon Lagoon. Gloria Gaynor was there singing her oldies, and promoting her new cd. She is remembered for most for " I Will Survive", but being the old disco queen I used to be, I remember her for the early 70's stuff, like "Never Can Say Goodbye",etc, long before Donna Summer dethroned her.
Saturday was the official Gay Days date for MK. The park was filled with red shirts. We got right into lunch without ADR's at Liberty, and had a great waitress. the other half was getting our camera ready to ask her to take our picture, and she thought he was taking one of her tummy. " You don't want a pic of my gut, not with the 2 scars I got from the Ceasarians, my bikini days are over." By the time we finished lunch, the entire place was full of red shirts, with a line of red shirts waiting to get in. We were scheduled to meet up with the bears at Country Bear Jamboree at 1:00. Bears in gay lingo are men a bit on the husky side with beards, usually. I am one, as is my partner, and our friends from Boston. We all met up to see a crowd of about 150 bears lining up to get in. As with last year, there were more than the regular number of CM's at the attraction. We hear it is because partly for crowd control, and the fact that this is the most fun guest watching for this attraction. When the girls in the singalong sing "the guys that turn me on ,turn me down" is not to be missed. Everyone sings, claps and hoots and hollers, and laughs in all the right places to what must have been the show's original intention. I watched the 6 CM's laughing with and at us all. I'm sure they got a kick out of it.
We did just about every attraction in MK, gave knowing smiles to all of our red shirted pals. Except for that poor family man that had a red shirt on that I smiled at before I saw the wife and kids behind him...ooops!
I chatted with a lesbian couple on the bus back to OKW, as their 2 daughters were trying on their new princess tiaras, and magic wands. I have 2 friends that adopted 5 children back in the Boston area, and they have never been to WDW. I need to write them a nasty letter, and describe to them how much fun their family is missing.
We stayed in that night, our last night. Music could be heard again on the wind, but this time from the gay days dance party at MGM.
In the morning we were all packed, had the place reasonably cleaned up, and headed over to get our boarding passes for our flight home. The crowd at the check in was curled around the lobby and out the door. This was at 11:00 AM !
We always schedule our departure for early evening to sqeeze in as much resort time as possible. We had lunch at Olivia's. Our waitress asked where we were from, and we answered, California. When we told her the town, she had no clue, so I said, next to Malibu. "what kind of car do you drive?" I am currently restoring a 57 Chevy I have had for 15 years, and said so, but she is too young to know of them, so it was a lost cause...LOL. We packed our flight clothes in our carry-ons, and wore our bathing suits by the main pool and lounged for a few hours. The guys we saw at dinner the first night had the same idea, and were nearby. Families on either side of us were discussing the same topic, "points", and how many more they want. My other half brought it up too, how many we need to stay in a one bedroom every time we stay. We showered and changed into our flight gear for the trip home. Magical Express was right on time, and we stopped at SSR to pick up guests. It has many more units now than last year being built, and we saw a stand alone building that looked like it may be a new lobby.
We had a great time, and look forward to Oct at VWL this year. Hope I haven't bored ya all.

Next time I go, I would love to see the CBJ with all of ya'll!! That would be too fun! I always get so disappointed in the crowds at CBJ, when I was little, everyone would sing and laugh and clap....

Those eggs you cooked up sounded awesome! I agree with you on OKW, it is a awesome place, and the 1BR's! :woohoo:

Sounds like ya'll had a blast :)

That was a great report! Glad you and your partner had a good time. It sounds like it was a lot of fun for everyone there.

I'm glad to hear the lions aren't really audio-animatronics! They always seem to be sleeping when we go so I was beginning to wonder ;)

It sounds like you had a fantastic time and I am so glad you took the time to report! I love reading reports as it gives me a chance to float back to the world for a bit and escape!

And next time I go to WDW will probably be in October, when PJ is done nursing, so it will be a BFD or 3 for me!!! (BFD - I LOVE THAT!!! :beatinghe )

Thanks for sharing Gaston! Do you have any picture of yourself and yor other half you would share with us? Post them over in the picture thread in the Community Hall :) or here! I would love some faces to go with your Trip report!

What a great report my wife loves BFD's but they have to be alcohol free as she has celiacs and can't have anything made from wheat or gluten etc.

I haven't been to CBJ in years, but that line (turn me on turn me down) has always cracked me up! Thanks for reminding me about a fun memory!

Is red just an arbitrary color chosen for this event or does it have some significance? (Enquiring minds and all that)

Altho I own at BWV, if I ever decided to treat myself to a one bedroom...it would have to be at OKW where they are really something quite special!

Thanks everyone for the great replies,
For questions asked...
We had room number 1914. It is a ground floor unit facing the bbq area behind the pool. Off to the left is water and fountain, part of the golf course. Being on the ground level was great, as the palms and such grow right next to all the windows, that adds to the tropical feel.
As for pics of us, sure, they are on the other half's laptop, and once he transfers them to a disc, I'll post some of the good ones. ( meaning if I am in the picture, I don't look like crap)
The red shirts are a tradition, signaling who's gay. Kinda like a red flag as it were.
I think it goes back to the 60's and early 70's when the only way you could get into a gay bar was by wearing a red sweater that the doorman could see thru the peep hole at the front door. Different colors, and attire were scheduled for different days much like a secret code. I have heard that Disney will supply a T-shirt to anyone wearing red ,who complains about being mistaken as gay at guest relations.
Food reports,
Crabcakes, prime rib, steak salad, Reuben sandwich, and coffee at Olivia's were great. Coffee at Goods To Go, horrid. Tuna sandwich, turkey sandwich, fries, onion rings at Goods To Go excellent.
I forget the name of the rotating restaurant at the Land, but the food was all great. I had never tried fried catfish, and loved it. Coffee was good, as was the dessert. Very sweet, but as my other half says "Nothing could ever be too sweet".
At Liberty Tavern in MK we both had the Pilgrim Feast, turkey dinner, and was very good, coffee was too.
Coffee in Fantasyland near Philharmagic was thrown out after one sip.
We like to think we are gourmets, gourmonds, but mostly gluttons. We' ve been to all the great places at Disney, and love it all, but this trip we ate without having the one special meal, or seeking out the favorite restaurants. I carefully zapped a hollandaise sauce one day, and carelessly zapped a frozen pizza the next...but.. I made sure I made EXCELLENT coffee every morning.

Frank are we related?? ;)

Half of the time spent on our trips is searching out good coffee at the World. Which sometimes can be a chore with Nescafe :yuck: at every turn!! So agree about the crabcakes and PrimeRib, etc. at Olivia's. What a great place to eat, yum!

Intresting what you said about the red shirts, I have always wondered the orgin too. Thanks for sharing!

btw, BFD's are a new saying in our house :tilt:

I think we need to get Frank to start supplying some BFD in the Nothing Thread closet ;)

That's very interesting about the red shirts. I never really gave it much thought before. I just kind of thought that red was picked b/c it stands out. That's great that it has more of a "historical" (ok, it wasn't that long ago) reason to it and it actually stand for somthing.

Looking forward to the pics :)

Great trip report! I am sorry you did not come into Disney's Days of Christmas at DTD to visit me last weekend and pick up a red set of Mickey ears!!!!!!!!!!! My bad for not reminding you. I know several CMs who attend the unofficial gay days every year and say it's a blast. Glad you had a great trip!

Rozzie, have you ever had vacuum brewed coffee? It was all the rage in the 1930's to 50's. They are the double bubble looking coffee pots. I have one ,and it makes excellent coffee. They use them at Vic and Al's on the table at the Grand Floridian. I also have a Toddy cold brew thingy, found it online, and is very big in the south from what I hear. I first learned of it at the gay rodeo in Washington DC. It makes a coffee concentrate, so you can zap a fresh cup anytime, great coffee.
Stimpy, I was a bartender for almost 30 years, so I know how to make a great BFD, some come on over.
Doombuggy, We walked past your shop and almost went in. It was late, near closing time, so we went into the shop across the way and picked up cool stuff we can't get at Disneyland.

Yes Gaston!! I had the vaccum coffee at V&A 2 years ago, and just about died! It to this day is the best cup of coffee my lips have ever encountered. I am taking mom this Nov, and the night of her 65th we will be back there. I keep talking about the coffee, and she is getting frustrated, "what about the food?" :veryconfu LOL, I have been searching for one of those. I think I found one on ebay once, but the price about blew me away!!

Can't wait till' my next BFD at the Suitcase!! :)

Rozzie, Starbucks sells a vacuum brewer, haven't tried it. Otherwise try getting a Sunbeam Coffeemaster on ebay, but make sure the rubber seal is still soft, otherwise it won't brew. These are from the 40's and 50's so not all of them for sale are useable.

Great report! OKW, BFDs, fun and food - what's not to love, eh?

BTW - had to chuckle about the hetero guy in the red shirt. Friend of mine's DH was in grad school and was late for class so he's in a big hurry across campus (which is in the middle of a town). Just as he hits some congestion on the quad near the main road, a hand reaches out and welcomes him into the flow of people moving down that road. He said they were laughing, smiling, and going in the direction he needed to go, so what the hey! It sure beat standing in the throng of parade-watchers. It was like a big party moving down the street, and he got plucked to be part of it - much like you might feel if chosen to move along with a Disney parade! So we walked and chatted and waved at the sidewalk folks like he was Mr. America until he reached his destination, then waved goodbye to his walking-party buddies, and ducked off towards class. Wasn't til he read the student news paper the next day that he realized he had been in a Gay Pride parade... plucked from the crowd to participate because he had been wearing a a red shirt and hence they assumed he was gay. His reaction was funny - kind of a let-down, like, "So THAT'S why they chose me! Because of my shirt color? And here I thought it was because they liked me better than all those other people!"

Recalling your comment about the red shirts and folks who don't know this significance and show up at Disney unwittingly wearing red..... I have to wonder, knowing there are unscrupulous folks that would stoop to all sorts of things just to get so much as a used paper coaster out of The House of Mouse - how many people would wear a red shirt on gay days now just so they could complain to Disney and get the freebie shirt? I can see that posted now on some Budget Tips board! :sosad:

Hey you coffee connoisseurs: what is the concensus on coffee made in a Bodum? I have one of these presses that I got when I lived in Australia. Thought I had lost it when I moved back home 15 yrs ago - but lo and behold, found it in my pantry the other day! Guess I could give it a shot and see how it rates compared to my sameoldsameold Mr. Drip system. My kingdom for the coffee machine my SIL got for xmas - a really great cappuccino machine that does the milk and all that jazz. Yum.

Maybe we should start a thread on the Wine/Dine board - "Best/Worst Coffee in The World!" Or has that been done already? :scratchch

Sounds like a blast - and yes - you need to bring those BFD's over to the Nothing Thread sometime! Can't wait to see a picture!
I have a Bodum coffee press and love it. I've never had the vacuum coffee - so I can't compare it - but compared to a drip machine - the press is 100% better. Really easy to use too!

I haven't tried to post pics yet, but at the bottom of my page it says I cannot post attachments. Does this refer to photos?
As for the coffee press, I haven't tried one yet. I know, I need to soon. After BFD's my passion is coffee, and have a cold brew coffeemaker. It makes a concentrate, that you keep in the fridge, and you zap it by the cup. Fantastic!!!
Over the weekend I made these, try at home
Vanilla vodka, OJ, triple sec, and vanilla ice cream , in the blender. Creamsicles.
From my bartending days, we used to make fudgicles too, Kahlua, choc ice cream, godiva choc liqueur( or creme de cacao, dark) and a splash of vanilla vodka, and Hersheys syrup in the blender.
Now why don't my red shirts fit anymore??

Gaston,

I use photobucket.com to host my pics, and when I compose a message here, I
paste the link using the picture icon on the toolbar to insert the URL. It simply shows up here as a picture. Clear as bad coffee, eh?

Oh, and to make those shirts a little less tight, why don't you join our Mouseowners Marathon team? You don't have to run the full marathon. I'm only doing the 1/2 marathon. You get to run through Disney World! It's another excuse to visit The World! :bouncingp

Thanks, I'll try that. As for running thru WDW , it reminds me of a vhs movie we got as a gift from friends. It is "40 Pounds Of Trouble" with Tony Curtis. It was the only movie made inside Disneyland at the time. There is a long chase scene thru the park circa 1960's. Many of the attractions are no longer there, and the trees were so short back then...LOL.

Ah, maybe the Disney coffee is their own version of a vacuum brewed coffee? Maybe they put it through the bag of a vacuum cleaner. :coffee2:
